Tour de France
It’s summer time and so the Tour de France is back,
Faces unrecognised beneath the safety cap.
Sunglasses wraparound to keep out dust and flies,
No high speed racer wants that getting in his eyes.
Their legs are shaved, their eyes are clean, their bikes shine swell,
Mechanics do their 24 - 7 job well.
They’re brightly kitted out, well fed, well organised,
Both young and old, or slow, by some you’d be surprised!
It’s good to see some of these pros having a go,
But there are some in that pack we don’t want to know.
One racer waits amid the fastest breakaway:
He’s always there, but keeps a low profile each day,
But if there’s an attack, he’s almost sure to win,
He comes fast from behind, puts others in the bin.
You’ve guessed his household name? “Mark Cavendish!” you say.
Green jersey winner, and world champion today
2011, which was his best year so far.
Olympics very soon mean he should stay a star.
Mistaken, pal, not him, another very quick
Is catching up right now to force all in the ditch.
But who is he? I get bad vibes. Is he unkind?
He’s friends with lots of them I think you’re sure to find.
“Lance Armstrong?” must be him, won the Tour 7 times.
Someone who saw him once told me just how he climbs,
“I saw him ride up an Alp like it wasn’t there,
Always so far out front that no one could compare”
You fail again. That’s not his name. Keep trying mate.
He has been banned before but comebacks always makes.
Some do have lunch with him, but have to take great care
Because they might not see if there is a food scare.
His racing pals are glad to see him in the pack
But they don’t get too close in case there is a lack
Of care on his part and they all will fast lose face.
Only one “high speed crash” means favourites lose the race!
You still can’t guess his name? He’s top of every poll,
You sure you didn’t know? Team mate Glenn Buterol.
