When 2 teens runaway from home and meet by coincidence all they want is to start a new life away from their abusive/ critical parents. They fall in love while running. Katherine gets taken in the night to an insane isylum and Cristopher has to find out where they took Kat so he can get her back.

My long, brown hair blew into my face and I took one step out the door without looking back. My future was unclear and for me that is unusual. All I knew was I had to get outta there before they take me to that obscure place where they’ll be paid to hurt me.

Let me explain. Ever since I was a baby, I could see the future of anyone who was around me. Whenever I see someone, there future plays in my mind like a movie on the mega-screen at a movie theater. Because of that, I don’t go out much. It’s not like I need to though. I mean I’m 14 and homeschooled, so why would I. All the other girls think I’m messed up, even my parents think little of me. They even tried to have me put in the special ed. group when I was in school. I know they don’t really love me. They only love Sarah, my sister. They only want a normal daughter. It makes me wonder why they don’t send me to the orphanage or something.

I started running into the black of the night, not sure where I was going. I had a backpack full of food, water, some matches, some cotton, blankets, and a small pillow.

Once I got about a mile into the forest, I stopped running for a couple minutes, but continued on after that because they could have already found out that I ran away. While I was running, I thought about what caused me to flee.

“I don’t know what’s wrong with her. I don’t understand what we did to deserve a child so worthless. Why were we cursed with such a burden of a child so mental?” mom had said to dad. They thought I was in bed fast asleep, not around the corner listening to their every word like a hushed predator stalking its prey.

Suddenly my silence was interrupted by footsteps running in my direction. I ran over to a thick bush and became motionless. A boy around 14 came into view. He had about 2 inches of curly dark brown hair. His eyes were a breath taking shade of light blue and his clothes were slightly torn. His outfit was casual yet looked like it was what he wore for the past month. For once someone’s future wasn’t clear to me. He looked in my direction. He must have heard me draw my breath.

“Is someone there?” he said quietly. I decided to answer because he of his surreal power. I stood up slowly.

“Yes.” I said cautiously. His eyes glanced over me, like a police officer about to check the criminal for a weapon. He was trying to hide a grin.

“Who are you? Why are you out here?” he said as if he was in a hurry.

“My name is Katherine, but everyone calls me Kat. And why are you out here?”

“My names Christopher. I’ll tell you, if you tell me.”

“If you promise to keep it a secret and not freak out.”

“Okay.” I took a gulp as I prepared to answer.

“I can see the future of anyone that I look at and my parents don’t love me. They were going to put me in an insane asylum, even though I’m not insane. I knew I had to get away, so I did.” I gave him a minute to absorb what I was saying.

“That’s terrible. Are you okay?” he said sympathetically.

“I will be as soon as I get far away from here. Now what’s your story?”

“My parents abused me and I couldn’t take it anymore. I just left tonight.”

“Is that why your clothes are torn?”

“Ya…” he said sadly. I dropped the subject because I knew it was getting too painful for him.

“You can run with me if you want to. I wouldn’t mind. I actually would probably like it because then I wouldn’t be alone.”

“I would love that.” His eyes glistened with excitement. We sat and smiled at each other for a minute then I realized we needed to go.

“We really should go. We gotta run at least another 4 miles then we can set up camp and get a couple hours of sleep.”

“Let’s go then.” We smiled for another split second then took off in a full out sprint.

After about 30 minutes we stopped running and set up camp. He put both our blankets and small pillows on the ground next to each other, while I made a small fire with some of the cotton I brought with me. He was smart and brought his watch so it can wake us up if we sleep too long. It was already 1:30 A.M. and I had left at midnight. He set the alarm for 4:45 A.M. and we laid down. I fell asleep the second my head hit the pillow.

The alarm went off breaking my peaceful silence and we both woke up. I moved the ashes around so there was no evidence of a fire. While I did this, Christopher packed up all the camping gear. We decided to walk instead of run because we were too far away that they would check here. As we walked, we asked each other random questions, like “what’s your favorite color?”

After about an hour, we started talking about where we were going to go.

“Maybe we could go to Mexico it’s not that far, plus I speak a little Spanish. We could get jobs and start a life there.” Christopher exclaimed.

“That’s almost 200 miles though; it would take us like months to get there.”

“We could do it, together.” He smiled his heartbreaking smile. He took my hand and held it tightly like he would never let it go. I smiled back at him.

“You have such a beautiful smile.” He said in a flirty way.

“Thanks.” I looked down and blushed.

“For what? Telling you the truth?” he smiled at me.

“Well that and you weren’t afraid of me. You didn’t automatically think I was crazy and for that I’m grateful. When I’m with you I forget all the crappy stuff in my life, and I can’t help but be happy.”

“I feel the same way about you.” We smiled at each other.

The sun started to go down, so we stopped walking and set up camp. Once the fire was lit and the blankets were spread out on the ground, we laid down next to each other. Christopher put his arm around me and we stared at the sunset. We both fell asleep in this position. When I woke up, I had my head was on Christopher’s chest and he was still asleep. I got up and grabbed a granola bar for each of us from my back pack. I silently ate mine and rearranged all that was left from the fire.

After about 20 minutes Christopher woke up. He yawned tiredly.

“Morning.” I said with a cute smile on my face.

“Morning. How long have you been awake?” he smiled back.

“Not long.” I tossed the other granola bar over to him, and he caught it faster than someone who just woke up should have, and then ate it hastily. Maybe he’s just that hungry. We didn’t eat anything yesterday because we needed to make it last for as long as possible.

“Should we start packing up the stuff?” Christopher asked.

“Ya probably. Do you have any clue where we are?” I queried.

“Well, we started in Austin, Texas, and we walked at least 25 miles yesterday and ran 3 the night before, so we’re probably close to San Marcos, Texas. I’ll bet we can make it to Piedras Negas, Mexico in about 5 or 6 days.” he smiled.

“So our plan is to go to Mexico, live on the streets for a while until we get enough money to buy a house, and then we can just go on living our lives once we do?” I asked a little nervous.

“The best part is we don’t have to leave each other after that. I’ve been meaning to talk to you about something.” Christopher said suddenly nervous.

“What is it?”

“I know I haven’t known you for that long but I really like you. You’re the only person I’ve ever been able to be myself around and thinking of life without you makes me want to die. I really want to take you out on a date or something, but I don’t know if we can do that just yet. Plus we have no money either. So, what do you say? Do you wanna go out with me?” Christopher said in the most irresistible way. I would have said yes either way.

“How could I say no?” I smiled, wrapped my arms around his neck and hugged him. We stayed standing like that until we heard a noise. We both turned towards the sound.

There was a man and it was clear he was looking for someone or something. We both froze in place. He came closer to us but I was sure he couldn’t see us. We slowly and as quietly as possible climbed up a tree with all our stuff. Again we became still. The man still searching went past our tree, but we stayed there for another 15 minutes just in case. Slowly, we climbed out of the tree, which caused animals of all sizes to scurry off.

“What do you think he was looking for?” I whispered to Christopher.

“I don’t know.” We both looked at each other worriedly.

“We should stay here for a little bit longer so we don’t accidentally run into him again.”

“I agree. If he was looking for us, it would be safer unless he comes back this way.” We went over to the base of a huge tree and sat down next to each other. He put his arm around me, as if he were protecting me from danger. I snuggled closer to him, because I was scared of what might happen. My worst fear was something happening to him or us being separated.

After a couple of hours, we decided it would be safe enough to leave, so we got up and started hiking. The sun was probably at its highest point in the sky, but we wouldn’t have known because enormous thunder clouds blocked all the sunlight.

“It’s going to rain soon. We need to find shelter, but how?” Christopher pondered the possibilities.

“Maybe we could… how about…” I let my mind wander through all the options, but there was no choice that didn’t have a negative to it.

“I guess we have to go into town and hide in a turned off sewage pipe or something.” Christopher said giving up.

“Ya I guess so. Oh, hey I’ve been thinking.” I smiled cutely.

“Should I be scared?” he joked. I giggled.

“Can I call you something shorter then Christopher? Maybe Chris or something.”

“You can call me whatever you want. I don’t care as long as we’re together.”

I smiled at him and crooned “Awe. I love you.” We stopped walking and turned to each other. His eyes were looking directly into mine.

He smiled widely and breathed “I love you too.” He cautiously leaned his head down so I could reach. Our lips met and stayed connected for a few seconds. Finally I pulled away because we had been slacking too much that day and we needed to get going. We smiled brightly at each other. He put his arm around me and we kept walking. I leaned my head on his shoulder while we walked.

“What time is it?” I asked.

“Around 9:30. We should probably stop for the night. At least the storm passed so we don’t have to risk going into town.”

“I don’t think we would have done that anyways were only about15 miles out of town. They probably have people looking for us at least 35 miles out.”

“Good point. It would have been too much of a risk. If anything were to happen to you I would blame myself.” He hugged me closer to his body. I kissed him in response and we stopped to set up camp for the night. I was so tired by this point that I was unconscious within 1 minute of laying down I passed out snuggling close to Chris as possible.

Around 1:30 I woke up with large, manly arms locking e in a cradle. They seemed too big to be Christopher’s so I peeked at the man through tiny cracks in my eyelids. The man was quite large, with a long, curly beard. His hair was similar to his beard. His eyes were the darkest shade of brown that I had ever seen.

Christopher! Where is he?! I looked in the opposite direction that we were walking in, to see Christopher knocked out on the ground.

“Christopher!” I hollered. “Christopher please wake up! Help me!” I tried my hardest to get out of the man’s grasp but failed. I saw Chris’s eyes open and he got up groggily like he had no clue what just happened.

“Christopher!” I bellowed again.

“Kat!” he screamed back. He started sprinting as fast as he could to try and catch up with us but we were too far ahead. We were in the nearest town and I was being shoved into the back of a black van that said “New Braunfels Insane Asylum” in big white letters. There was a caged in trunk, which was where I was stored.

I didn’t care about where they were taking me. All that I could think about was Christopher. Had they hurt him? Was he going to come looking for me? Will he find me if he does come looking for me? I couldn’t help but think the worst thing possible was going to happen.
