Hotshot detective Katie Mckinley was seriously stressed, she had a pile of case-files on her desk ,her mom was moaning at her to visit for grandmas birthday weekend , her girlfriend was bitching about the amount of time Katie spent at the office and wanted her to take the weekend off to visit her uncles cabin, in the middle of no where, to rekindle there spark, and to top it all off a new case had landed on her desk, a beautiful young girl had been found dead in her apartment, no other signs of violence or evidence of a break-in according to the first on the scene.
Katie thought of her moms disappointed lecture when she rang to tell her she wouldn’t be able to make grandmas birthday, the `why cant you meet a nice professional gentleman to take care of you?’ speech, even after all these years of bringing home girlfriends , of being the youngest detective , not to mention the only woman, in the san Francisco police department, katies mom was still hoping she would settle down with a nice guy and take a non dangerous and respectable job in somewhere like , maybe a bakery. Katie snorted with laughter at the thought, she was a lot of things, but a baking housewife was not one them, katies temperament was hotter than any bakery oven.
Katie then thought of sandy, her live in girlfriend of two years, beautiful sandy, with the big green eyes, the long dark hair, curvy figure that had people gawping at her, the killer smile, and the fight they would have tonight when Katie told her she would have to work the weekend, nothing like a murder to make your girlfriend wish you were dead. Sandy had already threatened to leave, saying katie always put her job before her, and that surely she wasn’t the only detective in the whole of san Francisco.
Katie had tried to spend more time with sandy but always seemed to be interrupted by Michael, her partner, phoning or beeping her to come to the office.
Michael Thompson, her detective partner of three years, chubby, scruffy, unshaven , doughnut loving. Puppy dog eyed buddy. He had  hit on her when they had first met and when Katie explained she was in love with a woman he had become like her best friend.
Katie picked up the file on her desk, 26 year old sarah Addison, worked in the coffee shop on union street, hadn’t turned up for work at 9.00am Monday, on Tuesday morning her landlord had opened the door for her worried boyfriend and he found her dead in bed surrounded by rose petals, and a single red rose next to her on the pillow, she had a single stab wound to the heart. First reports where that there were no fingerprints at the scene apart from those of sarah and her boyfriend and no forced entry, nothing in the apartment seemed to be stolen or moved, the boyfriend had returned that morning from a business trip in Denver and had the ticket to prove it.
Katie sighed and picked up the phone, not sure who to call first, sandy or her mom, wondering who was going to make her feel worse.

He stood under the streetlamp, in the cool night drizzle, watching the young woman walk up the few steps to her apartment building, wearing her yoga gear and fumbling in her handbag. He strode across the street from the sidewalk and she finally found her keys and opened the door. He stepped quickly behind her andflashed her his smile as he reached past her to hold open the door.
She had done this the past two nights, leaving her apartment at seven and spending an hour at the gym at her yoga class before climbing the apartment stairs at eight –thirty, always fumbling for her keys in her huge handbag, it struck him how pretty and innocent she looked, but also slutty as she looked him up and down before giving him that inviting smile.
He followed her up the first flight of stairs, he continued to follow her across the first floor hall, she began to give him nervous glances over her shoulder snd he began to feel more confident and powerful, she reached for her door and he began to reach into his inside pocket, she glanced nervously at him as he withdrew his hand, then smiled at him as she opened the door. He smiled his boyish handsome smile as he reached for her hand, then slid the sharp, smooth, metal deep into her heart as he walked her into the apartment and caught her in his arms as she fell lifeless into them, the smile was still caught on her lips as the light went out of her eyes.

Katie had visited the crime scene at sarahs apartment where the techs had been hard at work, however they were unable to find any signs of struggle or forced entry, no other fingerprints apart from sarahs or her boyfriends found anywhere, there was no mess, no nothing, except the single red rose on the pillow, the rose petals and the single blood mark in the centre of the bed. Apart from the blood stain it looked like a romantic night had been expected. Was sarah cheating ? did a be-grudged ex do this? A jilted lover? Katie looked at the file, sarah was a pretty young woman, she looked slighty familiar, the beat cops were interviewing co-workers, friends and family, all were so far in agreement that sarah was a lovely, happy young woman, no drugs, rarely drank, no rows or arguments known of, Katie would visit the coffee shop where sarah worked and speak again to her co-workers, maybe there had been n altercation with a customer.
It was dark by the time Katie started to make her way home, she stopped off and brought a bottle of wine and thai takeout, sandys favourite, in an effort to appease her.
When Katie rolled the car to a stop in the driveway the house was dark, sandy had clearly gone to bed in a mood .Sighing Katie got out of the car with the now to be wasted thai and wine and let herself into the darkened house, she placed the food on the table and noticed an envelope on the table with her name on it. Shakily she sat at the table, not wanting to open the envelope, not wanting to read what was said in the envelope.
Sandy had finally got fed up of all the nights alone, the cancelled dates, the wasted dinners she cooked, she accused Katie again of putting her job before her, she had gone away for a while and would be back to collect her belongings.
Katie sat at the kitchen table crying and re-reading the letter over and over until she fell asleep at the table exhausted.
The next morning Katie dragged herself into the office, ignoring all the glances she got from wearing her shades to cover her red, tied, swollen, on the verge of crying again eyes.
She had just sat at her desk and picked up a file lying on her desk when Michael walked in carrying a box of doughnuts and setting down a coffee on katies desk,
`morning sunshine, late night?’
Thinking her to be hungover or tired Michael pulled off katies shades and stopped in his tracks at the sight of her eyes, as Katie snatched back the glasses and put them back on Michael sat on the edge of her desk, concern flooding his puppy dogs
` whats the matter kiddo?’
before she knew it Katie was embraced in a bear hug, crying, telling Michael all about her break-up letter,
After handing her a hankerchief to dry her eyes on Michael said
`well I never liked her, you can do so much better than her’
They caught each others eyes and started to grin, they both knew that wasn’t true, Michael had liked sandy, and with her looks and amazing personality they knew Katie had been lucky to have sandy as a girlfriend.
Michael picked up a chocolate covered doughnut and shoved it at Katie
` look on the bright side, at least you wont have to watch your weight’
Katie ate it in three bites.
Katie picked up the new file that had been on her desk and gasped, another girl had been killed last night, with the same MO as the case she was already working on, a pretty young woman had been knifed once in the heart and found in her bed with a single red rose on the pillow next to her and rose petals on the bed, crime techs were on the scene now.
Katie passed the file to Michael and said
` same MO as the other vic, do you think we got us a serial killer here?’
Michael read through the file
`seems like it’s the same perp, same MO, both young, pretty girls.
` I want to go see the crime scene, check out for fingerprints, hair, fibre, anything, crime scene techs couldn’t find anything at the other girls apartment ‘ replied Katie.
` can you do a background check on the latest vic? See if thers a connection between the two women, or if theres any crazy exes, arguments, anything, after ive been to the apartment I want to go to the first vics place of work, talk to her collegues, see if anything comes up.
`No prob’ from Michael `ill do the checks then meet you at the coffee shop later, maybe canvas the area, talk to people sitting outside, people go there for lunch, maybe someone noticed something, and hey, if your not feeling upto it i can cover for you if you need to take a break, or go talk to sandy’
`thanks, but I need to keep myself occupied, and sandy wont answer her phone, ive tried I don’t know how many times, ive left messages, texts, and she hasn’t called me back.’
Michael walked over to her and took he face in his hand,
`you still got me’
Katie brushed off his hands , stood up and reached for her jacket
`thanks dude’
, she gave him a playful punch on the shoulder and she walked around him,.
Katie drove up to the apartment of last nights murder , an apartment block with a entrance where you needed a code to enter, the crime scene van was outside and uniform were going door to door, officer Donnelly was guarding the front entrance and greeted Katie as she walked up the steps.
`well if it isn’t san franciscos finest lady officer, how are ya sweetheart?’
Katie gave frank Donnelly a big hug, he had been on the force for years, and was a friend of her dads, who had been a beat cop til the day he got shot by a drug dealing drug taking pimp her dad had been trying to arrest.
`hows it going frank? How is everyone?’
`Everyones great, brad just had another baby, moira was just saying the other day you need to come over for meatloaf, its been too long.’
`I know, im sorry. Soon, I promise, whats happening inside?’
`It’s a strange one, no forced entry, either at the main entrance, or the apartment door, no mess, no signs of struggle inside, nothing looks out of place, and the techs cant seem to find anything yet, there going over it inch by inch, my guess, she knew the killer’
`you guys going door to door?’
`Yeah, spoke to the neighbours, said she was a kinda quite girl, out at work all day, she worked in the local bank, no boyfriend they knew off, no-one heard any noise or raised voices last night.’
`Ok frank, let me know when you find anything out.’

Katie walked into the apartment and apart from the dead body in the middle of the bed there looked to be no signs of violence whatsoever, nothing was out of place, nothing upended or broken.
Katie walked over to the body and apart from the single stab wound to the heart there was no other obvious signs of violence, no marks on the face or around the neck, she picked up the girls hand and saw no scratches, marks or broken nails.
Mark the tech guy walked up to Katie
`Hey, we’ve found no evidence of anything at all yet, no fingerprints, fibres, hair, nothing, ive taken samples of her finger nails in case she scratched him and taken vaginal swabs to check for intercourse or rape, if its ok with you the bodys ready to go to the morgue, maybe they can find something there.’
`She’s ok to go, keep checking this apartment though, there must be something he left behind of himself.’
Katie’s phone rang, Michael was calling to tell her he’d finished the background check, Jodie Hodges, 27 year old bank clerk, no priors, no parking tickets, no out of the ordinary card transactions, no problems at work. He had set up a meeting for tomorrow with Jodie’s manager, Katie arranged to meet Michael at the coffee shop where Sarah had worked to talk to her colleagues. Katie parked a few blocks from the coffee shop and decided to walk, she went to this shop often and was usually in such a rush she didn’t know who served her, she pulled out sarahs photo from the file again.
Katie did vaguely remember her, she was sure she had served her and Michael a week ago when they had decided to grab a sandwich at the coffee shop and get away from the office for an hour, she had seemed nice, and a little flirty with Katie, smiling and winking at her, Michael had been a little jealous as he had though the woman attractive , as they’d left the woman had said
`See you tomorrow for you coffee’
and winked again at Katie.
Katie thought she really should pay more attention in coffee shops and bars, she couldn’t ever remember seeing her there before that day. Katie sighed and put the photo back into the file.
Michael was walking round the small park outside the shop showing people sarahs photo, a few people recognised her , some has exchanged pleasantries with her but no-one knew much else.
Katie and Michael walked into the shop and were hit with the smell of fresh coffee, muffins and toasting sandwiches, Katie asked to speak with the manager and they were taken into the office where the manger was working, Katie introduced herself and Michael and asked the woman, a mousy looking woman called Penelope, about sarahs work, what kind of person she was, and had there been any recent disagreements with customers .
Penelope looked close to tears as she answered
`sarah was a pleasure to work with, she was always smiling and friendly with everyone, always polite and a hard worker, she took on extra shifts to send money to her sick mother, she hadn’t fought with anyone, colleagues or customers’
`what about boyfriends?’ asked Michael
`sarah liked girls, although she never brought anyone in here or spoke of anyone in particular, she sometimes flirted with the regulars but it was all just fun and no-one ever took any kind of offence’
Katie blushed as she recalled how sarah had flirted with her
`Any of these women maybe it the wrong way? Or had a boyfriend who took it the wrong way? ‘ questioned Michael.
`No , there was nothing to it, just a simple, your hair looks nice, or, your dress is lovely on you, with a little wink was all , she did it to me, it was just how sarah was’
At this Penelope began to dab at her eyes so Katie and Michael excused themselves.
They asked the same questions of sarahs colleagues and got the same answers.
It was beginning to look like sarahs murderer was not someone she knew.

That night he sat in his darkened apartment looking at her photo, waiting for the day she would be his, he smiled as he ran his knife slowly down her face, how surprised she would be that he could be so clever, soon, very soon, his plan would be complete.

Katie lay awake all night, thinking about the lack of evidence of the girls murders, the lack of motive for either of them, then her thoughts turned to sandy, she missed her, she missed the feel of her lying next to her in bed, the softness of her skin, the smell of her hair, the calmness of her breath when she slept.
Katie began to cry as she thought about the girlfriend she had lost. She was so much like her father, stubborn, hardworking, determined, proud , she knew that was the reason she and her mom didn’t get on, it pained her mom to be reminded of the man she loved and lost. Katie could understand her pain, and realised sandy felt as her mom did all these years, neglected, and worried every night her police officer wouldn’t be coming home.
Katie picked up the phone and dialled sandys number, it was still turned off, had been since she left, she had left messages and texts but heard nothing back. She had also phoned sandys mom but she was adamant she hadn’t heard from sandy, not that Katie believed her, she was the last person she would tell if she knew the whereabouts of sandy.
Katie got out of bed and picked up the case files again, she needed to distract her thoughts from sandy and maybe she would find something new she hadn’t spotted before, she hoped so, these cases baffled her.
Katie woke at five in the morning having fell asleep on top of the files, after hours of poring over them, finding nothing new, her eyes had grown heavy and weary and she had eventually crashed out. Today she would go to the bank where Jodie hodges had worked , ask the same questions as they had yesterday and would this time hopefully find some answers. Two hours later Katie pulled up at the precinct car park, she would try sandy again soon, Katie knew she was mad at her but sandy knew Katie would be worried about her , they hadn’t spoken since sandy had left the apartment they had shared, and just wanted to know she was ok and not sleeping rough in her car somewhere.
Janet was manning reception today, she was the closest thing to a female friend Katie had , they had enjoyed casual flirting and bickering with each other and shared lunch and the odd beer when time allowed.
`Hey beautiful, looking good!’ janet shouted as Katie neared the reception
`Or not so, everything ok hun?’
Katie briefly filled janet in on the last few days events , before Katie had even finished janet had walked around the desk and grabbed Katie in a fierce hug, as Katie fought the urge to either push janet away or burst into tears she heard Michaels voice behind her
`Is this going to get any more exciting ladies, can I watch?’
He had a huge grin on his face and Katie was annoyed at him, other officers had begun to arrive and he started chuckling with them and a few of them gave him playful punches on the arm.
Katie was suddenly furious , she didn’t need this, especially from Michael, she already knew some of the other officers called her detective dykey, and were jealous of how well she was doing moving through the ranks, she had thought Michael was better than that, thought he was on her side.
She felt Janet grab her arm and whisper ` Don’t do it, don’t give any of them the satisfaction of seeing it get to you’ She then gently steered Katie towards the lifts that would take her to her office.
Katie sat down at her desk just as the phone rang, she picked it up with a curt `Hello’
It was one of the officers from downstairs informing her of another murder, one that sounded exactly like the other two, Katie took down the details and slammed down the phone with a `SHIT! ‘
Michael came towards her with a sheepish look on his face
`Michael im really not in the mood for your shit today, I thought you were my friend , how could you do that to me?’
Katie’s face was hot with anger and she was clenching her fists trying not to punch him right on that fleshy nose of his.
Michael held out a large cup of coffee, `Cappuccino with a hint of vanilla, your favourite , a peace offering, im sorry Katie I really am, you know im not all that popular around here , I shouldn’t have used you to fit in’
Michael looked close to tears and Katie began to relax a little, it was true, he wasn’t a popular guy on the force, there were rumours he was incompetent, lazy, too unfit to chase down bad guys, and when he was trying to be charming he came across as sleazy. But Katie had seen the other side to him, the kind, caring, sensitive guy, which was why she kept him as her partner, she also knew what it was like to not fit in , to be talked about by your colleagues.
Katie sighed, reached for the coffee Michael still held out
`We got another one, sounds like the same m.o , over at pacific heights’
`Another already? This guys moving fast’
`Too fast, something’s happenedto make him escalate, the criminal psychologists are here this afternoon to give a profile, maybe they can give us something to go on’
Katie and Michael sat in silence much of the drive over to the crime scene, Michael giving little looks in katies direction and after seeing her stony gaze decided it best not to talk.
As they pulled upto the pacific heights apartment there was chaos outside, officers had cordoned off the outside and there was a screaming, crying woman trying to force her way inside .
As Katie got out the car frank Donnelly approached them looking grim
`Katie, hey, looks like another one, single stab wound to the heart, no signs of a struggle, young woman appears to be in her early twenties, that’s her partner over there, just came back from a trip to new york’
Katie glanced at the grief stricken young woman who had now collapsed into an officers arms.
`Get the paramedics to check her over, ill need to talk to her later’
`No problem, hope you guys catch this fella soon, this things all over the news , women are going to be scared to leave there homes.’
`I hope we catch him soon too frank’
Katie had a feeling they would not be catching him anytime soon.
As they entered the apartment the techs were going over the place with a fine toothcomb, Michael stooped to look at the door jamb and frame.
`Doesn’t appear to be forced?’ he questioned the tech
`Not at all, not even a hard push by the looks of it’
Michael and Katie entered the room and quickly surveyed it. Once again nothing looked to be out of place, the room was neat and tidy with just a jacket flung on the back of a sofa.
Techs were busy looking for fibres and dusting for fingerprints but all admitted to finding nothing so far.
They walked into the bedroom where more activity was going on , pictures were been taken , techs treading every inch of the room and the coroner standing over the body of the beautiful dead woman lying on the bed with a red stain over her heart.
Katie gasped, she knew this girl, she had interned in the office for a few months , filing there reports and sending and receiving faxes for them. She had dreams of becoming a detective and had shadowed Katie for a few weeks, had envied her, had said she wanted to be just like her. Katie staggered back and Michael caught her elbow
`You ok detective?’ asked the coroner.
`I know her’ she whispered `She interned with us’
she turned to look at Michael
`Is that the kid who thought you were her hero?’
`Yeah’ she looked at the coroner
`Same guy?’
`Appears to be yes, single stab wound to the heart, no signs of struggle, no other obvious injuries’
Katie had gone very pale and the room was focused on her. She glanced at each of them
`Find something’
The techs nodded and again began there search.
As they left the room frank Donnelly approached them
`Ive spoken to the girlfriend , she was in too much of a state to say much, shes had to be sedated, I did find out that the girls name is Joanne, the girlfriend was on a work trip all week, came back a few hours ago, she spoke to Joanne last night around nine, said she was going to meet a friend, didn’t get a name ‘
`I knew her frank, she used to intern for us, she left a few weeks ago, wanted to become a detective, was going to apply’
`Did you know any of her friends?’
Katie shook her head no. Katie had given Joanne her card, told her to call anytime if she wanted help or advice, Joanne would have called her if she was worried about anyone, or felt in trouble.
Michael placed his hand on katies shoulder
`Maybe you should go home, you don’t look so good, I can take care of things here’
`No, I need to do something to catch this asshole’
`Youre not thinking clear, its too close and you look tired, you slept at all?’
In truth she hadn’t slept much since sandy had left her
`Yeah a little, im fine michael’
`You spoke to sandy? You know where she is?’
`No, shes still not answering my calls and I don’t know where she could be’
`Maybe shes with a girlfriend?’
`I called them all, they say they don’t know where she is’
`Im sure she will be in contact soon, why don’t you go home, get a little sleep, you need to have a functioning brain if were going to find this guy’
He was right, she was so tired she doubted she would see a clue if it smacked her in the face, she would go home and get a few hours sleep then come back and search the apartment herself, she had to find out who she was meeting last night.
`Get phone records , find a diary, calendar, anything that will give us a clue, call me if you find anything’
Michael stepped forward and gave her a quick hug
`Everythings going to be fine, we will find this guy sooner than we think’
Katie thought she caught an odd glint in Michaels eyes and his smile seemed strange, she really must be tired, a few hours sleep and she would be fine. The media started to arrive as Katie drove off, the links between the three deaths would be headline news by teatime, more pressure for them to catch this guy than before.
Katies head began to pound and she would have to take painkillers if she was ever going to sleep.

He watched the news in his darkened apartment , photos of his three girls placed in the screen in front of him, he watched as the footage from that morning played out, the chaos as police kept the barriers, refused to answer questions , saying there would be a press conference later that evening.
He began to chuckle as he thought of what they would say, how stupid they would seem that they had no idea who he was and how clever he would seem because they couldn’t catch him. He picked up another photo and thought about how this was all going to end, he tipped his head back and began to laugh hysterically, he had waited for this day for so long, would savour it , would forever know how truly amazing he was and how she would finally also know it, how she would beg him to end it. He stopped laughing and his eyes began to glow with anger and hatred.
The time for the game to end would be soon, and the best match of all was about to begin.
Katie lay in bed and tried to sleep but had too many thoughts rushing round her head, who was this serial killer? How was it possible he left no clues? Or was she just missing them? And where was sandy? It had been three days since she had left and Katie had heard nothing, she found it hard to believe that sandy cared so little about her now that she wouldn’t let her know she was ok. She again picked up the phone and dialled sandys number, this time it rang and after a few rings her girlfriends tired voice came on the line. Katie then didn’t know what to say, she had run this moment through her head so many times, what she would say, how she would ask sandy to come back, and all she could now manage was a croaky ``Hi’
They talked long into the night, about there relationship, how it needed to change, they both put there points across and Katie began to realise how lonely it had been for sandy, and sandy began to understand how hard Katie had to work to be who she was.
They agreed to meet up to talk about how they fix things, sandy had been staying at her uncles fishing cabin in the woods, Katie said she would drive over the next day, and was again struck by how much she had missed sandy, how excited she was to see her.
After getting off the phone to sandy Katie drifted off into a deep, exhausted sleep, from which she didn’t wake until late the next morning when her phone ringing brought her startling awake. It was Michael
`You best come into the office Katie, we found something’
There was a pause when Katie asked what had been found
`You just need to come in,’ another pause before he added
`An officer will bring you in , there’s one waiting outside , just to drive you in, I know you’re tired.’
Katie couldn’t quite believe what she was hearing
`What the hell is going on mike?’
Just then there was a knock on her door and she heard Michael say sorry as he hung up.
She opened the door to two patrol officers with there hands on the butts of there unclipped guns.
`Detective, please come with us’
The young officer flushed and couldn’t meet Katie’s eyes and he said
`Ill need you to hand me your gun’
Katie looked stunned and stood there shocked, until anger and confusion took over
`What the hell do you want my gun for, what’s going on and why the hell do I need you two to drive me to the god damn station!!!’
`Please detective, just come with us.’
Katie was fuming , she marched back inside to fetch her gun, and was shocked and annoyed to see both officers draw there guns and eye her warily
She stood there amazed, wondering what on earth was going on
She pointed to her service revolver lying on the kitchen table, not wanting the officers to become trigger happy.
She then followed the officers to the patrol car , shaking with anger, and wondering whose ass she was going to have to kick when she got to the station.
As Katie entered the station reception she could feel a hundred pairs of eyes staring at her. As she passed the reception desk her friend Janet refused to look at Katie , and she swore she could see tears in the woman’s eyes.
The officers escorting her gently pushed her forward , towards the lifts that would take her to the floor where she worked, as she stepped out of the lift the whole office became silent and every pair of eyes was upon her . She stopped and frowned, and then saw Michael begin to walk towards her.
`Mike, what’s going on? Why is everyone staring at me? And why are these two escorting me, did something happen? Is it sandy?’
Michael took her arm and nodded at her two escortees
`Cmon on’ he whispered, as he led her across the room, everybody’s eyes following them as they went.
Michael opened the door to one of the interview rooms and ushered Katie in.
Already seated was their chief lieutenant, will patterson, sitting there with a very grave expression.
`Hey chief , what are you doing here?’
`Sit down detective’
Katie stood stock still
`Is it sandy? Has something happened?’
`Have you heard from her?’ asked Michael
`Yeah, yesterday, her phone was finally back on, we talked, whats happened? Please tell me, is she ok?’
Katie took hold of the back of the chair in front of her for support.
`This isn’t about sandy’ this from her chief `Sit down, now’
Katie sat down reluctantly , confusion setting in even more.
Will slid an evidence bag across the table to Katie.
`This yours?’ he asked
The bag contained an earring identical to the one she had lost a few weeks ago, ones Michael had brought for her birthday.
`It looks like mine, I lost one a week or so ago, where did you get it?’
Will looked sad and gazed at her like he didn’t know her.
`It was at the first crime scene, under the pillow, the techs thought it was the victims until the pathologist noted she didn’t have her ears pierced.’
Katie looked at him in disbelief
`You think this mine? How would it be at the crime scene?’
Will looked at her without saying a word, letting his eyes say what Katie thought she would never have heard from him. Realisation began to sink in , she looked from will to Michael, who was staring at her like she was someone else.
Katie paled and began to feel sick
`You think I had something to do with this?’
Will slid another evidence bag across the table containing a strand of hair the same colour as katies.
`DNA tests prove its yours katie’
Katie sat there staring
`My hair could have fallen out at the scene’
`It was found at the second scene, on the victims head so it was hard to spot, it was picked up before you even got to the scene, the techs thought it was the victims as it’s a similar colour but double checked it to be sure, and found it matched yours, we checked it after we also found your earring’
Katie looked to Michael,
`Tell me you don’t believe this mike’ she whispered
`Where’s sandy Katie?’ he asked
`What? You know where she is, you know what happened ‘
`I know what you’ve told me’
He slid a folder onto the table which Katie opened, it contained photos of all the victims , attached to each photo was a post it note with Michaels writing on.
The first one read ,- `earring found at scene , flirted with at coffee shop, earring found in bed, affair?’
The second one had a picture of the strand of hair now on view in front of Katie , the note on that one read
`Found on victims head among her own hair , close contact needed’
The third picture was Joanne, katies eyes began to fill with tears at the sight of her would be protégé, now dead at the hands of a killer, a killer her colleagues suspected was her, on that photo Michael had written - `infatuation’
Katie now began to seethe, anger turning her face red and her eyes glared at Michael and will, she rose from the table and slammed her fist down hard
`How dare you think I was involved in this, how dare you!!’
Somehow Michael had strode like lighting across the room and pinned Katie to the table she was leaning on, drawing her hands behind her to cuff her.
Katie struggled against him but he was strong, stronger than she ever thought he was.
Will stood and looked sadly down at her
`ill have more questions for you later’
He nodded at Michael and she was heaved from the table and walked towards the door.
`Where are you taking me?’
`To a cell’
Michael sounded different now, like someone she didn’t know
`Let me go mike, he jokes over, its really not funny now’
`No-ones laughing katie’
Michael kept on leading her towards the cells, past all the stares and open mouths.
When Michael had not so gently pushed her into a cold, bare cell and noisily locked the door he stood at the cell door shaking his head
`You’ve thrown it all away, you weren’t as good as you thought you were, you should have known you couldn’t have gotten away with it’
`What are you talking about mike?! This is stupid!’
He refused to look at her or answer her and walked away leaving Katie bewildered, and for only the second time in her life, scared.

He looked down at the throbbing city beneath him with a smile on his face, rocking slightly on his heels, things were going exactly as his planned , his game would soon be finished and the new one would begin. He picked up a photograph of detective Katie mckinley , at the pretty face, the intelligent eyes, the stance of a woman who knows she has it all, he crumpled the photo fiercely in his fist and let it fall between his feet, he looked again upon the city , the city that would soon be his.
Katie paced the cell for the next few hours, running things through her head, wondering how her hair could have gotten at a crime scene , how an earring identical to hers could be at another crime scene, why people would think she had anything to do with these murders. Was she being set-up? And by who? And why? . There were plenty of people Katie had annoyed over the years , but surely not enough to want to frame her for murder?.
Her thoughts then turned to sandy, she was meant to meet her today, sandy would think she hadn’t turned up because of work again, had put her last yet again.
Katie looked around the cell she was stuck in, in a way sandy would be right, Katie was stuck in work, she gave a slightly hysterical laugh at trying to explain her way out of this, not that sandy would give her even a second to try and make her excuses.
She sighed and sat on the bunk with her head in her hands.
`A sharp rap on the cell bars made Katie glance sharply up, Michael was rapping his coffee mug against the bars, she looked at him, seething inside, sensing something something different inside him but not sure what it was , also wondering how he could believe she would do this, when this was all over she was requesting a new partner.
He seemed to be sizing her up, like he was waiting for her to crack and confess.
`Can you call sandy’ she asked in a neutral tone , not trusting herself to have a proper conversation with him right now.
`Where is she Katie? I’ve tried her phone but there’s no answer, we gonna find her dead like the others?’
Katie shot up from the bunk and flew across the room to him and screamed
`Fuck you mike, when I get out of here we’re done, now phone her and tell her to get here!’
Michaels face changed and became stony, he stood up straighter ,

`Give me the address and ill go get her’
`So you can tell her what you so clearly believe ive done?! No chance!’
`We need to know she’s ok, give me the address and we’ll confirm she’s ok and bring her in’
Katie reluctantly gave him the address and hoped sandy knew her better than Michael obviously did.
Michael took the address down and smiled at Katie
`I wish things had been different katie’
He then winked and walked away, stopping to talk to another detective, who shook his hand and clapped him on the back, which Katie found strange, Michael strode away with the demeanour of a man who enjoyed the attention he was getting from his partners, his best friends, dilemma.
The detective who had shook Michaels hand was luc Wilson, a man who hated Katie because she was female, a better detective than him, a better shooter than him, and who had refused his advances and requests for dates.
He came towards her cell with a file similar to ones she had used numerous times before to conduct interviews.
He spoke to the officer near the cell
`Cuff her and bring her to the interview room’
He glanced at her with disdain, like she was a criminal like all the others held in cells like these, not a colleague he had worked with for years.
The officer who unlocked the cell with handcuffs at the ready was the same young officer who had come to her house to bring her in , he again blushed and averted his eyes from hers as he placed her hands behind her back to cuff her.
`There’s no need for this crap do I really look like a bloody murderer?’
He whispered quietly so no-one else would hear
`For what its worth, no’
She silently let him lead her out the cell , wishing everyone else had the same faith in her as he did.

He drove his car at a steady 50mph, whistling to the song playing on the radio, he had his equipment ready in the trunk, his heart began to beat quicker thinking about what would soon happen , he licked his lips as he thought how delicious it would feel, and this one would have kate mckinleys name all over it.
Luc Wilson sat across from her, the young patrol officer standing discreetly in the corner
`So detective, are you ready to talk?’
`Yeah, I want to talk, why are you holding me here with this crap? Is this some kind of a joke? We should be out there finding the real killer, another girl could be dying right now.’
`Is there more than three victims?’
`For gods sake! Listen to me, I am not a killer, im a police detective!’
`Exactly’ said luc `It explains the lack of evidence at all the crime scenes, you know enough to remove all traces of yourself, but you slipped up didn’t you, why did you do it? Did they reject your advances? Did you mistake joannes enthusiasm for the job for something else? Did you use her trust in you to subdue her?’
Katie gritted her teeth and spat out
`Its not me you asshole, you have an earring and a piece of hair, you need to let me go so I can solve this case before somebody else gets hurt.’
`Is that a threat? Do you have another woman in mind for you to murder cold-blooded?’
Katie glared at him across the table , unsurprised he had never progressed, the guy had no gut instinct, no knack to look any further than the end of his hooked nose.
`Is your hairpiece affecting your brain? Maybe you should remove it so you can think clearly’
This elicited a snigger from the young officer, it was common knowledge luc wore a hairpiece, a bad one, he glowed red now as he glared furiously at Katie.
His voice rose to a shout as he demanded of her –
`Tell me why you did it’
Katie again rose from her chair and shouted her innocence. The patrolman made no move to subdue her and luc leaned back in his chair like he was scared of her.
At that moment the door opened and will walked in
`Sit down Katie ‘
She sat down with a thud, a headache beginning to pound at her brain.

Michael began his journey to the address Katie had given him for where she said sandy was staying, he wondered what he would find when he got there, he had never really liked sandy, although he had tried to for katies sake, now he really hoped that he would find her.

He reached his destination by dusk, he parked his car out of view two miles from the cabin, obscuring the car by parking as close as possible to the large overhanging trees as he could. He got out of the car with a smile and stretched , he thought he would take his time with this one, make it look more like the crime of passion he intended it to be. He hummed and whistled as he strolled round to the trunk and began to take out his equipment , the black gloves, the rope , the jiffy bag with the few strands of hair he had cleverly managed to obtain, and his favourite piece , the knife he had sharpened so finely just this morning, that now glinted in the moonlight.
He put the gloves on , loosely fastened the rope round his waist and zipped up his jacket, he then tucked the knife under his sleeve out of view and began to walk towards the cabin with the smoke pluming from the chimney and the porch light invitingly beckoning him on.

In the interview room Katie sat with her head whirring, not able to think straight, will sat down across from her and looked into her eyes.
`Talk me through this Katie, tell me how the evidence got a these scenes, how the links with these women are just circumstance, make me believe you didn’t do this’
She looked up at him and saw in his eyes the hope, he wanted to believe her.
She straightened up in her chair and tried to clear her head, to think how all this could have happened, she needed to take herself out of the equation and think like the detective she was.
`I need coffee, a pen and pad, and I want to look at the case files again’
Luc sneered and began to decline but will put a hand on his arm to quieten him, looking at Katie he smiled
`There’s my girl back , get the detective what she asked for luc’
Luc looked outraged
`Sir, she’s a suspect in this case’
He was quickly silenced with a glare from both Katie and will.
`No-ones leaving this room luc, nothing can get contaminated or changed, she’ll either do your job for you , or she’ll prove us all wrong.’
Luc looked at her and Katie knew he was silently hoping she would do his job for him and prove herself guilty.
The young patrol officer brought Katie coffee, the case files and all the evidence that had been gathered at the crime scenes , not that there was much of it.
She looked first at the crime scene photos, she knew she had missed nothing the times she had looked at them before but again studied them hard.
The victims were stabbed from a close distance, they had opened the door to there attacker so they had to know him, they had to if they allowed him to be that close , close enough to deliver the fatal stab. It had to be someone who knew enough to not leave any evidence, none of these women had any connection whatsoever so it was unlikely they all knew the killer, so it had to be someone who people would trust, maybe someone in authority . Something began to whir in the back of katies head, things started to fit together. All of a sudden things began to rush to the front of her brain, flashes of things, and conversations came flooding to her.
Katie suddenly felt sick and visibly paled, both luc and will frowned at her
`What is it?’
`I need a phone, now!!’

He reached the front door and stood on the porch , the excitement growing in his stomach, he would be sorry when it was over, he had enjoyed the game , but he was looking forward to the new beginning , and katies end was what he was most looking forward to.

Katie was frantic now, she needed to phone to warn sandy, luc and will wanted an explanation, now, but Katie didn’t know where to start, had no proof , couldn’t quite believe it herself, all she wanted right now was to make sure sandy was ok, and was going to stay that way.
`What if someone wanted to set me up? Its going to sound crazy but hear me out, but first I need you to make sure sandy is ok, I need you to send someone to fetch her, quickly, we need to get local p.d there now.’
`Is she in danger, where is she?’ this from luc, looking sceptical.
`Yes, she’s in danger, she’s in a cabin in the woods, and the person I think is responsible is on his way there now, so get me a goddamn phone now and get on the phone to local p.d !’
Will nodded at the patrol officer, Katie didn’t even know his name, and he left the room to arrange the phones.
`Luc, give me your phone’
Luc looked surprised but handed over his mobile, Katie looked at will
`Thank you’
She would always be grateful for his belief in her.

He stepped up to the porch and knocked on the heavy wooden front door, after a few seconds he saw the curtain at the window twitch and then a few moments later heard the door being unlocked and then it eventually opened. Sandy stood at the threshold with a smile on her face , just as she was about to step forward for a hug her phone began to ring
`Sorry’ she gave an apologetic grin and looked down to fish her phone from her pocket, as she did so she saw the glint in his hand and dropped the phone as she realised what he held in his hand, he stepped forward and she moved just out of reach of the grab he made for her and began to run.

`She’s not answering it’
Katie hit the redial and got a dead tone, the fear In her stomach deepened as the thought that he was already there could be a reality
`We have to go, now’

Sandy ran through the house screaming while he calmly followed in her footsteps, she reached the back door of the cabin and pulled at the handle frantically before realising it was locked , she turned to flee again but he was right behind her, she tried to run past him but he grabbed her round the throat and threw her against the wall so hard she crumpled, dazed, to the floor.
`Why?’ she whispered
`Why?’ he snarled `After what that bitch did she deserves everything she gets ‘
`Who? You’re not making sense’
`Oh really’ he grabbed her by the hair and forced her to her feet, he trailed the knife slowly down her throat, liking the look of fear in her eyes.
`Katie is the reason for this, she’s the reason you’re going to die, and im going to enjoy watching her whole like disappear before her’
He started to laugh and threw sandy into a chair , he removed the rope from around his waist , and when sandy started to struggle he slapped her hard across the face before starting to tie her to the chair.

Katie started to pace the room, trying the locked door to get out
`Please , ill explain everything on the way, but we have to go now!’
Will walked across the room to her
`You’ll be handcuffed all the way, and if this is all a decoy I wont hesitate to shoot you’
`Fine, handcuff me and lets go’

Luc drove and will sat in the back seat with a handcuffed Katie

`I know this sounds crazy and you’re unlikely to believe me , and I hate to think its true, but I think Michael has something to do with this, I don’t know why but he’s setting me up, he’s the only one who knows where sandy is, he wanted me to give him the address, he’s been acting so weird lately, my earring has been missing for two weeks, he brought them for me, they were on my dresser last time he came over and they weren’t there the next time I looked, I never thought about it before, guessed maybe sandy had moved them, but that’s the only way they could have ended up at the crime scene, a hairbrush is also missing from my desk, he’s my partner, he’s the only one who knows my life, who would know my connection with these women, not that there really is one, he’s just made it seem that way, mikes not the same as a few days ago, the mike I know would never believe I would be capable of doing this, he would defend me to the end’
`But why would he do it?’
`I don’t know’ Katie whispered `I just know its him, gut instinct’

He paced in front of sandy , fingering the tip of the knife and angrily shaking his head
`You don’t know what she’s like do you, she likes to keep me where she wants me, like her little lap dog, she thinks she’s better than me, thinks she’s so good , that she got to where she is on her own, if it wasn’t for me she’d be nowhere, ive helped her on all her cases, ive done all the running around and she’s taken all the credit , made everyone think im stupid and incompetent , and then she has the audacity to turn me down, she doesn’t know what she’s missing with me, she could have had it all, but she turned to you! And now im going to take it all away’
`You’re crazy ‘ whispered sandy, shivering from fear
He turned to look at her and the glint in his eye scared her even more
`I haven’t even begun yet’
He dragged his blade slowly across her cheek, drawing a thin line of blood, sandy screamed and he began to laugh loudly and deeply.
He grabbed a chair from across the room and sat astride it in front of her. He cocked his head to one side and smiled at her, he pointed the knife at her chest and asked,
`Would you like me to start with your left or right breast ?’
She stared at him in horror as she realised what he would do
`I’ll enjoy reliving this moment for Katie, when she’s all tucked up in her prison bed’
He suddenly stood and threw the chair across the room, he had been here for over an hour now, teasing her , the blood was running down her face onto her chest from the cut on her face and her lip was swollen from where he had slapped her. He would have to make the wounds appear a few days old to avoid ruining his plan, he had acid in the car, that would do the trick.
He smiled as he walked towards her, thankful for the fact the cabin was so far tucked into the woods he wouldn’t have to gag her, he wanted to hear her scream, loudly.
He used his knife to slit open sandys shirt then slid the knife slowly between her breasts and as sandy began to sob and scream he slit open her bra and traced the knife across her breast.
He pulled back his arm to plunge the knife into her and as she screamed so loudly it sounded like an explosion he suddenly felt a pain in his chest and found his arm heavy to move, he staggered back slightly and tried to again raise his arm when he heard another explosion and felt a sharper pain in his shoulder blade , he was aware of a dull shouting behind him and movement , he felt the knife drop from his hand and as he turned round he saw Katie , holding a gun in front of her, he looked surprised and wondered how she had got here,
He looked down at himself and saw the redness spreading across his chest , as he crashed to the floor everything came back into focus , he saw Katie moving towards him, and as luc began to untie a sobbing sandy from the chair Katie bent over him and asked
`why mike?’
`Because you took away everything I wanted and I wanted to do the same to you’
`Took away what mike? You were my friend’
`You took away my chance to be a hero every time, you took all the credit for yourself and you acted like I didn’t exist, we could have been happy, you didn’t need her’
His breath had started to come in short rasping sighs and blood began to bubble on his mouth
`I almost had you’ he croaked , and then his eyes fluttered and then remained open as his whole body went still.
Katie stood and went over to sandy who ran sobbing into her arms.
The next day Katie and luc went to Michaels apartment and found the wall with all the pictures of Katie , some with her face cut out, some burnt, some scratched..
They also found the newspaper clippings of Katie detailing the crimes she had solved , the copies of her police file showing her rise up the ranks and the pictures of the girls he had killed and tried to blame Katie for, they also found vials of assorted drugs and prescription medication,.
Luc had began to bag items as evidence and glanced over at Katie
`You really are a damn good cop’
He carried on bagging as if he had never said anything and Katie knew better than to acknowledge it.
As Katie lay on the sofa later that night, wondering if she ever trust anyone again, wondering how she hadn’t seen what Michael was , sandy walked into the room carrying a bridal magazine
`You ready babe?’
Katie also wondered how she had ever nearly let this woman go. She smiled
`Yeah im ready’
