This is my first short story I have wrote. It is actually about a Dungeons and Dragons group I am the DM for and this is the story of how they met. Grammar is not my strong point but I am working on it. Please feel free to let me know your thoughts, perhaps who your favorite character is or what you did or did not like about the story. Thanks for giving it a read.

Shila crept through the hallway of the giant mansion. Never has she been so quiet. Her heart beat raced, feeling as though it could burst through her chest at any second. She has done this many times before, but never in a place this big and of this importance. She was in the house of Chancellor Khiry al-Damid of Reim, a rich aristocrat who for all who matter runs the port city of Reim.

Getting into the mansion was a lot easier than it should have been. The chancellor should hire better guards Shila thinks as she moves through the house. Her long white hair is pulled back in a tight bun to prevent it from obscuring her vision. The house is very dark and everyone is in bed, as they should be since it is almost the darkest hour. The darkness does not bother Shila for her Drow heritage allows her to see perfectly fine in the dark. She scans the hallways and rooms looking for things of value. Not just anything however, she only wants the most expensive items. She is not here to kill anyone, only to make a quick bit of coin. It's not easy to find honest work when you are a Drow.

She presses her ear to a nearby door to make sure all is quiet. She quietly turns the knob and enters with a quick glance behind her to make sure no one is coming. Quickly scanning the room for anything of worth. JACKPOT!! The ignorant fool has everything on display here. All manner of gems and other priceless pieces are on display. Shila methodically starts filling her pack. She picks up a large diamond and holds it up, marveling at the beauty of it.

From down the hall Shila hears a host of footsteps thundering up the stairs followed by a bunch of shouting. “Blasted, how did they hear me? The place must be magically warded” Shila mutters as she shoves the diamond in her pack. She moves quickly for the door and runs out into the hallway. She can make out the first of the guards coming up the stairs. She sprints down the hallway and turns towards the right. It's a dead end. “Damn it all” Shila spits. The guards behind her are getting louder and she is running out of time. There are two doors and she grabs the knob on the left, locked. She frantically turns and tries the other door. The knob turns and she sprints through the door and slams it shut behind her, locking it as she does.

“Who in the nine hells are you?” A voice demands from behind Shila. She slowly turns around to see a middle age man standing in his pajamas. He has messy black hair and fierce Amber eyes. He has a very round belly, no doubt from living the rich lifestyle. Even his Pajamas must have cost a fortune, made from lynx fur. “You must be Chancellor Khiry I presume?” Shila asks. “You're damned right I am, now what are you doing in my house?”  The Chancellor responds. “QUICKLY MEN TO THE CHANCELLOR’S ROOM.” the sound comes from just down the hall. Shila gives a quick glance back at the door. “I'm terribly sorry but I don't seem to have much time to chat, I must be going" Shila says with a sly smile on her face. Shila can tell his body is tense and he is nervous. He keeps glancing off to his side. She follows his eyes to a greatsword lying next to a table. “Now let's not get too hasty here” Shila says as she loosens her swords from their scabbards.

It was three on one but he wasn't worried. He has been in worse situations than being surrounded by three goblins. Godric trained for situations like this every day. Besides he had his God backing him and Abkel would never let him down. He fell into a rhythm waiting for them to make the first move. His shield raised his sword coiled and ready to strike. In an instant the goblin on the left leaped towards Godric his makeshift spear held high and ready to strike. Faster than the goblin thought possible the shield came up and knocked the spear aside. Next the sword flashed forward and the goblin's head went tumbling to the side. The goblin in front gave a whoop and came running forward as did the one on the right. Godric spun around to parry the thrust from a crude sword. The third goblin swung his sword at Godric's side, thinking he had a sure kill. The shield slammed down on the weapon, snapping it in half but not before taking a glancing blow on his side. Out came his foot, slamming into the face of the goblin and sending it sprawling to the muk.

The sword flashed across again knocking the goblins sword out wide. He had his opening. Taking a step forward to close the gap, he brought his sword down in an arc and split the goblin from hip to shoulder. Only one remained now. Godric stalked over to him. The goblin whined and begged in his native language. “Your reign of terror ends here filth” Godric announces as he thrusts the sword through the creature's heart.

“Well done Godric, well done indeed” says a familiar voice. Godric turns to see Commander Elbeor approaching. “I thought I was going to have to step in for a moment there” the commander says with a laugh. With a laugh himself Godric says “Not a chance old man, no way a few goblins were going to bring me down.” “Hahaha doesn't mean I can't still kick your ass” replies Elbeor who stands a few inches shorter than the stout Godric. “Did we get the last of them?” Godric asks. “The scouts say this was the last of them, though they were acting very strange. I've been a Knight of Holy Judgement for a long time and never have I seen goblins act this way” Elbeor turns to survey the battlefield. “Something just doesn't feel right; I hope Abkel provides the answer soon”.

Just then a horse comes thundering up to the two Paladins. “Commander, commander!!! I bring dire news!!” A young Knight astride his mount looks near panic. “Well out with it lad! We don't have all day” Bellows Elbeor. “It was a ruse; this force was just a distraction. They knew we were tracking them, so they took a small force off in a different direction. They hid their tracks extremely well, too well for just goblins. Their main force now heads for Reim.” The young Knight explains nearly out of breath. “By the gods, how could we not have seen this? Just how big is this force? We have nearly every Knight in our order here and we barely reach 800 troops”. Elbeor says as he turns and sends a worried glance at Godric. “Our scouts say their force is close to five thousand strong, and to make it worse is there are Orcs with them” replies the Knight. “Damn, Damn it all. Godric gather the troops we make haste for Reim”

The two of them stepped off the ship onto the docks of Reim. The smell of brine and fish was strong here as it was in most harbors. “Ahh let us find a tavern and some women to plow” The large Otieno says to his companion, a handsome human standing a few inches shorter than the Otieno. “Is that all you think about Diero? Fucking and drinking? Well I like the way you think because I need a stiff drink” replies Darvin Greycastle. Diero lets out a hearty laugh and slaps his companion on the back, causing him to stumble slightly forward. “Diero just loves drinks and plow, what could be better? Except perhaps punching people.”

The two of them strolling through the streets, there aren't a lot of people out at this hour, mainly drunkards and thieves. Everyone keeps a wide berth of these two. The massive Otieno and constant sneer of the pirate is more than enough to stay the hand of any thieves. “You know Diero we should really meet with your Bastard father, he will be expecting us.” Darvin says as he scans the streets for possible threats. “Diero know Diero know! He can wait. We just get here. First we drink! Then we plow! Then we meet with Draeveon”. Darvin lets out an audible sigh “I assume the Brass Dagger is where we are headed?”  “Diero love the Brass Dagger! Good drinks and many drunkards to punch” the Otieno says full of mirth.

They pull the door open to the Brass Dagger. A single story building, with a single salvaged stone wall. The inside is just a large room with tables scattered around. The place is full of smoke and loud talking. The tavern is full of all sorts of patrons, from Dwarves and Humans to even a few Half-Orc. The companions make their way to the barkeep, an older Halfling with a long scar running down his face. “What'll it be boys?” The halfling who goes by the name Hughes asks. “Two pints of ale please and keep them coming.”  Darvin says as he slaps down two pieces of gold.

Darvin takes the ale and turns to find a seat. He notices Diero has already found two tavern wenches he has taken a liking too. “Sure didn't take the bastard long” he mutters to himself. He sits down and starts drinking. Before he can even get two gulps down he hears “Dem be me wenches you scum. You best be walkin now.” A half-orc easily two heads taller than Diero is poking him in the chest with a big meaty finger. “Diero think they are his wenches now. So you should be walking away you stinky piece of shit” as Diero retorts right back. Darvin goes to stand up but before he can even make a move, the half-orc goes flying across the room and smashes into the wall. “Diero told ye they were his wenches”.

Finally the two companions are able to sit and enjoy a few rounds of drinks. However the respite is short lived. The door to Brass Dagger bangs open. In rushes two humans, both looking terrified and out of breath as though they have been running for a while. “The city… the city is under attack by goblins and orcs! Thousands of them”

Shila could see the red glow from the window behind the chancellor. What in the world was going on out there she wondered. The guards are pounding on the door just behind her. “Chancellor!! Orcs and goblins are raiding the city! They are burning everything” The guards yell, followed by more pounding. The city is being invaded? What are they talking about? The chancellor must have sensed Shila’s distraction as he dives for his sword. In a blur of motion Shila’s sword are out. “Damn it Chancellor, that was not a smart move.” Shila heads for the window but she quickly has to dive to the side as a swing from the greatsword comes at her head. She dives over the couch and kicks it towards the Chancellor before falling into a defensive position. *BOOM BOOM BOOM* the guards must be trying to break down the door; I have to get out of here.

The chancellor makes another swing at her, which she quickly steps aside. She doesn’t want to hurt him, she’s not a killer. An overhand swing causes her to roll backwards to avoid being split in two. She swipes one of her swords low and it is knocked aside, just as she expected. She takes a step forward behind his sword and smashes the hilt of her sword right into his nose. It shatters under the impact and blood splatters her armor. Now's my chance to get out of here she thinks and she sprints for the window. Five feet away and pain erupts from her calf. Shila crumbles to the ground and rolls over to see a dagger buried up to the hilt. “Fuck you, you little twat. I am going to give you to my guards and let them each rape you until their cocks can’t get hard anymore. Nobody attacks me like that.” The Chancellor roars at the drow as he stalks towards her. Blood pouring out of his broken nose.

The Chancellor stands above her, staring hate down on her. Shila holds one of her swords up to keep him at bay, but he just knocks it aside. The sword skitters across the room landing next to a shelf full of books. She lifts her other sword up with both of her hands. This is not the way it was supposed to go, Shila thinks. “HAHAHA your pathetic attempts to stop me are cu...” the chancellor tries to say just as a huge explosion shakes the entire building. The chancellor loses his footing and tumbles down. Shila’s sword erupts from his back. His eyes wide with surprise and horror. Just as the door is kicked down and the guards come streaming in.

The group of paladins could see the smoke and fire from miles away. How did an army of this size get in without an alarm? The group had ridden through a huge hole in the northern wall. “Kill any goblin or orc you come across!!” Elbeor yells, as him and his steed go thundering through the streets. Godric can't help but think this is partly their fault. If they hadn't been tracking the group then maybe they wouldn't have come here? Who could know the motives of these creatures? The only thing we can do now is help the city.

Godric and a battalion of his men turn a street corner and see a host of goblins chasing and attacking any human they can see. “To battle men!” Godric yells and he runs towards the goblins. The first one is dead before it even knows danger had come. He kills two more goblins quickly and the hairs on his neck rise up. Up comes his shield as he whips around. An arrow catches in it right at eye level. Standing thirty feet away is a huge orc. The bow he just shot looks oddly familiar. Scanning the area he finally sees the bodies of two of his own near this orc.

“YOU SON OF A BITCH!!!” Godric screams and he rushes towards the orc. The orc is a couple inches taller than he. One massive tusk juts from his lower jaw, the other broken at some point in its life. It is adorned with many tattoos and piercings. Godric knows this will be a tough fight. The orc drops the bow and picks up its giant maul and swings it at him once he is in range. Godric drops and goes into a roll, going under the wide swing of the maul. He pops back to his feet, kicking at the knee of the orc as he does. The orcs knee snaps backwards, bone splintering as it does. The orc drops down to the ground clutching at its ruined leg. It doesn't have to be in pain long as Godric’s sword sweeps across lopping its head clean off.

Godric turns towards his fallen comrades knowing in his heart they are already dead. He scans the battlefield for another opponent to take his anger out on when a crash is heard behind him. He turns around in time to see a figure come crashing out of a second story window and crash to the road below. Godric's run towards the figure. When he arrives he finds a female Drow laying on the ground. She seems to be bleeding from a wound on her leg and a few more on the rest of her. Most likely from the glass.

“It seems we have a thief among us” Godric says to the Drow. Shila looks up at him “blasted I just don't have any luck today”. She notices the holy crest on his chest. “Do what you must then Knight.” The sheer beauty of the creature catches him off guard. He is at a loss for words. “Umm… by Abkel’s ...swift blade… what were you doing in there?” Godric asks with clear trepidation on his face. “You're a smart looking man. Isn't it obvious? I was stealing from the chancellor. We all know that greedy pig didn't need it.” Shila says without any emotion. Godric seems to have composed himself. He starts to unsheathe his great sword from his back. “I'll take that as a confession, then With Abkel’s blade I must deliver Justice for your actions”

The two guys had left the Brass Dagger a few minutes before. Diero had grabbed his axe and ran out the door, laughing the whole way. Darvin, not wanting the big man to do something stupid quickly followed. Pulling out his bow and notching an arrow as he went. The two now found themselves in a sea of goblins. Diero was surrounded on all sides by goblins, but if it bothered him it didn't show. He just screamed in rage and swung his battle-axe around. Killing two or three at a time. Darvin however didn't like to be that close. So he had found a nice spot and was now picking away at any of the creatures that tried to come up behind Diero. This was not the first time they had used this tactic.

“We should really find your father now! There's a good chance he knows what's going on!” Darvin yells at Diero through the chaos. “Diero’s dad is smart man! He will be here, do not worry little man. He will go where the fighting is thickest. Just like Diero!” Diero’s axe went up high looking to split a goblin in half. Before it could descend an arrow took the goblin right in eye and it collapsed. Diero shoots a look towards Darvin in which he just responds with a sly grin. A sharp pain in his side has Diero spinning back around. The goblin that just stabbed him squeals and turns to run. Diero grabs it by the back of his head, turns it around and smashes his face into his axe.

A booming voice rises above the sounds of combat. One hundred yards away stands a massive Orieno. His dark skin and multiple tattoos is a dead giveaway. This must be Diero’s father Darvin. The man is issuing orders as a mass of men go rushing into battle. He has a striking resemblance to Diero. Same style and piercings. “HAHAHA Diero tell you father would come here. Father is a smart man. Now we will slaughter this filth together” Diero bellows and goes rushing back into battle two fold. Darvin notches another arrow and takes aim but something catches his eye. A small bright red orb the size of a balled fist goes flying towards the new group.

The fireball erupts right in the middle of all the fighting. “Mother fucker!!” Darvin says as he tries to see through all of the smoke. Everything has gone quiet. No sounds of battle, the only thing that can be heard is some groaning. Finally Darvin spots Diero. He's still alive and is slowly rising back up to his feet. Movement catches his eye and he turns to see Diero’s father resting on one knee. Half of his face looks like it was melted off. How he is even alive is amazing. More movement comes from behind Draeveon. Darvin can't make out who it is. He has a cowl pulled low over his face. He stops in front of Draeveon and he seems to be saying something to him. Something isn't right.

Just as Darvin starts to move. The hooded person jerks Draeveon’s head back and makes a quick motion from left to right. He promptly falls over. “NOOOOOOOOO, YOU FUCKING BASTARD” Diero screams and he's already on his feet sprinting over the dead bodies. The hooded man turns around and gives a smile. Diero can just make out what looks like a half moon scar over his right eye and then he's gone. He falls to his knees next to his father but it's too late. His father is gone, his throat torn wide open.

Shila sees the Knight pull his sword from off his back. So this is it huh, she thinks and she closes her eyes. There's too much I still need to do though. My family needs to pay for what they have done. Money I need to steal, friends to laugh with. Everything crosses her mind in an instant. Nothing happens though, so she affords a peak. The Knight has laid his sword on her shoulder and is saying a prayer. The wound in her calf is knitting itself shut. “Why haven't you killed me Sir Knight?”

Godric finishes his spell and looks down at her. “Abkel has informed me that you do not yet deserve Justice and has spared you.” He holds his hand out and says “My name is Godric; I am a Knight of the Holy Judgement.” She takes his hand and informs him that her name is Shila. “Leave whatever you have taken from the Chancellor's house and let's go. Goblins and Orcs have invaded the city and are killing innocent people. We must help them.” The ground rumbles as a loud explosion comes from a few streets away. “Quickly we must make haste”

People were still running and screaming everywhere. Godric and Shila make their way towards the explosion. A man with a cowl pulled over his head bumps into Shila, “Watch where you are going cur” he spits at her. She notices the scar above his eye. He's lucky they are in a hurry; else she would give him a matching one on the other eye. They arrive on the sight of the explosion to find nothing but destruction. Charred bodies lay everywhere, some of them missing various limbs. However two people still survive. They are crouched down over what looks like another person. Godric and Shila make their way over to them, quickly scanning for more enemies as they move.

Darvin hears movement behind him. He quickly spins on his knee his bow level and ready to fire. He notices that it is not more goblins or orcs approaching and lowers his bow. “Sorry about that there, fucking goblins got me all out of sorts right now. Someone just dropped a damn fireball on me mate’s father and took out half a damn block.” Darvin says not sure why he is explaining himself to the newcomers. He must have realized that this one was a Holy Knight. “It’s quite alright; it has been a chaotic night. I am sorry about your father sir. Is there anything we can do to help?” Godric asks. “Unfortunately I doubt it. We just need a moment and then we will be off to rid this planet of some more fuckin goblins” Darvin replies with a determined look upon his face. Godric nods at him and scans the area. The ground begins to shake every few seconds. “It doesn’t seem like you will get a moment however” Godric says as he nods off in a direction. Darvin and Diero both look up to see a hill giant lumbering towards them. The creature is already missing half of its right arm and is bleeding from several wounds but the thing is still a towering creature close to thirteen feet tall and it is dragging a tree behind it with its good arm.

*****

Diero leaps to his feet, grabbing his axe and darts off towards the giant, screaming all the while. “Damn it Diero, can we not come up with some kind of plan first?” Darvin says and he loads his next arrow. “Fear not, we are here to help. Come now Shila, it is time to prove your innocence” Godric smiles and he too rushes off toward the giant. Shila pulls out her bow and takes aim “I’m not getting anywhere close to that thing” and she lets go her first shot. The arrow thuds right into the giant's shoulder and it lets out a loud roar and starts running as well.

Diero reaches the giant and leaps into the air, hoping to bury his axe into the things chest. Hill giants aren’t known for their intelligence but they are strong and the tree came around faster than Diero expected and smashes into him midflight. He goes flying thirty feet away, crashing into a nearby building where he lays limp. Two more arrows bury themselves into the giant. It staggers back a step and Godric is upon it. Godric slashes out with sword leaving a deep gash on its leg. The giant tries to kick out with its other leg but Godric easily sidesteps it and stabs the giant in that leg too for good measure.

Darvin loads his last arrow and let’s fly and watches as it sinks into the creature's neck. “Well looks like I’m joining those guys” Darvin says as he pulls his swords and sprints off towards the giant. Shila shaking her heads just pumps another arrow at it. The giant may be strong but it doesn’t have the training and speed Godric has. He continues to dodge and roll to avoid the massive beast. Scoring hit after hit. The giant moves to kick at the knight again and he sidesteps to the left. The giant however was expecting this and it brings the tree down from overhead. Godric has no choice but to try and block the tree. He shoves his shield and sword out in front of him. The tree slams down and snaps his sword and bending his shield down around his arm. The weight of the blow knocks him to the ground. A lesser man would have been crushed outright.

The giant lifts its leg looking to crush the downed knight who is barely conscious. Then the giant lets out a roar and spins around. Godric can see Darvin clinging to its back. Hanging from both swords which are buried hilt deep in its back. The giant drops its tree and manages to pluck Darvin from his back. He holds him aloft, looking to crush him in his mighty hands. Darvin lets out a scream of agony. A soft thump and Darvin falls to the ground. An arrow now protrudes from its left eye. Darvin gives a nod back to Shila and moves towards Godric. A ferocious scream stops him in his tracks. He turns to see Diero leap from the top of a building. His axe held up high over his head. The giant staggers and looks up just in time to see the Otieno bury the axe between its eyes. It falls down on its back while Diero rides him to the ground. The giant lays lifeless in the middle of the street. The group all look to each other with appreciation. They help each other up and gather their weapons. They stalk off into the starless night looking for more goblins to kill.
