The following story is non-fictional (real).

School had just finished when I was waiting for my friend, Damien. We usually go to the library to play chess. Today I heard something and should have said something.

***

I was so hungry it wasn’t funny but something made my stomach turn. I hadn’t eaten for a couple of hours and I had just finished P.E. (Physical Education). I arrived back at school to see one of my friends crying. The school councillor was sitting on a table in front of the scared girl.

I was going to ask what was wrong, but I thought it might be better to eavesdrop, just so no one knew I was being a sticky beak.

It turns out she had been crying because she had been suspended for a couple of days because of her attitude and for not taking out her facial piercings.

She was crying because she was scared of being suspended because she knew her father would abuse her for it. You could tell she had been abused by him before, by the way she was crying in fear, I could tell.

Her mother arrived and said it was my friends fault for getting suspended and offered to take her home. She said no because her father would abuse her. Her mother’s reaction to this was “That’s just the way he is!”. From that moment on I knew that he did this frequently.

I was going to offer to take her home with me but my mother and father would say: “It was none of your business, you shouldn’t have asked her in the first place.”

After that I thought of calling triple zero (emergency hotline) to report his behaviour. Then my mother and father would say: “It was none of your business, you shouldn’t have reported him in the first place.”

A few months before this occurred her mother broke up a fight to save her daughter from getting hurt. I also knew that her mother was afraid of her abusive husband.

I want to get involved but by then it was too late they had already left with the scared daughter and her sister along with her family that was there. I’m going to report it to child associations sometime, I don’t care what my mother and father say.

As they left the school my stomach churned. I hoped she would have the courage to defend herself before she gets killed.

This event happened on 23rd of November 2011. If you know someone in this situation stand up for your friends or yourself. It could save a life. Stop child abuse, it’s AGAINST THE LAW. You can be prosecuted for up to 6 years if you continue to beat your child.

Children are suffering from a hidden epidemic of child abuse and neglect. Over 3 million reports of child abuse are made every year in the United States; however, those reports can include multiple children. In 2009, approximately 3.3 million child abuse reports and allegations were made involving an estimated 6 million children.

Every day 5+ children die from child abuse / neglect. You can stop this.
