When Dmitri closed his eyes he was in his room alone. When he opened them, he stood on white plane that was warped slightly. Where his ceiling once was, there was a white sky with black scribbles dancing across it from end to end in all directions.

“At least I can get some peace and quiet here.” He sighed.

He was inside the book. A book he bought at a yard sale he happened upon on one of his walks. The old man that gave it to him had one of those faces that just said that he knew more than you, about everything. Dmitri never doubted that he did for a second. He was probably an emissary of Esoteria, a place that Dmitri made up. Esoterians know more than everyone, about everything. He decided to call the book The Book of Esoteria since he didn’t know what it was actually called. There were no instructions to summon The Great Old Ones so he assumed it wasn’t the Necronomicon, he also assumed that the owner of the book wouldn’t mind him giving at weird name either.

He enjoyed his peace and quiet amidst the pages of the book until he heard a voice from behind him.

“Hey there Demmi.”

“And then there’s this asshole…” Dmitri said under his breath.

He reluctantly turned his head to see the creature that appeared behind him. He winced and sucked his teeth the instant he laid eyes on it. It appeared human, or at the very least it was human-shaped. It’s skin was ink-black and its eyes were a glowing white. Its canine teeth, or what they would normally be considered, were pointed and practically looked like fangs. Its mouth was in a near perpetual smirk that just oozed condescension, but the strangest thing about the creature’s appearance was just how much it resembled Dmitri. It wore a black overcoat that trailed down to its grey shoes but for the rest of his attire, it simply mimicked what Dmitri was wearing.

“What was that? I couldn’t quite hear you.” the creature kept up his condescending smirk as he asked.

“Sorry Devi, let me spell it out for you.” Dmitri drew a pencil and began tracing letters in the air.

In the sky above them, it seemed as if an invisible pen, or pencil, was writing “And there’s THIS asshole!” in large letters.

“Harsh.” The creature chuckled.

He went by Devi. The God of Esoteria or so Dmitri liked to think. The Esoterians were a kind of people that would worship a being that would reflect the inner thoughts and feelings but why anyone would hail a jerk like this as their god was beyond him.

“Running away from your problems again Demmi. What is it this time? Did it finally hit you that you don’t actually have any problems to run away from? Well at least none that aren’t self-imposed. Shit how long did that take you? How old are you, 20? Cutting it kinda close there aren’t you? Someone like you who’s slowly letting himself away without many real prospects doesn’t have much time left in the real world. Hey you’re being awfully quiet. This book is willing to spell out anything you’re willing to write you know.” Snarled Demmi.

“Then how about this.” Said Dmitri waving his hand.

Suddenly letters flooded the page they were standing on and the page adjacent to it.

DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOUCHE BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAG.

“You’re cute.” said Devi sucking his teeth.

“You’re observant.” Dmitri flashed a smirk back at the creature behind him. “I knew this was a bad idea but if I knew you’d be on this page I’d have stayed in my room. Next time I’m starting on the Index.”

“There is no index smartass.” Devi scoffed.

“Shows what you know.” Dmitri scoffed back.

Dmitri closed his eyes and clasped his face in between his hands. When he opened his eyes he was back in his room alone. Well not quite alone…
