To the leaders of Africa,
Every day I turn on the television and the same images appear on the screen. Murder, violence, rape, torture, protests are thrown at my face at full speed and there’s nothing I can do but watch in sorrow. Every time I see this, my heart shatters not once, not twice, not three times but many more than you can imagine. It feels as if someone threw my heart on the ground and it broke like glass and then the person broke each little fragment of the broken pieces until there’s nothing left.
My name is Tosan and I’m fourteen years old. I was born in Ogbomosho Nigeria in 1996 and lived in Africa for about nine years. I know I may be nothing to you but a speck of dust...a small particle floating in the wind. I know that I am young but I deserve the right to be heard not only by you but by everyone else. You may not seemed to be concerned with the matters going on around you while you’re protected by high walls and a thousand body guards. You live like kings in your palaces away from the rest of the world.
I am here not as another creation of mass media but as a youth hunger for change. Growing up in Nigeria I knew death. I saw death. I walked with it. I saw violence. I saw abuse. I saw murder. As hard as I tried diverting myself away from reality thinking it was all an illusion I knew it wasn’t. I know how it feels to have someone you love shot in front of their own child. I know how it feels to be abused. I felt everything on this list before I even turned eight. I never really had a childhood. I never knew innocence.
Sometimes I’d wander why this happened. I cant help butask “What happened to Africa?” People run around the streets in chaos fuelled by anger and lust for power. Times are tough. The government doesn’t help them. Corruption rules Africa and you are all in the middle of it. A government helps its people. It doesn’t take everything away from them. At times I wonder how you feel when you see the homeless on the streets with nothing but the clothes they have on? How do you feel when you see a little child roaming through bins in search of food? Does your heart break when you see a child die in its mother’s arms? How and what do you feel when you see your country in shatters being torn apart? How?
Power and money are the things man lusts for. You are all in control. You have power and wealth, and yet you use it on yourselves buying planes and million dollar cars living the life in your palaces while your people suffer. They cry out but you don’t hear them? They call for change but you turn deaf ears. You rule them with an iron fist. Injustice rules the nation.
When you run to rule the country you make the people’s hearts beat with anticipation and joy. You make them believe life will be better. You promise them good education, jobs, services and money. Then you get the seat. You’re at the top of the chain and your promises evaporate into thin air while the people watch and wait.
I am writing to say that Africa need to change. YOU need to change because a cry is ringing from every corner of the continent for change. I want to see a better Africa. I want to see Africa grow and flourish. Every night I go on my knees and pray for the country I love so much. Please it’s already crumbling to dust. We need to fix to fix the problems going on in Africa. YOU need to make a change. YOU need to accept responsibility and look after your country. IT IS YOUR JOB!!! And please if your people aren’t happy with you and they want you to leave. Just leave. There’s no need to throw a tantrum. There’s no need to kill people because sorry that just shows you’re pathetic and low.
Please please take this seriously because it’s my dream to see Africa rise up to the top of the world. I’m sick and tired of seeing it as a poor, desolate and weak country. It’s time you, I and every African stood up to make a change.
Thank you for reading my letter and I pray you’ve seen the message I’ve tried getting across.
PLEASE TELL PEOPLE ABOUT THIS LETTER BECAUSE IT TAKES ONE PERSON TO MAKE AN IMPACT AND MANY TO CHANGE THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT.
