As a Christian, one of the things we are taught is that we should use quotes from the bible to fight back against the devil's attacks and temptations. In studying the book of Ephesians in the Greek, I found some interesting things in verse 17 in the sixth chapter about using the word of God as a weapon. Paul had a true gift for giving such vivid pictures, to relay the truth of God's word to his fellow Christians. In this I will try to relay the ideas of Paul.
As I read "the sword of the Spirit", the first thing that should be noted is that the true translation for the start of the verse is "And RECEIVE the helmet of THE salvation.." as opposed to the K.J.V., which reads, "And take the helmet of salvation.." which gives a different meaning to the start of the verse. It is very obvious the difference between taking something and receiving something. The second thing is that the sword we read about is a certain type of sword. In the Greek the word that is used for sword is MAKHAIRA, which is generally, a one-handed knife, with a slight backwards curve, used for close quarters combat. This same type of sword is used in John 18:10, when Peter cut off the ear of the servant of the High Priest, which makes sense that Peter the fisherman, would use a short sword and not a long battle sword. Another type of sword that is referred to is called a ROMPHIA, which is a double-edge, large broadsword, a sword that is used by Jesus in Revelation 1:16 and 19:15 as a sword of judgement. I know that as Christians we are to use the word of God as a weapon to combat Satan, but why would the sword of the Spirit, that we are to equip, be described as a short, close combat sword?
Upon further study I found that the Greek word used for the word "word" in Ephesians 6:17 is REMA, which means to recite, to speak a short quote, as opposed to the Greek word LOGOS, which is the thought out or the thought behind the spoken word. The word LOGOS is used to describe Jesus in in John 1:1. John is saying that Jesus is the planned, thought out, spoken word of God. The perfect example of a REMA is in Matthew 4:4-10, in these verses Jesus in speaking REMAs when He quotes perfectly the word of God to Satan. I thought it was funny that, even though the devil quoted from the Bible, which was Psalm 91:11-12, he left out verse 13, which states "Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under foot.", which seems to be a verse about the defeat of Satan! Even through it is very easy to see that Paul is saying that we should use the word of God as a weapon to combat Satan, I was amazed at how Paul said to use a short, close combat sword, and then to see that Jesus used short quotes to resist temptation. I believe that we should all learn and use the exact word of God to combat the attacks and temptations of the devil.
It is in no way a coincidence that Paul would describe the word of God in the same way that Jesus used it against the devil, and we as Christians should follow the lead of Jesus in our battle with the devil. God has given us a powerful weapon, the spoken word. We can see that words do have power, whether we use them to start wars, end wars, show love, or to cause pain, it is clear that what we say to each other can change reality. Just as when one should insult another person(child, wife), the effect can manifest it's self in the behavior of the person who was insulted. I believe that in Genesis 1:26, when God said "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.." He was saying that we are speaking beings, with the power to create or destroy with the utterance from our mouths. If we look back through history we can see that the ideas in a person's mind became reality when the idea was shared with others. When Einstein wrote his theory of relativity, and published it, it was manifested into reality, and changed the out come of a war. We can see how Hitler used the power of words to influence the attempted genocide of the Jewish people. We can also see the affect that the spoken word of God has on a person. When people hear the word of God, something happens, causing the to repent(repent means to have a changing of the mind). Our words have much power, and God's has more, we should all watch how we use our words, and even more so, how we use God's. God wants us to use His words for encouragement, and to battle the Devil, not each other. Remember, " ...receive the helmet of the salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which IS the word of God."
