Earth - Crisis

The television flickered, the Russian Premier making his speech. Conrad sat on the sofa, Sylvia beside him. Both very eagerly awaiting the Premier’s plan to air.

"Comrades! Your days of scrambling for scraps will end! The oil has stopped flowing, and America has fallen, along with its allies! No longer must we worry about another adversary! We are the most powerful nation on Earth! We will dominate the world! We will have our reigns stretch across every single continent on this planet! We will have the Lunar Corporation, and their resources!”

All you must do is sacrifice yourself for Mother Russia! Fight along side your comrades! Fight for your children! Fight for your grandchildren! Fight... For... The Motherland! We have no enemies! We will rule the world!” The Premier stopped speaking and signaled something to the camera man. The screen flickered and switched to a montage of Russia’s less repaired areas.

Conrad shifted uneasily. “I don’t know if the Premier knows what he’s saying, world domination and all that. Doesn’t that sound a bit like a cliché?” Conrad knew he would be the one to go to war. Sylvia was a woman, and Russia would not allow a woman into the army.

So what? Russia is the only standing, developed country on Earth? Who’s to stop us?” Sylvia exclaimed.

But, Sylvia… I-I worry that you will get hurt without me there to help.”

Who would want to hurt me? Everything will get better if we succeed.”

Just because we go to war doesn’t mean that everyone will assume that we will succeed. Sylvia, we must win the war first, even if it only takes a year or two.”

Then stand here and watch while all of your comrades fight for you! Conrad, how can you stand here and watch while all of Russia fights for you!”

Sylvia, that’s not fair. You know-” Conrad stopped mid-sentence. On the television was a photo. It depicted one of the worst places in Russia. It was the city. It was horrible. Conrad had never seen just how badly the city looked from the sky. It was so blackened and ugly that the orbital satellites showed a brown spot amongst all the snowy white land. As it zoomed in, he saw in more and more detail just how horrifying the city looked from above. The Premier seemed serious about world domination. “If that’s what it takes to save Russia… I will do it. For you, Sylvia,”

At that, Conrad left. He climbed into his half-track and drove off.

Sylvia pulled out a communicator, convinced that Conrad was going to be gone a while.

Hello? – Yes, this is Sylvia Kurkov. – I need to speak with the CEO immediately."

Conrad finally saw the camp. He stopped at the blockade and turned off his half-track. A soldier armed with a rifle came up. “You here to sign up?” He asked.

Yes,” Conrad replied.

Follow me, sir.” The soldier escorted Conrad into the camp HQ.

After and awkward silence, Conrad said, “Nice place you got here.”

Well it keeps you warm, but trust me when I say it’s a shack,” The soldier replied.

Well, a shack's fine. I’m from Moscow.”
“Moscow, that sad city? Then you must live in a worse shack. This would be a mansion for you.”

Well, it’s not as bad on the inside as it looks on the outside.”

What, this place?”

No, I mean Moscow.”

Moscow is a pile of rubble. How can it be better than a pile of rubble?”

Because the buildings are still decent to live in, decent enough for us at least.”

Well I’d better go back to watch. Go to that door and take your left.”

Conrad listened to the soldier and went to the door and to his left. The room was filled with smoke from the officers' cigars. As he entered the office he saw a distinguished man with his feet at the desk.

As the officer riffled through his papers, he looked up at Conrad, a cigar in his mouth. “Conrad…” He said, his accent thick. After searching the papers he stopped. He took the cigar out of his mouth and said, his eyebrow raised, “Conrad Kurkov, yes?”

Yes, sir”
“And you wish to join in on the fun?”

Of course, sir.”

If you can make it through training, you’ll be out of here by... Hmm... Next month. Unless you stay for extra training. ”I’ll stay for that”. I will go fetch your papers. Wait here.”

Sylvia sat in the shuttle, in the middle of a conversation with the CEO. “They plan on attacking soon. I just hope it doesn’t go too far,” she said.

The States will stop them. Eurasia is just too weak to go against those machines,” replied the CEO.

"I don't know... Are you sure that the UCS has enough resources stockpiled? You do realize that Premier Gretzky has a huge amount of manufacturing prowess, right?"

"Well, the States aren't exactly limited to resources. Remember, they are all machines."

"I know, it's so hard to comprehend. An army of robots? What a scary thing to face." Sylvia paused for a moment, "Of course, why would we be worried? We live on the Moon!"

"The States are very resourceful. If they cared to take us out, they would find a way to do so very quickly."

"Well, as far as I can tell, they don't have any reason. Unless they want an ally, I don't see why they would even bother with us. We aren't a threat. At least, as long as we remain commercial."

"I'm sure the rumors have gotten out by now. You stated yourself, the Premier plans on going after us soon. I don't think it's just coincidence that he wants to go after a corporation that is secretly planning on going military."

"Premier Gretzky isn't very smart, though. We've seen him in action before... All flash, little substance. So no results"

"That wasn't even a war, Sylvia. It was a petty argument that turned into a fire-fight. I guess you didn't see the massive amounts of tanks sitting in his streets. Remember, Russia and their allies are the only developed countries still standing. He doesn't have any other enemies right now."

"The UCS and us. That's it? Well, I'm sure that Jackal Tech will help, if we get involved. You know how Mr. Powers is. Too bad he kept underground, though. I guess it's only reasonable that his plan is secretive, too."

"What plan?"

"The Mars Colony, remember? You briefed us all on it last week."

"Oh, yes. I guess I'm just getting too old for this. Even with modern technology, 48 years is just not a person’s prime."

The pilot interrupted, "We are landing. Grab your seat belts."

Conrad arrived at the training camp, anxious for his first military experience. He rode through a security gate and was led to a an office. The man at the desk spoke.

"You must be Kurkov, our newest member! I am Colonel Dimitri. You will start training immediately. Here is a standard issue Eurasian Dynasty military training outfit." Conrad put on the outfit and observed its light red color with gold stars on the shoulders.
"The regular outfits are dark green to represent the Dynasty colors, but red is for trainees." Dimitri said. Conrad was escorted to his room, where three columns of bunk beds with footlockers were housed. The guard pointed out his bed and said,

"Get some rest; you'll need it for tomorrow's training."

Conrad was startled to hear a bugle. He then dressed up and stood at perfect attention. I can't wait to see what our new squad leader is like, he thought. The door opened, and a man with amber hair and tan skin entered.

"I am Sargent Smith." He spoke with a slightly exaggerated Eurasian accent. "You will take orders directly from me. For now, get to know each other. Be ready to start training at 0700 hours. Dismissed!" Conrad started to scout out the other trainees so he could try to make some friends. One young man stood out.

"Hey there! I'm Conrad," he said. The young boy turned around, smiling.

"I'm Ivan.” “so why did you join Ivan?” “I joined because it's my family tradition. Every man goes to the army. I was even born in an army hospital. Like my father always said about our family, 'You were born in the army, and you will die in the army.'" Suddenly, Sergeant Smith burst through the doors and said, "After some deliberation I have decided to set up our ranks; I have chosen Cadet Kurkov to fill the role of cadet officer."

"Really, me?" Conrad replied.

"Yes. You had the highest score on the test of all of your members. Your job will be to keep the rest of these unruly cadets in line when I'm not around, understand? You are in charge making sure that all of the cadets keep the quarters clean, and you are to ration the food as necessary. Also, you will write me a report on the progress of the cadets each week."

Conrad did good for the first few weeks even got an early promotion to a sergeant.  he made friends with most of the cadets even the quiet Reznov (refer to character bios for full description) and others. after a while he had the top scores in sniping and tactics. Everything was looking up for Conrad until one day about a month into his training…

Conrad had awakened to a shock. Part of the room was demolished and there was chaos everywhere. Conrad was still woozy and was in shock. Hearing not the screaming but the beating of his own heart getting faster and faster he finally snapped out of it and ran for it grabbing his custom sniper rifle he fitted himself and charging out to a safe place. Conrad finally made it to a large hill overlooking the camp, he scoped in to see what was happening. Soldiers screaming in agony for help others yelling and some hiding, bullets flying “robots? Oh my gosh! The U.C.S. is attacking?!”

Conrad started aiming and picking off the enemy and was doing well until felt something was wrong… he turned around and saw an what appeared to be a heavy android a humanoid looking robot that carry’s a machine gun. Suddenly everything went into slow motion and Conrad’s heart was racing until the androids gun jammed and Conrad had seen his chance. Conrad pulled out his knife and raced towards the monster and thrusts the knife right into its neck. Its blue glowing eyes start to fade as he becomes paralyzed and falls to his knees.

Conrad remembered what had learned in boot camp. All types of androids have the hydraulic fluid lines going in the neck. Conrad knew that stabbing it there would paralyze it. At that moment Conrad seized this opportunity and took its shield generator and put it on himself. He turned it on and a red bubble surrounded him and then faded.

Conrad had also found a radar system in its head and attached it to his radar. Conrad could now see all enemy positions and his own allies too. “I might be able to win this.” Conrad thought. Conrad then took out his communicator and radioed to his allies to see who was still there. “hello can anyone hear me please respond.” “this Ivan here, over.” “this is Reznov I’m here.” “ Good, Ivan you are your men go south and hide behind those quarters. The enemy will follow you and reznov’s units will flank from both sides.” The enemy squadron followed them behind and reznov’s group pounced on them. A hail of bullets rained down on them and destroyed about twenty-five enemy droids.

Conrad continues giving orders and the momentum starts to shif in his favor until the enemy brings in reinforcements.” Conrad. Another enemy dropship has arrived. We might not make it through this one.” Reznov said calmly as if nothing it was a minor problem. Conrad then told everyone to retreat and head south to a small town called Berdychiv until they could get reinforcements.

As Conrad and his troops headed towards the town Reznov heard something strange. At first he thought it was animals but then he knew what it really was. “Stop. A group a gun droids are headed here, get down and don’t move no matter what.” The droids pass through slowly looking for signs of life. Suddenly Ivan coughs… The guns droids immediately turn around and shoot in his area. Conrad tries to get up but Reznov catches him before he is noticed. Reznov looks at Conrad and shakes his head slowly. Conrad knew he was right but wanted to destroy the fiends that had hurt his comrade.

After they passed Conrad got and went to Ivan. Conrad checked for signs of life, but it too late, Ivan was dead. “dang (damn), someone pick up the body. He deserves a proper burial.” Conrad said as he walks away to continue on the path. Reznov goes to up to Conrad to talk to him “It’s like me to say this but are you ok Conrad. He was your squad mate and you barely seem shaken up about it.” Reznov said. “I’m ok I’ll have to deal with it later right now we need to get to that town and then take back the base.” Conrad said seemingly on the verge of crying.

They finally make it to the town. An almost desolate place with starving people made Conrad More motivated to win the war. But for now this would now serve as a military base. Conrad Called in for reinforce and after a month the whole city was a booming military installation. Conrad went to the control room to hear the new intelligence his men had gathered. Conrad was now a captain and was given a steel cross the highest medal you can get in the E.D. army for his heroism and leadership during the takeover at the Ukraine National Army Base.

Conrad found out that they had set up a new kind of anti-aircraft tech and no E.D. bomber could get into the base. Therefore a ground assault was needed. Conrad would lead a plan of attack which had not been decided at that point. During the meeting a gruff looking man came in with a grim announcement. “Colonel dimitri and sergeant smith are still missing and considered armed and dangerous. He seemed to be the one who gave critical information about the Ukraine base.” The man said. Conrad sighed and went back to his meeting. “wait sir there’s more. About your wife… she disappeared about the same time and he colonel and is also suspected of treason too.” Said the man cautiously. “I see.” Said Conrad. ”well I should attend this matter then. Excuse me gentlemen.” Conrad leaves to a private room for more details.” are you saying Sylvia is a spy?” “It appears so sir.” “Damn it (darn it). I loved her. But I guess she didn’t love me back. First Ivan then dimitri and smith and now Sylvia. almost all my friends and family are now dead or spies. This is not why I joined the army.” “I’m sorry sir.” “its ok. But now there’s something I need to do to win.” Conrad had thought of a plan of attack a risky one at that. After much deliberation in the control room they finally concede to Conrad’s plan. As he walks out to tell Reznov he remembers all the good times he ever had in his life. From before the disaster with his family to present day with his best now best friend Reznov.

Based on more intelligence the enemy was going to get more reinforcements soon if they did not act would start taking more bases in the surrounding area if nothing was done. They had very little troops against the U.C.S. robots other than the now mass produced shields Conrad found in the takeover. The radar Conrad found was unable to be reproduced and was given back to Conrad to help him in the final battle. Conrad had left with Reznov and lead a small force with artillery 5 miles from the base. “So Conrad, what’s the plan.” Reznov asked him anxiously.” you’ll have to hook up the main force.” Conrad said. “But why cant I stay and fight with you.” Reznov had objected. “let me tell you the whole plan.”

But Conrad!  That’s suicide, you’ll die with that strategy.  Isn’t there something else you can do?” Resnov said.

No, they haven’t found our main force yet, if we use all our artillery on the base and guard it with the strike force they will be forced to send the remaining enemy reinforcements and our main force can move in” Conrad replied as he was getting set up.  “Conrad the enemy moves very fast and we already contacted HQ and they don’t have any reinforcements for us, the enemy will crush you”. Resnov objected.

They continued arguing until Conrad finally admits something. “you’re the only person I have left now, you connect with the main force and lead the assault on the command center.  When the enemy gets to my position, I’ll drop the bomb”, Conrad said.  As Conrad was about to set out and the transport came Reznov wanted one last word with Conrad. “Conrad before I go I wanted to say… Thanks for everything friend.”

They than gave each other hug and saluted one another.  After Reznov left Conrad headed for the loudspeaker and made the announcement.  “Brothers!  Now is when we truly serve the motherland!  The enemy will come for us and we must fight until our very last breath.  Those who have families to return to have already departed, those of you who have chosen to stay have already honor in death.  But we will not die in vain my brothers!  For the main force hidden behind the base will strike when the enemy is in chaos.  It has been an honor serving with you men.  We have all lost so much in this battle.  Friends, family members, the colonel, and even the motherland itself.  But now we will avenge our fallen loved ones and take back our base.  Long live the Earth Dynasty and Long Live the Motherland”. Conrad turned off the speaker and headed to setup the base for the overwhelming assault soon to come.  He set up the artillery and set the soldiers up in a defensive formation.  After that he sent out the U.A.V. with the megaton bomb equipped to it.

With the plane hovering and the soldiers in place Conrad was ready to give the order.  He had no more regrets like he did before “Fire” Conrad shouted as he looked at his sniper rifle with the special pierced rounds.  It was loud as the artillery was firing when an even louder rumbling was heard.  Conrad knew that the brutes were coming.

Conrad looked through his scope at the incoming enemies.  They sent at least 3,000 enemy troops which leaves only an estimated 400 troops left at their command center against Conrad’s main force of 5000 to secure the base and let the anti-aircraft defenses back on their side preventing any reinforcements from coming as Conrad was thinking it through his head a bullet comes right at him and hits his shields.  Conrad’s heart was racing as the blue aura like shield saved his life for the time being.  At that point Conrad had knew the battle had begun.  Conrad checked on the U.A.V. to see if it was in position yet but he was that the engine had been damaged and was moving 50% slower and would take another 15 minutes to reach its position.

Conrad started giving orders the best he could but he could only hold out for so long.  Conrad had two radar maps.  One from base to show his units and one enemy radar from the heavy android he had killed during the takeover.  Conrad had an edge, but not enough to defeat an enemy unit with so much insurmountable strength.  His only was to use the bomb to send them into chaos. “right flank throw your grenades thirty degrees north into the enemy trench”. “Yes Sir” the soldiers shouted trusting Conrad’s orders, the grenades went off and when pieces of metal started to uncloak, “It’s a hit Sir”.  That takes care of their stealth units, but we still need to deal with their shock troopers” Conrad said to himself as he looks at how much time is left.  “Only five minutes left. Now shadow squad aim to your right and in ten seconds, shoot the enemy through the wall” The soldiers cock their guns, reload and aim their guns at the wall and after ten seconds, a barrage of bullets go through the wall and the robots are ripped to pieces.

“One minute left.” Conrad said, suddenly delta squad calls in, “Sir, a heavy android has entered the battlefield” a soldier cried out “stay calm and get behind cover.  Now tell me your position.” “Yes sir it’s two miles north and one mile west of the base ??? “Found you just stay calm and wait till I tell you to move” Conrad aims carefully when he fires the order. “Throw it now!” The soldier tosses the grenade and the robot jumps back to dodge it.  Conrad saw his chance and made the shot.  “The robot can’t dodge in the air so even if he detected the bullet he could not do anything to stop the special rounds.” Conrad thought.  His plan worked and the android was hit.  A big crack in it’s red shield had begun to fall like broken glass taking in slow motion and disappearing into smaller and smaller pieces until invisible to the naked eye.  Conrad looked again and saw the androids neck had been hit, liquid started to gush out and soon was reduced to just husk that no longer could even fire a gun.  Conrad then shot the androids arms to disable its weapons keeping the other robots from using them.  The arms dropped like rocks one by one, left arm, then the right arm.  Its limbs falling off piece by piece until it was no more than a piece of metal.  Conrad checked the U.A.V. and the time had come.  Conrad slowly took out the switch as thoughts went faster than he could process and he could barely aim now that he was too nervous to even look at the remote.  Conrad closed his eyes and pressed the button and a “click” is heard.  “It’s been released, Get ready brothers” as the bomb was falling they turned towards Conrad and saluted him. To which the bombs wipe them out.  “That’s the signal move! Move! Move!” Reznov shouts.

The army rushed in and took the base successfully.  After that, Reznov goes to Conrad’s grave.  Always remembering his last heroic words “Conrad Kurkov , has proved his worth.” Right before the signal cut off.  After Reznov had heard that the L.C. and U.C.S. had made an alliance, he knew that the war finally started.
