There was a little Charcoal Boy

with large doe eyes and chalky cheeks

walking tip toe through the streets

and every sign and post and brick

felt alien and white and slick

like walking through a house of glass

leaving smeary, chalky, charcoal prints

following him where all he went

leaving black and timid stains

slowly, and quiet, he melted ‘way

his body left in those smeary streaks

for how could any Charcoal Boy

survive in streets so White and Neat.
