It’s 3:45 a.m. and I’ve just received a telephone call from my wife Laura. I couldn’t believe that it was really her. She had been missing for almost a year. She has been missing for almost a year. I’d given her for being dead.
During the phone call she told me that she would see me the next noon time for lunch. After the conversation, I was thoroughly awake. So I got up and went to the kitchen to put on some coffee. I’m glad that it was Saturday and I didn’t have to go to work.
A few seconds later the coffee was ready. I poured a hot cup of it and went to the living room to turn on the TV. I tuned into the early morning news. They were discussing the floods in New Orleans and what it would take to restore the city. This I listened to for about an hour. Then I decided to get some breakfast. Seeing as it was early, I decided to treat myself to breakfast at the local eatery. It was brand new and served great omellettes.
The next thing I did was to shower and shave. The warm water from the shower was very exhilarating. It woke me up also. After dressing, I turned off the coffee pot, put on my jacket and left the apartment. The time was 5:15 a.m.
Donna’s Coffee Shop was only a mile away from where I lived at. When I arrived there were just six other people there. They I assumed were early risers like me. The hostess showed me to a table and brought me some coffee. The coffee was so hot that it burned my lips and throat. After spending several minutes looking over the menu, I decided upon French toast and orange juice.
Maria my waitress told me, “Sir, your order will be ready in a few minutes. Enjoy your coffee.”
Several minutes later, Maria brought the orange juice. I drank it down. Exactly ten minutes later my breakfast arrived. Maria intoned, “Here is your breakfast. I hope that you’ll enjoy your meal. I’ll also leave the check now if it is ok.”
I gobbled down the meal and went to pay the check. I left a three dollar tip and then went back to my car for the drive home.
The door I unlocked quietly because I didn’t want to disturb the neighbors. On my answering machine was another message from Laura. I read it as it stated, “Tomas, this is Laura. I’ll be there today at noon. I hope that everything will be okay between us. See you then.”
After that I wondered what she was going to do and say when we got together. When she comes, we’ll have lunch here at my place her wanting to get together and her being alive disturbed me. I looked at my clock and thought that she’ll be here in three hours.
At the stroke of twelve, the door bell rang. I went to the door and there Laura was. In her absence, she had become more beautiful.
I was so startled that I was speechless. She asked me, “Well aren’t you
going to at least say, Hi!”
“Yeah, how are you?”
“I’m doing ok. Why did you ever leave my life in the first place?”
“Tomas, I was tired of the old life. So I went to another city and changed my name. My first name is still Laura. My last name is Venegas. I have a job and I’m doing fine. I also get to travel on the job and I have a place of my own.”
“Why did you come here today?”
“I just wanted to see you for the last time. I understand that we are divorced.”
“Laura, it has been three years since you were last here. Our marriage has been annulled and I have another woman that I’m seeing.”
“Tomas, I thought that we would still be able to see each other.”
“Laura, I’m sorry you weren’t here. So I had our marriage annulled. I even got a divorce before the annulment. I’ll even give you a copy of the information along with the decree. If you wait for a second, I’ll go run a copy on my computer.”
I went to the den and started up my computer. A few seconds later, I had all of the paper work printed out for her to see. I went back to the other room to give the copies to her.
Laura took them and read them for a few minutes. “Tomas, I guess that this finishes our life together. I’ll be leaving now. I don’t want to stay for lunch.”
I opened the door for her and she left quietly. Afterwards I went into the kitchen and made me some lunch. In a few months, she’ll just be a blur in my past. I won’t even remember her.
