Summary

This is a poem about how alcoholism effects people
The part about mistaking the street light for the moon is true
After leaving my friend whom the poem is loosely based upon because he would not stop and because I was enabling him
He hit rock bottom and became homeless
I am happy to say after three years he has quit drinking
we are friends
I support his sobriety

More than once he mistook

the street lamp for the moon
painful attempts to switch off the darkness
by blinking his eyelids
shades -half closed
he saw stars
millions of scars not yet healed
he descended the stairs
fell down full flights while
imaging he had wings
looked out the mirrored window
his hands reflecting back like a mime
mocking his time spent in a box
a mixture of resentment and setiment
no filters
just dirt hurt and smoke
pinpricks on a non celestial body
opening closet doors
looking for rest rooms
there were no hangers
he was both wired and unplugged
throwing his dirty secrets on concrete floors
he had no public laundry to dry
besotted and soiled
wet yet throat burning liquid hot
he lay among the snow
with cast off banana peels and beer bottles
waiting for limp manna
there was no cock to wake his dawn
passing out  time
and endless time
again fallen
a dark angel
never ascending
faintly remembering between sips
of pseudo ambrosia
the difference between ground and ceiling
floor and sky
drowning in the golden river Styx
never crossing
he lay there
looking for the moon
