I had to write it for school. I understand the whole Civil Rights topic is overdone, but that was the particular unit we were doing in English. The reason why I put my own feelings into the work is because that was the 'format'. =) Yes, I know it's dreadful. It's based on the picture attached.

Central High

hot, stuffy, choking air

shouts and cat calls bounce off the bricks

like rubber balls of hate

state troopers hover at the crowd's edge

physically present

but doing nothing

Hazel Massery

screaming her furious regards for the students

later regretting her words

a young Black girl

striding through the mob

head held high

face emotionless

sunglasses obscuring her fright

book tucked cozily

into the crook of her bare arm

curly dark hair bouncing merrily with each step

crisp white blouse rustling

checkered skirt swaying hesitantly in the wind

matching the girl's mood

it's as though someone

edited her into the photograph

after it was taken

a solitary, dark girl

pressed in by a rabble of angry, screeching Whites

she doesn't belong

doesn't belong at all

and she knows it

what is wrong with these people?

don't they understand

that it's not her fault?

that segregation

isolation

separation

isn't these nine

young

Black students'

fault?

innocence

a beacon

bright

white

noticeable

a young Black girl

striding through the mob.
