I just signed up at an online dating site and I regret to report that most of the men look pretty disappointing. I know that makes me sound completely shallow but I'm really not. A bald head or even a beer gut won't get in my way of having a good time, but is it too much to ask to please stop sending me profiles of guys who look like my grandfather.

I know it's unreasonable but what I really want is a boyfriend who looks like James McAvoy. However I've done that before - gone out with a guy because he looks like a celebrity that I'm crushing on - and it usually doesn't end up being a good idea. There's those minor pesky details, like their personality, that keep getting in the way.

For example, I spent most of my junior year of high school going steady with this older guy who looked (I thought) like Joe Strummer from The Clash. I wasted so much of my time trying to reconcile his morose and completely humorless personality with his sexy and exciting celebrity looks. I know I'll have your sympathy when I say it was nearly impossible to break it off with my rockstar-looking boyfriend even if in reality he was an Eeyor.

So maybe no James McAvoy for me but definitely no geriatrics either please. I'd be perfectly happy settling for a guy who photographed poorly but when we meet on our first coffee date his smile lights up the room.
