ICICI Bank ,India’s second-largest lender, said on Friday Joint Managing Director Chanda Kochhar would succeed Chief Executive K.V. Kamath who retires in April 2009.Chanda has become inspiration for  thousands of Indian women who dream of breaking the glass ceiling in India Inc.
May the coming years bring into spotlight more and more Indian women like Indra Nooyi,Padamshree Warrior, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw,Anu Agha and many more who have successfully carved a niche for themselves in a man’s bastion. A survey reveals that only a small number of women hold top positions in corporate houses worldwide, while in India only 14 per cent of women make it to the top management level. The world over, gender equality remains a contentious issue. Political and corporate rhetoric does not reflect the ground reality. When Indian politicians talk about `inclusive growth’, women are never factored even though their status is that of minorities.
The Indian society though much advanced than it was fifty years back; women are still obliged to follow the tradional roles. These women have shown that one can manage both career and family with equal ease. Till today Indian girls are educated with the sole intention of betrothing a well to do and qualified husband. Education to the girl child has to be given more priority if we want our society to advance. Data shows that the most developed countries have the highest female literacy ratio. We need to focus on this cause; as an educated mother will carry forward the importance of education to her children.
Tradionally women are supposed to look after home and children; while men are supposed to be bread winners. With changing times women are showing that they can manage both their careers as well as families well. People may say that so the women who stay at home to look after their children must be usless. The answer to them would give the freedom to the woman to herself decide whether she wants to manage one or both.
