For Christmas last year, my sister and brother in law organized a family trip to Sedona, AZ. What an amazing place. All of our sightseeing destinations were spectacular. If you have not been to this beautiful part of the country, I highly recommend it! The only down side of the week was our day at the Grand Canyon. Several had never seen it, and it had been a long time for the rest of us. So off we went in two cars to view the majestic canyon. In a blizzard. It was very…white. So much for that hot idea, but we did get a good laugh about it later.

Anyway, back to Sedona. We decided one day to go see the famous Church of the Holy Cross built by a Frank Lloyd Wright in 1956. It’s built into the red rock face of a cliff, is beautiful, and welcomes people of all faiths and walks of life. The chapel itself, with sweeping views of the breathtaking Sedona landscape, is peaceful and serene. We lit a glowing candle at the front of the chapel, and thought for a bit about people we loved.
Then we went downstairs to the gift shop.
It was packed. We wandered around the aisles, primarily in separate directions, when I suddenly came upon a display that froze me in my tracks. As you can see in the picture, and believe me you had MANY choices in this matter, there was a special display with shelves with ornaments and figurines of Santa, kneeling reverently, at the birth of the baby Jesus.

Okay. I thought I was pretty clear regarding the personnel who attended the Nativity: Mary, Joseph, sweet baby Jesus, some livestock, various shepherds and a handful of wise men. Please correct me if I’ve forgotten anyone. Question is, when did Santa show up??

I won’t lie. I burst into muffled laughter – only muffled because I had my hands firmly clamped over my mouth. Then I quickly found my kid, who was looking up patron saints in a thick book on the counter. “Come over here,” I said. “ And get your phone out. You are not going to believe this!”

Gratefully, he had a reaction identical to mine and snapped copious shots with his camera phone. I believe they were on Facebook by that night.
I mean no disrespect. I’m just confused! If anyone can enlighten me as to when recent history has indicated the presence of Santa at Christ’s crèche, it’s news to me! If it’s symbolic, I just don’t get it.

This is not intended to be inflammatory – I simply will be fascinated with whatever explanations I receive. This ought to be good!

I have published this story in the past. In a discussion, my readers wondered if Santa, having maintained his friendship with Jesus, also made an appearance at the Last Supper. Whadaya know!
