My hands were cold, and beginning to go an unpleasant purple-blue. I was beginning to wonder if she was going to bother turning up, after all. Then, I saw a dark figure emerge from between the trees and falter for a moment.

"Is this the best you could do?", asked a smooth voice. At the moment, the figure's face was concealed. I had to make sure it was Serence, so I asked The Question.

"Am I really the duck?", I asked, fearing that the figure would give the wrong answer. Unfortunately for me, it did. Instead of "You must be the duck if I am to be the swan", came "What are you talking about? I must insist that you start acting, otherwise your blood will be seperated from your body within twenty seconds."

I recognised the voice, now that she used her own. Amber. Before she could say any more, I bolted. If we were faster than vampires, then my life would not be in so much danger. Unfortunately, we had all the speed of a human on land. In the air, however, we were amazingly fast. Much faster than those hideous vampires. My only problem; the vast canopy of trees above. I ran as fast as I could, wings trailing behind a little, to prevent them from crashing into any branches. I looked around frantically, trying to find a clearing. I found a patch almost immediately, the moonlight shining silver on the ground. I barely made it to the air, the vampire leaping up, trying to grab my legs and pull me down with her talon-tipped hands. She snarled at me, her mouth opening and giving me a wonderful view of her cracked and poisoned teeth. She fell to the ground with a thud. Amber was one of the six living vampires in the forest. I caught sight of another pair of wings, to my right. I flapped over, my wings soundless on this beautiful night. The wings belonged to my dear friend, Serence. She was the one I was meant to meet on this fateful night.
