Once upon a time,
perhaps in another life,
when we were only stardust...
In that nebula that was
to form our little world,
I was in love with you and
you were in love with me.
We knew nothing of society,
or gender, or relationships.
We were together, just two
wandering souls that connected,
no form and no speech
to impede love,
no previous baggage to carry
upon our metaphysical shoulders,
no images to uphold-
we were just stardust,
so simple and uncomplicated
And I think that I loved you
with all of my soul back then because
sometimes, when I look into your eyes,
something beautiful and rare shines there
and because I can still feel
love’s remnants rattling away in my bones
even though our lives brush
together in a strictly platonic way.
And perhaps that is why your
jokes are always reserved for me.
And why you always call me,
despite your feelings towards the phone.
When we meet and your eyes and your smile are
illuminated by a strange wonderful light,
I have to bite my lip not to kiss you.
And as this life is stranger than
any fiction I can dream up,
I never feel completely real
until I am with you.
I think I will always be in love
with the memory of that age old love,
because at our core, we are still stardust
