My Brothers Keeper

There were two boys named Bret and Bobby who were brothers. Bret was the younger of the two. While their parents were working it was Bobby's responsibility to care for Bret. Since Bret was the youngest you could say he got the most attention. Bobby was resentful of that. He felt he deserved as much attention as his brother. As they got older they drew further apart. While Bret stayed closer to home Bobby went his own way hanging with the wrong crowd. One day Bret was walking down the sidewalk and seen his brother on the corner with some other guys. He walked over and began to talk to him. "How's it going Bobby?" "What do you want?" "Nothing I just thought I'd stop by and say hello." "Well we're busy so you need to get lost" said Bobby. "What are you busy doing?" "It's none of your business now get lost." "Alright then I'll see you later I guess." Bret went on his way and as he looked back he saw the other guys laughing at him. Meanwhile Bobby said "he's always got to be up in my business." "Always got to be a goody goody." They talked for a few more minutes and Bobby said "well I guess I need to be heading home before tattle tale tells mom and dad he saw me hanging on the street corner." One of the guys asks "well we still on for tomorrow night?" Bobby said "well it depends on whether or not if I can sneak out without my brother noticing and ratting me out." Another boy says "well bring him with you." Bobby says "you must be crazy." The boy says "I'm serious; that way we can have a look out." Bobby said "he'll never go for anything like that." The boy said "he doesn't have to know what he's going to be doing; just tell him we're going to shoot some pool or going out to get something to eat or something." Bobby thought for a moment and said "not a bad idea."

Back at home Bret was in his bedroom laying on the bed listening to some cds. Bobby walks in and says "hey bro what's up?" Bret says "nothing much just listening to some music." Bobby asks "you busy tomorrow night?" Bret answers "what time tomorrow night?" Bobby says "does it matter what time are you busy or not?" Bret says well I was planning on going to church with mom and dad." Bobby says "I don't know why they think so highly of you!" "They think you're the only child they have!" Bret says "that's not true; they love you just the same." Bobby responds "no they don't; it's always Bret this Bret that." "It makes me sick to my stomach." Bret got a sad look on his face and looked down at the floor. A tear began to fall down his cheek and he said "I'm sorry you feel that way." Bobby said "yea well the truth hurts sometimes." He turned and walked out of Bret's room and slammed the door.

Bret sat on his bed and began confused and hurt. He thought to himself I never knew he felt that way. A few minutes later their dad called up the stairs "ok come and eat." Mom asks "well what did you two do today?" Bret answers nothing much just went to Tim's house and played a few video games and came home and listened to some music." She asked "how about you Bobby?" Bobby said "what does it matter?" "You never cared before; it's not like I'll ever be as good as Bret." Their dad speaks up and says "we don't expect you to be anything but yourself." "It's not a competition." Bobby mumbles to himself "yea right." Bret just lowers his head and wonders to himself why does he resent me so much. What did I ever do to him? Later that night Bret was thinking to himself maybe he feels this way because he asked me to do something with him tomorrow night and I said I was going to church with mom and dad instead. He walks to Bobby's room and knocks on the door. "Come in" Bobby answers. Bret walks and Bobby says "what do you want?" Bret says "I want to apologize." Bobby says "for what?" Bret said "I never knew you felt that way." Bobby said "well now you do." Bret said "well if you want I won't go to church tomorrow night with mom and dad so we can do something like you wanted." Bobby said "ok fine."

The next night Bret said "well what are we going to do?" Bobby said "it's a surprise I can't tell you." Bret said "well are we going?" Bobby said we have to wait till mom and dad are a sleep." Bret said "we're sneaking out?" Bobby said "yea for once quit being such a goody goody." Bret said "well alright." He thought if he was going to be able to hang out with his big brother for once he had to show him he had some guts. Around midnight they left the house and went downtown to meet the other guys. Bret said "what are doing?" Bobby said "we're going to a friend’s house to pick up a few things." Bret said "ok." They walked a few blocks and came to this big house. Bobby said "we got to go around the back of the house because he's going to let us in the back door." Bret said "alright." Bobby said "you wait right here and we'll be back in a few minutes and if you see any cars let us know because if they see us packing the things out they'll think we're robbing the place." They went around the house and they picked the lock to house. When they got inside they proceeded to steal what they could get their hands on. They took the stereo, DVDs, DVD player, and what ever else. About thirty minutes went by and they haven't come back yet. They had packed everything out and were hiding it in the bushes when Bret came around the back of house to see what was taking so long. They never saw Bret come around and he walked into the house looking around for them. He yelled for Bobby and got no answer so he went up the stairs and down the hallway. He got to one of the doors and all of a sudden a blast went off.

Bobby and the other boys jumped and turned around and looked at the house. Bobby yelled "oh no!" He ran for the house and one of the guys grabbed him and said "we have to get out of here!" Bobby said "I can't leave him there." They said we have to."They ran home and Bobby went to his bedroom and began to weep. A couple hours later there was a knock at the door. Their dad answered the door and a police officer stood there. The officer told him what had happened. His son had been shot and killed for breaking into a house. He cried out and his mom came running down the stairs. He told her and she hit her knees crying. Bobby came walking down the stairs and they asked if he knew anything about it and he responded "am I my brother’s keeper?"

A few days later Bobby and his friends were hanging on the corner again. They had decided to rob another house. Later that night they came upon the house and picked the lock. After they we're done robbing the house they came upon a car parked around the corner. They thought it would be easier to get the stuff back home. They loaded the car up and hot wired the car. They got home and unloaded the car and split the merchandise. The next day Bobby set up shop to see what he could get out of the stuff. A guy walks up and starts looking at everything. Bobby said "you see anything you like?" The guy just keeps looking. Bobby turns his head to look around to make sure there are no cops around. When he turns back around the guy has done pulled a gun and before Bobby could say anything the guy pulls the trigger and shoots him in the chest. Bobby falls to the ground and the guy steals all his stuff. As Bobby lay there bleeding he kept saying "I wish I were more like my brother Bret." "He never deserved to die like this." "Lord if you let me live I will change my ways." Meanwhile he heard sirens in the background. The ambulance arrived and loaded him and rushed him to the hospital. After six hours of surgery the doctor came out and spoke to the parents. The doctor said "we were able to remove the bullet and we got him stable." His parents asked "can we see him?" The doctor said only for a minute he's going to need his rest." His parents went in and walked up to him. His mom in tears asked "what happened baby?" Bobby said "I'm so sorry mom it's my fault Bret got shot." She said “what do you mean?" Bobby explained to her what happened. He told her what happened to him and how he felt like they loved Bret more than him. They said "we forgive you son." "We love you and are so glad we still have you with us and I'm sure Bret feels the same way." From that day on Bobby seen the error of his ways and turned his life around.
