VIRTUAL’S BOX CHALLENGE

I’ve been off Booksie for a really long time because of school but now that I’m graduating soon I want to get writing (and reading!) again. And what better way to re-acclimatize myself into the wonderful world of Booksie than hosting a new challenge?!

This contest is open to all Booksie writers (with the exception of erotica and fan fiction writers) and the genres are totally up to the writers as well.

The challenge is simple: pick a number from 1 to 7 and I’ll respond with an item from the box that you have chosen. There are only seven boxes and each has their own theme.  Participants are allowed to choose the same box number, although they won’t necessarily have the same prompts.

For example: the theme for Box 1 could be love, and your prompt (or material) could be Sonnet 130 by Shakespeare. Your piece would have to center around whatever emotions your prompt brings up. Not all prompts will be poems, this is just an example.

The writer gets points for figuring out the main theme of their box and using it in their writing.

The prompts MUST be used in the writer’s piece (I might mention this a few times but only because it is a crucial part of the competition!)

So now more rules:

Poems:

Must be at least 40 lines long (this is to make it fair for others who might be writing novels). Because of this, poems can be split into different parts or sections if the poet so chooses

 Must be a new poem

Must be tagged as vwpoem to make it easier for me to track down and read.

Novels:

Can be of any genre, as mentioned above.

Must be a new piece

Must be written by the author themselves, although co-authoring will not be looked down on.

Must be tagged as vwnovel (Short stories must be tagged as vwshortstory, etc).

Again, all entries MUST somehow mention, in one way or another, directly or indirectly, the prompts that they are given to write about.

Honky Tonk in Cleveland, Ohio

It's a jazz affair, drum crashes and cornet razzes.

The trombone pony neighs and the tuba jackass snorts.

The banjo tickles and titters too awful.

The chippies talk about the funnies in the papers.

The cartoonists weep in their beer.

Ship riveters talk with their feet To the feet of floozies under the tables.

A quartet of white hopes mourn with interspersed snickers:

"I got the blues. I got the blues. I got the blues."

And . . . as we said earlier:

The cartoonists weep in their beer.

“I was walking along a path with two friends – the sun was setting – suddenly the sky turned blood red – I paused, feeling exhausted, and leaned on the fence – there was blood and tongues of fire above the blue-black fjord and the city – my friends walked on, and I stood there trembling with anxiety – and I sensed an infinite scream passing through nature."
