A poem about losing the light

Sitting on top of the word,

Don’t look down or you’ll only see me falling...

Where’d you go?

It’s such a long way to the bottom

And it looked so far away,

But I was looking at it from over there,

Not where I am today.

How can I face tomorrow,

When I have shut  my eyes?

My shocking need for what could have been

And the last shot I truly missed.

There’s still blood on my hands though,

But whose is it?

Falling, endless calling.

The strange concept of no more.

Like trying to replace something,

that’s just irreplaceable.

So I’ll take my goddamned time

and maybe it will be less crushing.

Time has a funny way of making things

sadder than they need to be.

Suddenly there is no light anywhere where it should be.

There is no light and I scream,

But the only sound I hear is coming from me.

Let it go, let it go.

Don’t pretend it’s all you know.

Don’t you want the light upon your face.

Don’t retreat to the safer darker place.

What’s wrong with you?

Isn’t there something else that will let you breathe in again?

Can’t you close up that space that makes you suffocate?

In and out,

Just breathe.

No last goodbye,

Just words that you and I forgot.

Looking up, I see the altar

That you seemed to be upon

And I’m down here in the darkness

Until I learn to move on.
