Khennax was born, and Queen Helena died. Suddenly, the infant girl was the only heir to the Highmage of Tornian... the only heir to a position open only to the sons of the Highmage himself.
And so it was that, from the day of her birth, Khennax was known to her people as their Prince. She was hidden away from them, tucked up in the palace. They claimed that the Prince was poor of health, and exposure to the plagues of the city would bring him to his end. They saw Prince Khennax only from a distance, when he attended the speeches made to the people by Highmage Evander. They knew he lived, they knew he was beautiful, and they could tell that his father hated him. More than that, of Prince Khennax they did not know.
She lived like that for sixteen years; alone in the palace, her only friends the maids and servants of the court, who all knew the truth. She learned the magics and the politics of her people. She strove to please the father who hated her for the death of her mother. And, in a way, she was happy. For, indeed, she knew of no other life she could live.
But eventually, she would have to rule Tornian. On her eighteenth birthday, she would take over for her father as Highmage of Tornian.
And so, at sixteen years of age, it was announced to the public that Prince Khennax's health had finally become good enough for him to join them in the city.
Without any warning, Khennax found herself tossed into the city, under influence of a powerful illusion which turned her into the beautiful young man the people all thought she was.
As future Highmage of Tornian, Khennax must give up everything for the people. So what does she do when it interferes with the life in her heart?
