Elf: Into the Darkness.
Part 3, hope you enjoy. This part is a bit darker then the last ones. Again apologies for any mistakes or inconsistencies and please comment in my guestbook!!!

A T.V. set was on and was quietly talking. A news studio was framed in it’s image, they were reporting for ‘Focus Gotham’, a special programme only focusing on the city of Gotham. A suited man was sitting in a studio.
“…And we have Andrea Smith at the scene of this fascinating incident. Andrea, over to you.”
“Thank you David. Earlier today, The Flash came dashing into this ordinary hospital, transforming it into a media hotspot. He was carrying a young girl, apparently severely injured, but reports are sketchy. The doctors are all refusing to comment on the condition of the girl who they’re calling ‘Patient X’. Here was the scene just a few hours ago.”  The footage changes to the inside of the hospital with “Amateur Footage” in the bottom corner. The footage is grainy.
The Flash burst through the door, into the lobby of the hospital. A girl, clad all in green and masked was cradled in his arms.
“Uh, a little help here.” He said and was immediately surrounded by medical staff.
“No one can tell us who this mysterious girl is. She was wearing an unusual costume and speculation is that she is some kind of super hero. This has not been confirmed, however. There is also a rumour that she is a criminal, injured in a fight with the Flash himself. What the super-fast hero is doing so far from Star City, no one seems to know. The intrigue of this story was added to by the arrival of Millionaire, Bruce Wayne, just hours after the girl’s admission, with several mutant children. Wait a second… something appears to be happening…it seems to be… Yes, it is! Superman! A bit far from Metropolis! And who’s this? The Man-hunter from Mars….and… It’s Green Lantern. Do you know the girl? Is she a super hero?” The heroes enter the hospital without comment. “We shall keep you all posted on any further incidents. Back to you in the studio.”
The Flash stood from his chair in the small hospital room and turned the television off with a click. He had refused to leave the hospital, saying that Elf needed protection. The room was cramped and sterile. Freya was connected to a ventilator and a heart monitor. She was still unconscious. There was a drip on her left hand. Morphine was flowing into her blood-stream. Bruce was sitting in another chair, next to a second bed which was filled with mutant children. They were fast asleep, piled atop one another like puppies.
Superman, Green Lantern and The Martian Man-hunter entered the room. Flash gave a strained smile and walked over to them.
“How is she?” Superman asked. Bruce glanced at the children, checking they were still asleep, and then walked over to join the other heroes.
“Bad.” He said voice low to avoid waking his mutant charges. “There was some kind of poison on the blade. They don’t know what it is, or how to treat it.”
“The docs say it’s up to her now.” Flash added.
“She’s stronger than she looks.” Bruce told them. “More so than you’d think. She’ll beat this.”
“The problem is that she’s vulnerable to attack. Those things attacked the second that she was alone. One of us needs to be here constantly.” The Flash was adamant. It was obvious that he was feeling very parental towards the young girl. He had saved her life and now he felt responsible for that life. He needed to keep her safe.
“Wally, calm down. We’ll take care of her.” Superman replied.
“I’m going to be taking care of these kids. They’ve had it rough.” Bruce said. Glancing fondly at the sleeping children. He was a father at his heart.
“I can stay and take the first watch.” Green Lantern volunteered. There were murmurs and nods of agreement.
“What about her quest for allies?” John Jones asked. “Are we to be destroyed? If she can’t complete her mission then we’re…”
“Screwed. I have an idea about that…”

She was engulfed in darkness. Pain flared whenever she moved. There was nothing. Just blackness. Agony and the dark were her entire world. Shadow was all there was.
“Help!” she cried out piteously. Her voice died as it left her mouth, fading away to nothing almost instantly. The word was barely a croak. Each second seemed to last an eternity. She was aflame, burning with pain. She couldn’t move, couldn’t think. All there was, everything was darkness and suffering. The pain began to define her. Then, a glimmer of light. It was dimmer than a candle flame, but after so long in the dark it was blinding. She tried to close her eyes against it, but couldn’t bear to shut herself back in the darkness. It brought hope into her heart.  The light came slowly nearer, growing in intensity. Then, suddenly, it was right in front of her and a feeling of black malevolence oozing from it was oddly familiar.
That was it! It was The Void. How had she ended up here? She’d been hurt in Gotham… that light. It came from Him. The Evil in the dark. A creature of fire and molten earth. A walking lump of magma with amazing powers. The glow was his eyes. Suddenly, he grew to his full size, swelling and glowing as he stared at the helpless girl before him.
“You dared return!” he bellowed. “You mortal child. I could tear you asunder and scatter your atoms to the cosmic winds across countless universes. You, who dare defy me!”
“You need me. It is my power that frees you.” She whispered.
“You would free me only to bring down my destruction. Or attempt to. For I am all powerful and your pitiful abilities shall not affect me!” His voice became soft, coaxing. “I could end this suffering of yours. I could send you somewhere sweet where the meddling Web shall no longer force you to your doom.”
“I will face you. I will fight you.”
“Then I shall win and you shall die. I shall crush you like the insignificant bug you are. Even now, a toxin runs through your veins. You shall languish here in coma, your mind trapped, giving me strength each day ‘till I am free! You shall die, slowly and in pain. And the world shall be mine”
“NO! I… I’ll stop you! I have to!”
“My child, I am so much more than you. Can’t you understand that I can destroy you in a blink of my eyes? A click of my fingers and…” he clicked and instantly the pain was gone. They were in a beautiful garden, surrounded by flowers. Birds sang and crickets chirped. He looked down at himself and slowly shimmered and changed to become a handsome young man in his twenties. He was wearing a black tuxedo with red bow-tie and pocket square. Only his eyes remained the same, still glowing a malevolent red.
“I can make your last hours most pleasant. I can even reverse your death.” His voice was smooth and mellow like a good wine. Freya wondered at the strange plants and creatures. A 6- limbed cat-thing wound itself between her legs with a rumbling purr, its fluorescent pink fur ruffling. A pale gold butterfly alighted on her outstretched hand.
“It’s so beautiful. Where are we?”
“Nebulon 4. A small unpopulated planet in the far reaches of universe n14.” He smiled at her honest joy in all around her. She bent to sniff the flowers and suddenly she was wearing a flowing white and green gown. She stood and gave him a glare which he warded off by handing her a perfect red rose, conjured from nothing.
“All you have to do is surrender and you can stay here forever. No harm shall befall you. Or, if this planet isn’t to your taste you have galaxies to choose from. There’s a little beach planet I know….” He smiled and she was in a bikini. She frowned at him and he put her back in the gown with a shrug.
“It’s lovely, it really is. But I can’t just give up. I can’t just let you go without trying to stop you. My friends, my kids. Why do you want to end all this beauty? If you understand the loveliness of this place then why do you want it to end? You’ll destroy everything I care about.”
“YOU dare defy ME!” he roared, suddenly huge again. There was only darkness and pain. She cried out, the respite on Nebulon 4 had destroyed her defences. He invented new tortures just for her. She screamed into the darkness but no-one came for her. No-one rescued her.

The following evening at the hospital, Superman sat at her side, he held her hand as she moaned and tossed restlessly in her feverish slumber.
“How is she?” Flash asked as he entered the room.
“The same. Bruce took the kids home around lunchtime. He was afraid they’d get too upset. They kept trying to wake her. She’s all they have and they’re scared.”
“What do the docs say?”
“They don’t know what to do. They didn’t expect her to last the night though so this is a good sign. Your idea about the allies seems to be helping. I’m sure she’s getting stronger with each one.”
“Really?” Flash asked, perking up.
“It makes sense if you think about it. She can draw strength from her allies.”
“Good. I’ll take over, you go check on Metropolis.”
“Green Arrow has the morning shift. Actually, Oliver offered to take this night shift if you want to get some sleep…”
“No. I’m okay.” He sat by the girl and took her hand. “I can last the night.” Superman stood and walked out the door as the Flash sat down. Wally gently brushed her damp hair from her fevered brow and adjusted her mask to be more comfortable. She was pale and waves of heat rolled off her.
“Whatever nightmare she’s in must be terrible.” Flash muttered to himself.

She was sitting in a posh restaurant. Her captor was seated opposite her, again wearing the tux. He would torture her for hours, and then treat her to some exquisite delight. She was eating the 5 star food ravenously. The waiter had brought over an amazing chocolate creation without them ordering.
“Why are you doing this? I understand that you’d want to hurt me, I want to destroy you. But why are you treating me so nicely in between?”
“I can be kind just as easily as I can be cruel. I don’t want to see you suffer. Just say you will let me be. Poor mortal child. Do I not deserve freedom as much as any other?”
“Does a murderer deserve to be released from jail when he wants to kill again. You will destroy everything.”
“That is Web talking. Why should I destroy what I could control?”
“What?”
“It doesn’t make much sense for me to leave one empty waste to create another one, now, does it?”
“You’re serious?” She asked him incredulously.
“Of course. It would all still be there, just with a little change in management. There is chaos everywhere. I can bring order from the madness.”
“What about my kids? My friends?”
“I shall spare them. I can be both benevolent and wise. They and you can go to the pleasure planet of your choice and I shall never trouble you again.”
“I don’t believe you. You’ll enslave everyone! You’ll hurt them. How can I just run and hide like you’re suggesting when I know what you’re doing to all those other people?”
“Then you shall die and them along with you!” His eyes flared as his voice rose and suddenly back they went to the dimension of pain. He made her suffer beyond imagination. Then, in the darkness around her they appeared. Her children, crying silently. They surrounded her.
“NOOOOOOOO!!” she screamed in anguish. “Get out of here! Now! It’s not safe!”
“We don’t want you to hurt anymore.” Chameleon told her.
“Just stop. We don’t want you to die” Spirit added
“Surrender. Lie down. Give up. This way we can all be saved.” Leo told her.
“All this pain will go away. Don’t you love us?” Angel smiled sweetly.
“Don’t worry about us.” Hawk told her.
“Freya, please.” Lupa said. “Stop hurting yourself. Come home.” Elf lowered her head. Her kids were right. She didn’t have to. The world might be a better place with Him in control… she should go back. Her kids needed her….wait a second….Lupa said? Lupa?
“You’re not… YOU’RE NOT MY KIDS!” she screeched, defiant. “Go away! Get out of here!” They looked hurt for a second and then became determined as they approached her. A variety of torturous implements appeared in their hands.
“We don’t want to hurt you Freya.” Angel said in her sweet little voice.
“But you leave us no choice.” Leo added. She sobbed and sobbed, her heart breaking as they closed in on her.

Green Arrow had just arrived to take over the solemn vigil. Flash was holding her down as she cried out and thrashed.  He was trying to avoid the wound on her shoulder but it was taking his full body weight to stop her from falling from the bed or ripping the lines and machines from her.
“I’ll get a nurse.” Green Arrow said as he made a quick exit.
“Hurry, Oliv…Green Arrow!” Flash said, almost forgetting the need for secrecy. He held the girl securely but with care to avoid causing her further pain. “Hush, you’re okay, you’re alright. I’ve got you, you’re safe.” A nurse came running in followed by a doctor and the Oliver.
“How long has she been like this?” asked the Nurse.
“She’s been restless all night, muttering and moving but she went crazy about a minute ago. She just started screaming and thrashing.” Flash answered as he stepped away from the bed, obviously disconcerted.
“I’ll up her sedation and pain meds.” The Doctor said. He marked something on the chart and the fiddled with the devices Elf was attached to then left.
“That must have been some nightmare.” Oliver said staring down at the bedridden girl.
“Tell me about it.” Flash replied as the girl slowly relaxed back into her catatonic state. “You’re on till twelve, and then Superman will take over. Do not leave her side.”
“I know, I know. Are the others stopping by today?”
“Yeah, quite a few will be through here to pay their respects. Any you don’t know who can’t be vouched for, toss out. We aren’t’ taking any chances.”
“Understood.” Green Arrow resisted the urge to snap off a salute. The Flash wasn’t usually this intense. He came and sat in the chair by Elf’s bed and Flash headed to the door, stopping for one last look at the child he’d been protecting before dashing off to Star City. His city had been unprotected whilst he’d been caring for the child.

She was standing on a beach. The gentle wind ruffled her hair. It was a sunny day and the sand was warm under her feet. The sea lapped quietly against the shore. She looked down at the green and turquoise bikini she was in and grimaced. A white sarong appeared about her waist. She sat herself down on the soft white sand. A pair of sunglasses materialized in her hand as she blinked against the sun. She set them on her face with a grin.
Then, He was there.  He was running, Baywatch style, in slow motion down the beach towards her. His feet splashed in the foam. He was wearing red swimming shorts that showed off his sculptured muscles. He skidded to a halt before her, kicking up sand, it splashed upon her feet.
“Have you changed your mind, dear?” he asked.
“No. Never.”
“Why not? You could just relax here, drinking mai-tai’s with your friends whilst the children build sandcastles and paddle in the sea.” He smiled. “Just leave the approaching apocalypse to me.”
“No.”
“You’re getting weaker with every second that passes. You’re losing, sweetheart. Let me save you. You don’t have to suffer anymore. You could just…stop. I could give you a safe haven, love. A kind of… Noah’s Ark for yourself and those you love…” The children appeared again, playing in the sand in their bathing suits.
“You can’t break me this way, remember?” she smiled. Then the children stood and circled her, arms out-stretched, silently pleading. Storm clouds gathered overhead and the gentle spray from sea became huge, rolling waves. Rain began to fall as thunder crashed and lightening flashed.
“No.” she said determinedly, shivering in her bikini. He was suddenly sheltering himself below an umbrella and was wearing a long black coat over his tux from before. He raised his other hand and a knife appeared, glinting in the rain. “No, no!” she cried, her emotions blocking out the sane part of her brain, telling her that they couldn’t be here. She couldn’t move. She felt something holding her down, stopping her from going to their aid. He plunged his knife into Lupa. “NO!” the wolf-child fell in silence. Now he thrust his blade into Leo’s back. “NO!” Now Cam was falling, bleeding, dying. “NO!” Now Hawk’s blood stained the sand. “NO!” Now it was Spirit lying, torn, at Freya’s feet. “NO!” Angel, blood staining her white feathers as she fell. “No! NO! Please!” She was wailing like a banshee. “Stop it, stop it, stop it!” her voice fell to a defeated whisper. She saw their broken bodies littering the beach. The pools of blood. Freya curled herself into a ball against the cold and her sadness. She fell silent as she clutched he knees, but screamed inside her head.
“Why child, whatever is the matter?” Madame Web? No, it couldn’t be. “Child, child…” Not there, don’t answer. “Why child, you are very sick. You need to be strong. Do not surrender. All this? He used your own mind to create it. Your imagination brought it into being. Your mind can defeat it.”
“Madame Web? Is…is it really you?”
“Of course. I felt your pain and had to come. Don’t give up child. Fight back and you shall win.” Madame Web’s voice faded back into darkness. Elf went to her deepest reserves of power and found a surprising strength she didn’t know she possessed. Somehow, she was stronger, more powerful, than she ever had felt before. Her eyes snapped open and she stood. The rain ceased and the clouds faded parted. She looked down at her babies, dead on the ground and their bodies disappeared, their blood fading away. Her bikini became her green super-suit, complete with mask and cape.
“How…how did you-?” He faltered, backing away. Then He collected himself, brushing an imaginary speck of lint off his tux. “No matter. I had you once, I can have you again.”
“No. I am stronger than that and you have made me wary. My friends, my children, they are my strength. You could never understand. Light emerged, pure and white, engulfing them and Elf fell into a true, healing, slumber.

*****************************************************************

It was in the early hours of the morning that she awoke. Flash was again at her side, having taken the night shift.
“Easy, easy.” He said, pressing her back down onto the bed as she tried to sit up.
“my.. my kids!” she said, slurring her words slightly.
“They’re safe and well. Worried about you though.”
“How long?”
“3 full days and 4 nights.” He replied.
“How bad?” She asked.
“Flesh wounds mostly, but there was some kind of toxin in the shoulder blade. It was touch and go for a while, but you managed to fight it off in the end.” She sat up, avoiding his hands and swung her legs out to the side so they hung off the bed. “Where do you think you’re going?”
“I have to go. I’ve lost too much time already.” She felt odd wearing a pale blue hospital gown and her elaborate masquerade mask, but Flash had been right to insist the hospital staff leave it on.
“About that…”
“What?”
“There’s been a steady stream of heroes through here all week. The news reporters don’t know what to make of it!”
“And… and they all became allies?”
“Yep, all of them.” He smiled. She sank back into the bed, relaxing her head onto the pillows.
“Good, that gives me more time. Actually, it explains a lot. I was weak, ready to give in and then, this… strength flooded me. I wondered where it came from.”
“We’re just waiting on Hawkman, Black Canary, and The Question, and then you’re all stocked up.”
“When are they getting here?”
“This afternoon.”
“Okay. I’ll stay here today and tonight then. Early tomorrow morning, I will crossover from here, my Dad’s Continuum to my Mum’s Universe. I need to collect Allies from that side as well.”
“You are not going alone.” Flash was adamant on this point. “Those things attacked as soon as you were by yourself, and you’re in no condition to defend yourself.”
“I wasn’t planning on going alone. Actually, I was going to invite you along. Also Robin and Superman.”
“me?” Wally asked with a smile.
“Yeah, you’ll blend in nicely.” She replied.
“Superman is on the next watch so you can ask him then.”
“Watch?”
“Yeah, you were never alone. I made sure of it.” She blushed at his words. It had been a while since someone treated her like she mattered, like she was real.
“We can contact Robin via Batman. I’d better go and let the docs know you’re back in the land of the living, and then call Bruce. He’s been looking after the kids for you.”
“That’s very kind of him! It was generous of him just to get them into the school.”
“They needed someone to pay attention. Let him do that for today.”
“And tomorrow, we venture out, Across the Void.”

Will Freya and her friends make it from DC (dad’s continuum) to MU (Mum’s Universe)? What will happen in The Void? Will Freya’s outstanding arrest warrants in the MU cause problems? Will the evil finally be defeated? Tune in next time in Across the Void to find out!
