This article will not be appealing to most people since it reveals a flaw from deep within the self of many individuals. If you are sensitive please stop here.
Here it is… fast approaching is the 2012 Presidential Election in the United States of America. I am guessing that most voters have likely already made a decision as to who to vote for and for that I commend you. Some readers may not be able to vote for a number of reasons. I have heard it said on more than one occasion that “…if you don’t vote, you have no right to complain.” I haven’t decided whether or not I will vote is this election but I can assure you that I do have a right to complain regardless of my decision. Everyone in our country has a right to complain and this is good until people start to abuse the right!
I have been hearing a lot of complaining about the economy for the last several years. Even when the economy was supposedly good in the mid to late 90’s I heard complaining and actively participated in the sport. Things have gotten progressively worse since then…or have they? I often hear “Things are getting so bad.” What things are getting bad? Another of my least favorites is “I don’t know what we are going to do.” I don’t know either but I am going to do something.
It isn’t things that are getting bad; the problem is that people are getting lazy. How many times have you heard “I don’t know what I will do if I lose my job.”? To me that seems like a no-brainer…look for another damn job! Another common excuse is “I don’t know how to do anything else”. Another simple solution… LEARN! Is it really that complicated to pick up a book or to watch an instructional video? I think a lot of people have been waiting for President Obama to personally offer them a job of their choice for the last four years. Wake up! Personal responsibility, remember those two words. In every business there are people being hired every day. People are creating new jobs every day. Notice I said PEOPLE are doing this, all kinds of people. To expect one man to meet the financial needs of 300 million people is a bit silly, don’t you think? For one man to promise to do so is even sillier, but we have become accustomed to broken campaign promises. This isn’t a new trend and is a bi-partisan effort. The problem is when we believe that an election will make everything better.
What will make everything better? There isn’t any one thing that man, or woman, can do to magically fix everything and make everyone in the country smile all day and sleep soundly at night. This is an individual effort. If you care to be happy, surely you can put more effort into it. Sitting in front of the television watching a football game or some overly dramatic talk show while eating cheese puffs will likely give you momentary satisfaction but it is time that we look at long term satisfaction. Although I advocate living in the present, it is not all about today. If you want to do what feels good right now, be certain that you will feel just as good tomorrow. If watching television or playing some ridiculous video game all day makes you feel good right now then go for it… as long as it doesn’t take priority in your life. Take time to study, to learn something new. If you aren’t learning and are resistant to change, how are you different from those in the cemetery? I suggest finding something inspirational to read. “See you at the Top” by Zig Ziglar is a good place to start. Read something.
With all of this said, go out and vote in November if you choose to do so. Start looking for opportunities instead of problems. Everyone sees the problems but the productive people know that somewhere within that alleged problem is a great opportunity. Whoever you choose to vote for, please do not blame him for your failures this coming year unless you have at least twenty.
