In high school, my English teacher made me write a report on Poe's poem 'The Raven'. This is what I think of the project now, all these years later.

I once had an English teacher,
A ravin' maven, evil creature,
Sent to make life a living hell.
She picked on me, mercilessly,
Openly for all to see,
Like a fiery revival preacher,
On these matters I now do dwell.

Her assignment left me slavin'
Over Poe's poem 'The Raven'
Burning midnight oil by the ton.
Dragging on and on, ever so slow
It left me creepy, sleepy, weepy
With a head full of dreary dread
Of a tale of woe that was no fun.

My best guess is Poe was jokin'
Either that or he was smokin' -
Tokin' on mighty high grade grass.
Maybe, though, I could be mistaken
Perhaps he was just idly thinking
All the while that he was drinking -
Drinking from a highball glass.

It's well known that Poe was weird,
Perhaps more than most folks feared,
Talking to a crow above his door.
Although it was never outright said,
I presumed his Lenore was dead
The thought went through my head
When Poe's crow quoted "Nevermore".

Come the dawn, I was lousy, drowsy
Writing, typing, frantically revising
My final report was a load of gas.
With a full ten pages comprising
My effort obviously deserved a "B",
But all she gave me was a "C".
Well at least I passed the class.
