They say ignorance is bliss. They are correct. A little knowledge can have a devastating effect on a person's mental health.

Take my cell phone for instance. When I pick it up, it sometimes makes a pleasant, chirping noise, you know, enthusiastic like a puppy dog that's happy to see you. At other times, it it remains an inert, mute lump, kind of like a cat being aloof.

Now, you have to understand that I am a hermit. I enjoy very little social interaction. Thus, it is nice to get some attention every once in a while even if it comes from an electro-mechanical, flat-screen, digital, battery-powered, computer-driven, pocket-sized utility device.

This morning, I discovered that there is a tiny button on the side of the phone. I haven't a clue what it does. Pressing it seems to make absolutely no difference in the way the phone operates, but that is beside the point.

The important thing is that if I accidentally mash the button while picking up the phone, I get the happy, chirpy greeting. If not, I get nothing. Now, I am wandering around in a grey funk, a soul crushing depression, having learned that my cell phone doesn't love me after all.
