Her breath was quiet as she struggled to keep her eyes open.
"I'll be fine, I promise."
"Are you sure?"
"Of course I'm sure. If anything bad happened to me in there, you would help me."
Her eyes wandered before landing straight back onto mine, a deep breath escaping her dry lips.
"Okay, I love you."
"I love you too."
A weak laugh escaped her lips, breaking the everlasting silence.
When the door closed behind her, I let out a deep breath and went to hunt,
Ignoring my gut feeling telling me to kick the door open and take her away from them.
"You didn't help me." she said quietly, and my heart ached when she said those simple words.
"I know." I whispered, tears filling my eyes.
When I heard a scream, her scream, the whole world just seemed to freeze around me.
I realized that I needed to protect her, no matter what happened to me in the process.
"I shouldn't have gone in there, I shouldn't have let you leave me." she choked, and I shook my head.
"No, I should have known. I shouldn't have just..just left."
By the time I got there, it was too late.
"I was supposed to be your wife." she sobbed, hot tears rolling down her cheeks as I wiped them away with my thumb.
"And I was going to be your husband." I whispered, wiping my eyes.
Purple bruises, bleeding cuts and bite marks covered her fragile body.
I just couldn't bear to see her so weak.
"It wasn't supposed to end this way."
Her words, along with the realization that they were true, came crashing down on me like a pile of bricks as I stroked her cheek, her eyes slowly started to droop.
"I know..and I am so, so sorry." I told her, watching as her eyes started to close.
"I love you." she breathed, her eyes finally closing.
In that single moment, I knew that it was too late.
"I love you too."
