Surprise

By Cristina Mendes

I can feel the wind in my hair and the leaves blowing across my feet. I do not know why I'm here. I can’t imagine the reasoning that my mind made up to get me here. My heart is pumping so hard I can feel it in my feet. I tell my self that I'm going to leave, that in two seconds I'm going to turn around and never look back. My feet don’t move. They don’t even twitch. No matter how much my minds screams to run away before it’s too late they just stay there. Maybe I'm paralyzed. My finger twitches. Nope. Maybe I'm stuck. There must be something on the ground that is gluing y shoe to teh concrete under me. I can hear the voice in my head laughing at the insane reasoning that my mind has produced. I can’t go in now. Not knowing what I know, seeing what I've seen. Ill only ruin it. I can just run away, I can say I got stuck at school or was day dreaming while I walked here and got lost. I don’t even have to say anything; I don’t have to be here. I can walk away right now and never have to face the music currently behind the door. I know, however, that I'm wrong. If I don’t go in there I’ll always wonder what might have been, what could have been if I wasn’t such a coward. I could feel my body inching closer and closer to the doorknob. I slipped a key through the slot. I cant even remembering having pulled it out of my pocket. I opened the door to darkness. Suddenly, various voices screamed out into the room “SURPRISE!!!” as my friend’s pop out from behind various pieces of furniture. I smile genuinely. I hate that my friends can’t keep surprise parties a secret.
