A Reflection on Birds

the bird flew into the the window
where its reflection seemed to glare
the bird had first looked at the window
and flown by a few times to stare
but it finally flew at the window
it had finally taken the dare
and so boinked its head on the window
just as it flew into the flare
it had seen the colors and wings
other birds reflected there
so it boinked its head on the window
in the flash of the sun and the glare

because now is mating time season
time to find a mate, build a nest
find a bird to mother his infants
feed and raise and do all the rest
so when it sees an intruder
reflecting right back in its face
daring to challenge its rights
and flying around in its space
there simply is nothing else for it
nothing else it can possibly do
but to fly right at the window
let the intruder do what he’d do

and now it is sitting below all that
sitting knocked out in the grass
way far down below the window
with its sparkling reflecting glass
and soon there’s a tidy small person
staring down at the bird like a show
but its head hurts, it can’t fly away yet
so its stuck sitting here down below
the person had thought it would be dead
was startled to see its bright eye
was surprised when it then cocked its head
watched it make an attempt to fly

the bird thinks this won’t be the last time
cuz when other birds happen to show
smack-downs will occur in a minute
lots of birds fly at your window
if there’s nothing else you can count on
to be happening in early spring
birds fighting to protect home ground
is a pretty much sure fire thing
and unless you cover those windows
unless you cover reflecting glass
you’ll find a lot more boinked-headed birds
knocked out cold lying here in the grass
