Cats At Home
Fifty Grand Street, NYC 1958
Sweet Misty hides beneath the chair and plays cats-paw with tiger tummy Sam.
Max watches - a private academy cadet in public school.
A rear attack by Max, in play, but too rough.
Sam bellows, scurries off and then instantly returns to burrow his way back to Misty and their game of paw-tag.
Attacked again, small indignant Sam escapes up the chair arm.
But black Moose, cunt mother of Sam, watches from the arm rest and with calculated female bitchiness - her green eyes on handsome Max - lashes out with one black unsheathed paw at Sam.
Who bawls and barrels backwards off the chair arm.
Big Red rouses to look askance from the floor where he’d been compact muscle-tucked sleeping.
Misty has retreated.
Big Red re-settles.
Sam comes back.
And now stretches out to sleep on the back of the chair behind my head, in safety.
The dust settles.
The cats snooze.
I return to reading.
