Gravity Above All

Whenever outside in the world
Stand tall wherever you are
Brace your feel apart
Feel the beat of your heart
Breath deep and wide and far

You know Earth is moving
Turning, churning, around
Earth follows the sun
Goes round on the run
As we here are glued to the ground

Do you have any idea how far
We ride the Earth in its races?
If we matched all our smiles
One for each of Earth’s miles
We’d have HUGE smile-muscled faces

You’ve no idea of the mileage
Each year as Earth makes its way
We’re passengers all
Riding free on the ball
Hundred fifty plus thousand a day

We stand four-square in the open
Like nothing so much as toothpicks
Stuck in melon or cheese
Or those swish canapés
Each one of stands up and sticks

Earth goes 574,380,400 miles
And we’re along for the ride
We stick up in the air
Like some cartoon hair
Gravity ensuring our pride

We don’t fall down or go sailing
We don’t get swept off into space
We stay right where we are
Run, swim, ski, drive a car
As we take part in the human race

Do you think if space had its coppers
Who watched and ticketed folk?
Would they send each of us
Shots of us on Earth’s bus
And fine us for speed - as a joke?

Or maybe the stars look and snicker
As they see us on our mono-rail
Their sky lanes shift with reasons
Astronomical seasons
So they wonder, hey! y’think they have tails?

Or there could be life on the planets
Life on the stars as well
Life on a Milky Way farm
Or out on Orion’s arm
Wonder if their lives are swell?

Oh, we stick up away from the Earth
We just are what we are what we are
With no thought for grace
We’re the whole human race
As we ride on the top of this - star?

Is a planet a star? as well as a planet?
Or are those two separate things?
Do most Others know why
As They see us go by --
Or maybe just see us as strings

Part of a theory called String
That pulls all of us all together
Quantum, Relativity,
Theory and activity
Dark stars, black holes and weather

So here we go loop de loop
Riding our orb through the sky
Summer Fall Winter Spring
Ring a ling ring a ding
Standing up like hair in surprise
