Old Oaken Wedding Bed

Poem by: Wilbur

Summary

Ode to an old oaken wedding bed, its luster lost to all but the couple who slept in it from wedding night on - until forced by fate and fortune, health and happenings, to abandon it...in memory still alive in in all its glory.

 Old Oaken Wedding Bed

The old oaken wedding bed
Is no longer new
Its carved oaken headboard
Now tilted askew
Where once there were six
Just three pine bed-slats
Two plump goose down pillows
Gone to two goose down flats
Thick horsehair mattress
Just horsehair clumps
Four legs gone rocky
Each one of which thumps
Handmade bedspread
Has come all apart
Its glorious design
Now lost its red heart
The once wondrous quilt
Batt of hand-picked cotton bolls
Has lost all its lift
Filled instead now with holes
But for Carrie Louise Dickert
And her husband Will (nicknamed Dove)
That old oaken wedding bed
Still sings songs of love
