Just so everyone knows, this is a piece of writing for UnderxYourxSpell'sMusic and Magic Challengeas well as LupusAmator's Out of Your Comfort Zone Contest. The song I received is Diabolic Clockwork by Two Steps From Hell. Listen to it below :)

“Time continues on no matter what happens. It is alright to feel a little emotion, but too much might make you want to stop the passing of time altogether, and that is something that must never come to pass.”

Brynnia Ceas’s life is ruled by clocks. Her Great Line, the Ceas Line, is expected to be exactly like the enchanted clocks that never stop ticking – moving forward at all times, obedient and emotionless. Yet Bryn is unsatisfied with these rules and traditions and seeks something more from life – freedom, choice and the feeling of being alive. On the day of her coming of age, the princess learns of a plot against her Line that puts her whole family in danger. Surrounded by people she does not know if she can trust, she can only rely on two very different entities – her commoner friend, Gale, and the clock she keeps with her at all times, Elian. Time is running out and the race against the clocks to save everything she has ever known might bring Bryn to a truth she may not want to realize: that she is indeed a clock, even after everything she has done to fight against it.

Hayden Panettiere as Brynnia Ceas

Stellan Skarsgard as Robart Ceas,

Keeper and Protector of the Ceas Lands

Matt Dallas as Gerreth Ceas

Tom Sturridge as Rikkard Ceas

Nicholas Hoult as Kane Ceas

Tom Welling as Mycah Pavingum

Sean Farris as Cassius Aden

Pierre Boulanger as Galbraith Smithson

Michelle Rodriguez as Aesha

The stone is as smooth now as it was when she was six, the clock unchanged even after a decade. Yet, Bryn can feel that something is horribly wrong with the grandfather clock. She leans in closer, pressing her ear to the glass that shields the pendulum.

A feeling of dread beginning to rise within her, she moves to the next clock. This one is silent as well, pendulum hanging limply behind the glass. The third clock, the one from the dining hall, is still too, fire-breathing dragons frozen in place at exactly three o’clock. The clock from the library is motionless, the carved vines and flowers dull and lifeless where they seemed almost real before. The fifth and last clock is exactly the same as the first four.

It’s not possible, she tells herself, but the proof is right before her. Heart pounding, she closes her hand around Elian for reassurance. She gets none.

The little clock is deathly still too, wrought-iron hands paused at exactly three o’clock, just like all of the others. For the first time in forever, since Arlys discovered the first clock and maybe even before that, the enchanted clocks have stopped.

Bryn looks at each clock face in turn, dark spots dancing in front of her eyes as her breath shortens to painful gasps. The room seems to be closing in on her, the darkness around her getting thicker by the second as she struggles to keep some air going through her lungs. But, somehow, the air stings her lungs, so she tries breathing through her nose, inhaling with it the salt of the sea. Her already racing heart reaches a dangerous pace and the darkness comes closer and closer and –

A/N: Terribly sorry to keep you hanging, but I just had to :P The official release date of Diabolic Clockwork is JUNE 2ND, 2012. Stay tuned!

I'd appreciate everyone's support in this, especially tips on how to make my writing better. I really want to win this challenge and I'll take any help I can get! Lately I've been writing more romance-focused novels (The Bitten Wolf, Handsome & the Geek) and have been away from pretty much full force fantasy for a while. I also haven't written in 3rd person for a long time, so I'd appreciate everyone telling me if I slip up at times :) Once again thanks so much for your support (if you decide to read on, that is)!

Remember: release date is JUNE 2ND, 2012! Love you, fellow Booksians!

P.S. I'd rate this PG-13 for mild swearing, some gore, and possibly some mild sexuality. Just so you all know ;)

First... again :D This sounds... AMAZING!! :O I can't wait till June 2nd, but does it have to be so far away?! I love the pictures, and I have some competition... grr you!! :P Haha, I don't know if you know this, but I am in Spell's challenge too. KMU, though, I really can't wait for this, and I want to watch the other challengers ;)

Haha, you're like all my friends at school :P They keep begging me to let them read it, but I won't let them. You are?! I did not know actually, I hope you do well :) I'll be watching you too ;)

Sat, May 5th, 2012 9:52am

I look forward to the release date. If it's anything like Handsome and the Geek it'll be spectacular. And I totally get what you mean about the 3rd person (I don't think I've ever written in the 1st person ;)

Sat, May 5th, 2012 9:37pm

Handsome & the Geek was a lot more romance-based than this will be. This is much more fantasy with possible romantic twists, and I'm trying out a different writing style too :) Haven't done that in a LONG time, and 3rd person is like a foreign country to me :/

This sounds really good and already, i cannot imagine having to give you any kind of criticism. I really look forward to reading more of this! :) x

Sat, May 5th, 2012 10:14pm

Aww, thanks so much :) I'm sure you'll find something to criticize though! I'll update you as soon as I post the first chapter!

Hey, this is great news. I'll be hanging on waiting for the release. The plot has already gotten me really intrigued. Oh, and I'll have to listen to that sound clip as I'm reading the chapters it makes things that much more epic ;) Good luck in the contest.

Thanks so much :) I'm glad it's intriguing, the summary took me a while to come up with and finding the right excerpt wasn't easy... I totally agree, it makes it SOOO much more epic. I listen to it when I'm writing :P

Sat, May 5th, 2012 8:00pm

oh wow this sounds amazing i cant wait untill you start posting chapters. the idea itself is so unique and brilliant good luck with spells challenge:)

You have no idea how long I sat listening to the song and wondering what I should do with it :P Thanks!

When I saw the title of your new work, I knew at once that I just had to rush over. Cassandra Clare, you see, is my favourite author, and one of her works is entitled Clockwork Angel. Because of her, I've been more interested in clocks than how a normal sensible person would be.

So that is, if I may say, the reason why I was so intrigued by your title. But when I read the summary, my good impression on the title due to Clockwork Angel had been slightly shattered, and after reading the excerpt you've provided, that impression had been completely destroyed.

So what is my impression now? It's great, if not better, but now it's not because of the work my favourite author wrote. It's now because of what YOU wrote, and just how beautifully unusual the whole thing is.

I still don't have a full grasp as to what the clocks in your story really are, meaning I'm sort of confused, but I'm sure that's only because the first chapter hasn't come out yet (and won't be for a long time, if I may add!)

In terms of technicalities, despite my slight confusion, this story is golden.

I cannot wait for the first chapter to come out, and I'm positive it won't disappoint!

xoxo Myka

Oh gosh, for a second there I was worried that I did something wrong :/ But aww, thank you! I put so much time into this it's ridiculous... I know the release date is kind of far from now, but I want to finish Handsome & the Geek first and then have a couple of weeks to get ahead on this. Thanks for the wonderful comment!

P.S. Ever since starting to write this, I have become much too interested in clocks than anyone should be...

Wow. Oh my God, this sounds amazing! Please update me as soon as this comes out.
I've never read anything like this! Such an original, intriguing plot.
Wow, I'm excited. I feel like it's a movie that's about to come out.
Really intense. Most things I read are romance and can get pretty predictable pretty fast, but I can tell this will be much different!
You're really creative and a fantastic writer as well.

Haha! That's awesome that you're so excited. Romance novels do tend to get predictable fast, it's true. Aww, thanks :) I will!

I loved the little preview you put up. I've always had a mild obsession with clocks and their symbolisim (I actually have a pretty little pocket watch I almost always keep on my person) so I gotta say, I'm really excited for this. And I don't think you need to worry about being out of practice on your third person... :)
What I hate is that your official release date isn't for nearly another month (but don't rush yourself!).
Just a quick question on your third person--are you writing it as omniscient, or limited? I feel like whichever you choose/chose while have a huge impact on how you write the novel. Which isn't to say that I doubt your ability to do it, because frankly, you're kind of a genius. I guess what I mean is that I'm very curious to see how you're going to write this, almost as much as I'm excited to read this.

Mon, May 7th, 2012 3:02pm

I'm not going to even go into how obsessed with clocks I've become thanks to this... Oh no, I keep catching myself writing in first :( It's a limited point of view, meaning that the main character is the focal point for everything. I'm no genius, but thanks for the compliment :P The date is in a month because I want to get into it as far as I can before posting up the first chapter (for editing purposes). Thanks for leaving such a lovely comment :)

This sounds really interesting, be sure to keep me updated deary. =]

Of course I will :) Thanks for checking it out!

You know, I read this a while ago and completely forgot to comment. I blame it on gobsmackedness (is that even a word? It is now). I love how you've done this – it's so... professional. The summary captures the reader's interest. The excerpt is compelling, well written and, best of all, highly original. The covers you've designed are beautiful! And I'm delighted that you put the music on the page as well. I'd give this many, many Like Its if I could!

Though the excerpt was only short and the storyline isn't very clear yet, you managed to pull the reader into Bryn's world, show them how unique and intriguing it is, and entice them to read on, all in less than 300 words. That takes skill and huge heapings of imagination. I also really like the way you've incorporated the clocks from the music, and in a very original fashion to boot.

This is a most promising excerpt! June 2nd can't come fast enough for me! Bravo!

Sat, May 12th, 2012 5:43pm

I am totally using that word sometime soon! If I'm professional than you must be... I don't think there's a word to describe it. The covers aren't mine, but there's links below them to writers who did make them :) The summary definitely took me a while to write and I chose the excerpt meticulously. I'm glad it's intriguing - that's what excerpts are supposed to be :P The actual incorporation of the clocks took a while too, but it's good to see that readers think it's original. June 2nd just can't come fast enough :P Thanks so much for the lovely comment!

Cool! The character selection is really amazing. I'm a fan of some of the actors like ToM Welling, Hayden cos I like the part she played in the voice acting of Kingdom hearts. I'm yet to listen to the song though. The way you described everything, both the emotions and the way all the clocks stood still was eerily fantastic. I'd really love to read your book. You're doing pretty well with third person narration so don't lose confidence. With third person, the story is told from the perspective of the narrator and that's you so don't narrate from the perspective of a character. You could also combine third person with omniscient narration. Here, you make the thought, hidden emotions and views of every character known to your readers. But I've got a word of advice. When combining third person with omniscient narration, do not make very vital aspects of the story obvious to your readers until the time is right. This promotes suspense. I wish you luck! Go get 'em!

Mon, May 21st, 2012 2:00pm

You just confused me all the more with this third person stuff :P I'm combining third with omniscient, but I'm only making the thoughts and emotions of Bryn seen (as she is the main character). Thanks so much for checking it out :) I'll update you when I actually post the first chapter up!
