Just so everyone knows, this is a piece of writing for UnderxYourxSpell'sMusic and Magic Challengeas well as LupusAmator's Out of Your Comfort Zone Contest. The song I received is Diabolic Clockwork by Two Steps From Hell. Listen to it below :)
“Time continues on no matter what happens. It is alright to feel a little emotion, but too much might make you want to stop the passing of time altogether, and that is something that must never come to pass.”
Brynnia Ceas’s life is ruled by clocks. Her Great Line, the Ceas Line, is expected to be exactly like the enchanted clocks that never stop ticking – moving forward at all times, obedient and emotionless. Yet Bryn is unsatisfied with these rules and traditions and seeks something more from life – freedom, choice and the feeling of being alive. On the day of her coming of age, the princess learns of a plot against her Line that puts her whole family in danger. Surrounded by people she does not know if she can trust, she can only rely on two very different entities – her commoner friend, Gale, and the clock she keeps with her at all times, Elian. Time is running out and the race against the clocks to save everything she has ever known might bring Bryn to a truth she may not want to realize: that she is indeed a clock, even after everything she has done to fight against it.

A SHORT EXCERPT:
The stone is as smooth now as it was when she was six, the clock unchanged even after a decade. Yet, Bryn can feel that something is horribly wrong with the grandfather clock. She leans in closer, pressing her ear to the glass that shields the pendulum.
A feeling of dread beginning to rise within her, she moves to the next clock. This one is silent as well, pendulum hanging limply behind the glass. The third clock, the one from the dining hall, is still too, fire-breathing dragons frozen in place at exactly three o’clock. The clock from the library is motionless, the carved vines and flowers dull and lifeless where they seemed almost real before. The fifth and last clock is exactly the same as the first four.
It’s not possible, she tells herself, but the proof is right before her. Heart pounding, she closes her hand around Elian for reassurance. She gets none.
The little clock is deathly still too, wrought-iron hands paused at exactly three o’clock, just like all of the others. For the first time in forever, since Arlys discovered the first clock and maybe even before that, the enchanted clocks have stopped.
Bryn looks at each clock face in turn, dark spots dancing in front of her eyes as her breath shortens to painful gasps. The room seems to be closing in on her, the darkness around her getting thicker by the second as she struggles to keep some air going through her lungs. But, somehow, the air stings her lungs, so she tries breathing through her nose, inhaling with it the salt of the sea. Her already racing heart reaches a dangerous pace and the darkness comes closer and closer and –
A/N: Terribly sorry to keep you hanging, but I just had to :P The official release date of Diabolic Clockwork is JUNE 2ND, 2012. Stay tuned!
I'd appreciate everyone's support in this, especially tips on how to make my writing better. I really want to win this challenge and I'll take any help I can get! Lately I've been writing more romance-focused novels (The Bitten Wolf, Handsome & the Geek) and have been away from pretty much full force fantasy for a while. I also haven't written in 3rd person for a long time, so I'd appreciate everyone telling me if I slip up at times :) Once again thanks so much for your support (if you decide to read on, that is)!
Remember: release date is JUNE 2ND, 2012! Love you, fellow Booksians!
P.S. I'd rate this PG-13 for mild swearing, some gore, and possibly some mild sexuality. Just so you all know ;)
