This is a poem that I wrote for my mother. As an outsider looking in, I believe being a mother is one of the hardest jobs out there. Mothers often do not get the recognition that they deserve, which is why I would like to say thank you to not only my own mother, but also to all of the other mothers out there.

~~Thank You

23 years or 201,480 hours or 8,395 days
However you want to look at it, that’s how long you have been sacrificing for me your very own ways
You always made it a priority to give me the best life possible
Always telling me that nothing you set your mind to is too impossible
You were always encouraging me and motivating me to excel at everything I did
Which I have held sacred to my heart ever since I was a very young kid
It was not always easy for you, since you ended up a single mother
But that didn’t stop you one bit from raising both me and my brother
I like to think the job you did raising me is probably better than what most 2 parent homes can do
You showed me how to be a man, when there was no man to look up to
You taught me the value of respect, an attribute that is important to both a woman and a man
You taught me strong morals, to possess character and how to be resilient and to follow God’s plan
When my father failed as the spiritual leader you stepped right in
Making sure I was brought up knowing that God’s spirit was within
I cannot thank you enough for being a strong role model as a follower of Christ
Despite what you have been through, you never once have backed down without a fight
Your resilient nature is something to admire
No matter what life threw at you, you were always ready to praise God through the fire
This has helped me to know that God is always present no matter the situation
That if I’m going through a storm, I know I can always rest in his salvation
You also loved me unconditionally before I was even born
I hope you know that my lack of affection and “I love you’s” aren’t an indicator of how much I love you in return
I’m still in the process of healing from painful wounds and broken memories
Which is something that you have helped me with through various remedies
You listened and loved me through my deepest trials and darkest secrets
Which allowed me to feel comfortable when sharing my areas of weakness
All of these characteristics define who you are and have shaped me to become the young man that I am today
So some people may see you as a nanny, a grandmother or a dancer
But I like to see you as “Big Nance”
What started off as just a simple joke has evolved into something so true
With all of life’s struggles you simply grew
Into a wonderful mother, which is why it is my honor to say “Thank you”
