Chapter 11

“No, she did not die,” Anthony told the man.

“You were supposed to be aiming for the cop!” he was angry now. How could he now trust this man, knowing that he had almost killed his Anya? “I have no further use for you.”

“What about my money? You promised me 10 grand if I killed him off.” Anthony asked in a whiny voice.

“Ha! Like I would give you anything after this turned out? You get nothing.” The man growled.

“Not only did you not kill him, you managed to shoot the one person I told you not to. You will get what you deserve.” The man pulled out a gun from the waistband of his pants and pointed it at Anthony.

“Come on man! I’ll get him next time; just give me one more chance.”

The man pulled the trigger. The bullet went right through Anthony’s forehead, killing instantly. He fell to the ground in a heap. Not breathing. Not moving. Just dead. “I don’t work well with others.”

What was wrong with him? How could he be doing this? He was supposed to be keeping her safe, not kissing her. Zack prided himself on keeping things professional. He looked into her eyes after he pulled away; she looked ready to cry again.

Mistake? Most definitely. “Do you mind if I sleep for a little bit? I’m getting tired.” Anya asked.

“Um…sure, go ahead.” Zack got up from the chair he had been sitting on. “I’ll come and check on you later, ok?”

“Yeah.” Anya turned over so that her back was to him.

What was he going to do about that kiss? He should just ignore it and hope that is goes away. Zack walked to the elevator and pressed the ‘down’ arrow. He would go out and get some clothes for when Anya was released. But first he needed to check out who this Anthony guy was.

Taking out his phone, Zack called his partner at the station. On the second ring Danny, his partner picked up the phone. “D.C. police station, this is Danny.”

“Hey, Danny. It’s Zack. I gotta update for you,” Zack spoke into the phone. “Looks like someone else is looking into the shooting as well.”

“Well, shit man. I don’t know what to tell you. No other officer had been assigned the case but you.” Danny said.

“Ok. Call me if you hear anything.” After hanging up with Danny, Zack got on the elevator and waited for it to take him to the ground floor.

After stepping off, he headed for the door to call a cab. An hour later Zack had some clothes that he thought would be good for Anya to wear. Picking out clothes for her was kind of weird. He had never had the need to shop for women’s clothes. The sales lady wanted to know if he wanted to try them on! That had been an experience. Zack had picked out a nice light blue T-shirt and a pair of yoga pants only because he did not know what size she wore.

Thinking of Anya made him think about what had happened in the hospital room. It was a mistake. He knew it. And she knew it too. But it was not the type of mistake that he would later regret. Just the type that happened at the wrong place, at the wrong time. I should really go and check on her. It had been almost two hours since she had said that she wanted to sleep.

It was the same dream, she could tell. But there was a difference in the way it looked. The colors were all the same, as were the sounds. But something was off. The sky was blue but fuzzy. The flowers smelled wonderful, yet they looked off. Anya started to walk through the flowers. There was a slight breeze in the air. She closed her eyes and tilted her head up to get all the sun she could. This part of the dream was so real. She would not be able to tell it apart from reality.

“Anya you’re running out of time. What are you doing just standing around?” the voice was back, taunting her.

“What do you mean? Who are you? What do you want?” she shouted.

“Anya, darling, you can’t ask questions that you don’t know the answer to. I am you. Or at least a part of you.”

“What do you mean? How--?” She could not hear what the voice said. It must not have been very important.

After that, her dream was just a peaceful black void.

When Anya opened her eyes sometime later, she saw that it was dark out side. Looking to her left, she saw that Zack was sitting in the chair by her bed.

“Hi,” he said leaning forward to take her hand, “The doctor said that you can go home in the morning.”

“Good because the beds too lumpy, it’s cold in here and the food really sucks.” Anya said with a laugh.

“True.” He said with a smile. “I’m going to take you to my house if you don’t mind.”

Anya’s stomach did a flip. “Yeah that would be fine. I just need some clothes and other things. I don’t really want to go back to my apartment, but I guess I have to.”

“I bought you some clothes to wear out of the hospital, but if you don’t want to back to your apartment I could go for you. All you have to do is write a list of the things that you want.”

“Really? Thank you so much.” Anya moved over to give Zack a kiss on the cheek.

His eyes were so blue they distracted her. They looked like the sky on a clear day. She could get lost in his eyes. Wow I never really noticed his eyes. Before she could do something stupid like kiss him on the lips, she moved away.

“You have really beautiful eyes,” Anya said. Zack laughed at that. “I-well-I-I didn’t mean it like that. I just meant that they were really blue.”

“I got them from my mom, she had blue eyes as well.” He got up and walked over to the window.

She really wished that he would come and sit on the bed with her. She really liked it when he held her. She wanted to know more about him. She had told him a lot about her family but she did not know much about him and his family.

“Where did you grow up?” Anya figured that she could play 20 questions and see where that got her.

“Hope, Nebraska.”

“I had a dog when I was growing up. A beagle, his name was Pup.” Zack said with a laugh.

“Pup? You couldn’t come up with a better name?”

“I was three and I couldn’t say dog.”

“How about a girlfriend?” Anya wanted to know if she would have to compete with anyone.

“Oh, I see what you are doing. Those questions were just the warm up. You want to know all about me and my past loves. Well, you are never going to find out.” Zack turned around and looked at her.

Smiling instantly, Anya looked up at him and said. “I have no idea what you are talking about. I just want to get to know you better.”

Zack's face got serious as he said “Anya, about the kiss. It was a mistake. Really. It never should have happened. I’m sorry.”

Right, like I would believe that, I’ll have you kissing me again in no time, just you wait! Anya was gong to kiss him again, she just knew it. There just had to be the right time and place.

“Anya, don’t look at me like that. It makes me want to kiss you.” Zack said with a groan.

“Well, too bad because this,” she pointed to her mouth, “is here to stay.”
