When I walked into class that day, I had no idea what I was getting into. I sat down on the riser and waited for someone of my friends to come in. Eventually, Andy and Daniel showed up. Daniel sat down one riser up next to me, and Andy sat in his usual spot. So, somehow me and Daniel started a conversation about suicide.

“No. If you really wanted to kill yourself, you’ve got to take about a handful of extra strength Tylenol. You can’t live through that.” He said with finality. I looked at him questioningly, then looked up at Andy and suddenly remembered.

It was last year, and I was sitting in the library with him, hanging out. I was really weirded out by his lack of eyebrows, but that’s not the point. He was telling me about the time he attempted suicide.

“I took a handful of Tylenol and just swallowed it… and I lived. I didn’t have to get my stomach pumped or anything. I just lived. I guess God was telling me it wasn’t my time yet.”

So I looked Andy square in the eye that day in choir and said, “I don’t think that’s so. But anyway, I think that overdose is just a call for help. It’s wanting to get caught. And thankfully, sometimes, that person is. By who though, we never know.”

I think I made a difference that day. I really hope so. That guy has so much to live for. And he doesn’t even know it.
