On a day off—
—a workday off—
slept until near noon,
and then woke
from groggy, fuzzy midday dreams
planning. Planning to resolve
all of those problems with the time I had.

The problems I’d take care of soon.

But the afternoon grew dark and long
and I did nothing, nothing but
make a promise to myself. I promised
that after I’d eaten dinner, then there
would be the time for resolution.

Two hamburgers I fried up in a skillet
in grease with onions and cheese,
remembering while I stood in front of the oven
how a drunk woman I once met in a bar
had told me, “You should eat foods with lots
of protein if you feel depressed.”

Foods like hamburgers in grease
fried with onions and cheese
I would guess.

After that, it was dark and cold outside
and my Autumn day off was all but over,
but I promised myself that I would take care
of my problems—tomorrow—after work,
when I had the time.

Then I sat up in bed, fully dressed,
with the light on and I wondered
how protein could, or even if it did,
make a person’s mind feel any better.

Then I waited to see
if any of this were true at all.
