Come Home
My childhood was safe; full of broken lullabies
You held me safe through the drunken alibis
One piece of human soul and art at a time,
Oh how lives can turn on the spin of a dime
War took you to a desert so far away
You came home full of melancholy and decay.
Never speaking unless you were howling in the dreams
I’m used to the whimpering but those screams…
They make me shudder, shiver inside
as I scoop you up hold you close and keep the horror to the bedside.
I love you so much my heart wants to burst
but what I can do? I can never get there first.
Never bleed never die, never leave me here again
I know it can’t happen
This fantasy world of mine
where no one ever dies and the sun with always shine
Whittle away at me, piece by piece.
I’m not going anywhere I’m not giving up my lease
I want to scream and rage and hold you here
Hold you to me, keep you close and near
but you have to go you are duty bound
but theirs so much more to keep you around
You’d better come back to me or I will come and get you myself
I will not let that flag and picture become another one on the dusty shelf
You held me close and I did the same
I don’t care how I don’t care about right or wrong or pride or shame
Just come home.
