I lived on an Island

I lived on an Island, but it was not your typical Island residence. My home was on an Island in the middle of San Francisco Bay. On my Island was a Prison known as Alcatraz that housed some of the most dangerous gangsters of the era, including Al Capone. I took a boat to the mainland for School but my home was on the Island with the convicts. My father was a guard on Alcatraz and I spent 5 years there. I never saw a prisoner properly and had no wish to do so. The sad thing was that from the Island you could see how beautiful the area around San francisco was and yet if you were a prisoner you had no hope of getting there. My father told me that the currents in the Bay could drown a man, that was if he didn't freeze to death in the cold waters. Some men tried to escape, but they were always re captured or simply presumed dead and never seen again. I now live on the mainland and value my freedom when I look across at the cold grey rock that is Alcatraz. Many men lived and died there without ever getting off the Island. I'll never forget that I Lived on an Island.
