She spins and spins and laughs and laughs and all the while... the rain falls.

Pitter, patter, drip, drop, splish, splash. One drop, now two, three, four, five, a hundred. The trees glimmer, the grass bends, the stone darkens, the rivers rise, the creatures scurry, the people hide; the birds still fly. Gray fluff blurs the sky, deepened blue peers forlornly through the cracks; yellow shines behind the clouds, hidden to the eye.

Bare feet slap upon soggy rock, a child’s toes flipping up puddles. The long cloak of red twirls and she grips the hem of her dress with excited fingers. Long hair, dark and brown, whips in the wet wind and she squeals in joy, giggling her happiness to the pouring heavens. Chocolate eyes glow and she snaps them shut tight against the drops that fly down to her skin and slide off to join the rest on the ground below.

One foot first and then the other; she spins and spins and spins and spins with her arms held out to hug the crying skies. She laughs and laughs and laughs and then begins to cry, but her smile never falters. The world spins and dips around her in a disjointed puzzle of colors and she falls back with an eager shout into a pool of mud. Earthy brown stains the vivid red of her dress, but the girl only grins ever wider at the sky.

The sun strains through the clouds to look upon the laughing girl and the rain slows its endless beat. Mist falls and sunlight shines; an arc of colors pierces the air above.

The girl laughs once more.

And the world comes out to play…

To join her in the pool of cool mud, dizzy in the rain.
