He sleeps lazily on the floor
taking his time 'cause it's all he's got
His wound tail droops wearily now
afraid of what he cannot see

An old dog whose eyes are white
once two friends, now betrayed
I wonder if he remembers my face
when he hears me call his name

His breathing is labored and heavy
as if it's a chore to keep on going
I can see the depression on his face
wondering if he tries to hide it

He walks slowly over to my feet
staring in my general direction
Only blackness he really sees
the shadows of an old life
