NO MUSE

Pen hovering in the air
held a few centimeters from the paper
or whatever blank surface snatched to write upon.
I wait for words that aren’t there
so I doodle and then some
name appears in the midst of scratches, loops and hearts.
The name of my muse
who in this case is the character my mind
has created and fashioned then let loose
but by now has refused
to show himself.
I struggle to find the letters, words, phrases
anything that may fill up this space
whose blankness is starting to creep me out.
I doodle some more, out come faces
eyes, nose, mouth.
Then in my mind pops a witty retort
almost as if my muse himself
is saying it.
The phrase isn’t the sort
of thing I can add to my paper
and feel as if I’d at least accomplished something, however small.
Maybe typing on the PC
is faster and will help stimulate
my mushy brain.
Fingers come down on keys and it
seems so easy
to fill up the screen
with words pouring forth
faster and faster.
My muse laughs
and I stop
it is finished, done.
I reread the written piece,
which is right before
your very eyes.
