Ringing pierces through my head, passing from one ear to the other. It muddles my thoughts. For a moment I think I've lost it; the sense of hearing. That's when the whisper begins. It tickles at my brain making its presence known. It grows louder and louder by the second, building into a roaring scream that can't be ignored. The agony behind the voice vibrates through my body. I try to go to it, to find the person its coming from, but I can't. My body is heavy, working against every move I try to make. My mind begins to race, "What is happening? Where am I? What is going on?"
For the first time it occurs to me that my eyes are closed. I slowly begin to open them and they're immediatly assaulted. The light is blinding; bright and unforgiving. I blink it away. Shadows begin to replace the light, then colors start to seep in. Objects solidify, and the world around me comes into focus and I take it all in. I'm in a car, at least what used to be considered one. Now it just appears to be a scrap of metal enclosing me.
All of a sudden my senses heighten and a firey stench fills my nostrils. I can't tell if its coming from within my cage or far off but I am not going to wait to find out. I reach to undo the seat belt and find that is has been jammed. Panic begins to build within me. My breathing quickens and all sense of reason rushes out of me. I will myself to calm down, for the shaking to stop, for my breathing to find its pattern again. The instinct kicks in, the will to survive. "There will be time to panic later, now its time to get out of this mess".
I survey the scene around me looking for anything of use. Light flickers out of the corner of my eye drawing me to it, a shard of broken window. Joy begins to fill me for the first time and I breath out a sigh of relief. As I saw away at my restraint the weight is lifting off my chest. Finally I hear the last tear of fabric and my body is free. I open the door and fall out of the car, my minds will to escape overcoming my bodys actions.
I rise to my feet and take it all in; the smoke, the glass shattered all around. I find the source of the screaming I heard earlier, a women no older than fourty five, obviously in shock over the whole situation. I explore the area further and trip over something strewn across the ground; a sign. As i examine it closer it all comes back to me. I saw that sign right before. I looked at the sign and blinked my eyes and in that blink of an eye the world came crashing down.
