New Zealand born, but Australian based singer songwriter Mckenzie Comer rose to success after posting videos of herself doing covers onto YouTube. After entering a singing competition in January 2011, where she covered a song by Jasmine Villegas; who plays the lead female role in Justin Bieber’s “Baby” music video, Mckenzie was discovered by American management company Stokes Tunes.

Mckenzie was inspired to sing and write songs by international sensation Cody Simpson. “He sat next to me in class and would always sing some of his own songs, and that really made me want to do the same.” Performing for the patients at Radio Lollipop was something Mckenzie did regularly. For a few times, she had invited Cody to perform with her. One day Cody was contacted by Shawn Campbell; the manager of Atlantic Records, and the Simpson family was flown to L.A. This led to Mckenzie writing a song for Cody called “The Last Goodbye”. “That song came to me in about ten minutes and while I was writing it on my piano, I was crying as I played it and got it out. It was a really special song and was very emotional for not just me, but for everybody who was affected by it.” It has gotten over 90,000 views on YouTube.

Ignoring the fact that she hadn’t been signed to a record label at the time, she released her second single “He’s Just A Boy”, which has reached almost 120,000 YouTube views. She kept persisting by posting more and more covers onto YouTube. “Music is my life. If I couldn’t sing, I’d definitely choose a career in the same industry.” Despite having people bring her down, she just kept singing. “Dream, believe, achieve. Never think that your dreams are far from reach. You can achieve anything if you put your mind to it.”

Mckenzie Comer was touring in Australia and America in June and July. She was also be on the Camplified tour, performing at various camps in America. Using social networking sites such as Twitter, Facebook and YouTube, Mckenzie and her mum have been promoting all her upcoming shows. Currently, she has had over 775,000 YouTube views. Over the past year, Mckenzie has gained a huge fan base, who are known as “Kenzettes”. “In my EP, released later this year, there are a few songs that are really close to my heart.” Mckenzie Comer’s album next year.
