In the summer sun,
I quench my skin in the careless river
So dark and soothing
My unsuspecting killer

It swats at my ankles
It trips and pulls
Deeper I go
Until I can’t see the daylight

The swirls tie me
Unknowing which way is “up”
I paw at the water,
Hoping for an escape

My lungs burst
My eyes dilute
I lay, bloated and fading
Fingertips reach the relentless bottom

The river tears at my clothes
The rocky bottom proving merciless
Sharp, jagged edges
Ripping at my fragile flesh

There I drift
Until the police find my motionless body
Unbreathing, unbeating
This was my end

I leave this world
And dive into another-
Completely new
One that is entirely mine.
