In the summer sun,
I quench my skin in the careless river
So dark and soothing
My unsuspecting killer
 
It swats at my ankles
It trips and pulls
Deeper I go
Until I can’t see the daylight
 
The swirls tie me
Unknowing which way is “up”
I paw at the water,
Hoping for an escape
 
My lungs burst
My eyes dilute
I lay, bloated and fading
Fingertips reach the relentless bottom
 
The river tears at my clothes
The rocky bottom proving merciless
Sharp, jagged edges
Ripping at my fragile flesh
 
There I drift
Until the police find my motionless body
Unbreathing, unbeating
This was my end
 
I leave this world
And dive into another-
Completely new
One that is entirely mine.
