Brett had decided to do something upon seeing the blade. He'd rushed out and knocked the man aside, blinded to his own safety. Luckily, the man had had little time to react. Brett had been able to grab the knife, and had jabbed it into the man's thigh. It'd warned the man off. Brett supposed the man wasn't too keen on being caught. Now there was the situation of the boy. Brett stumbled over to him. He hadn't the slightest idea of what to do or how to help. There was blood everywhere. On the trees, the grass, and of course on the boy. Frankly, Brett wasn't even sure if he was alive. Brett reached out hesitantly and touched Rowan's chest. He breathed a small sigh of relief when he detected a heartbeat.
Brett frowned and bit his lip. After a moment's thought, he pulled out his phone. No service. Of course. He reached under the boy and picked him up with a grunt. His house wasn't very far, and the couple in the house next to him were both in the medical field; an EMT and a nurse. He made his way as fast as he could through the woods, somehow managing not to trip. As he made his way onto the sidewalk, Brett made sure to check for any company. But it was late, and no one seemed to be out. Brett backed into his house, still carrying Rowan. He was panting now, and he let Rowan down on the couch. Quickly, Brett made his way to the bathroom. He grabbed a towel and brought it back, putting pressure to Rowan's torso where the blood seemed to be coming from.
Brett's neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. Ambrose, had only just left. Brett didn't know what time it was, but he was exhausted. Still, he didn't dare close his eyes, even though the injured boy was said to be in stable condition. Mrs. Ambrose had stitched the worst of the wounds, and done what she could for the broken bones. She'd said to contact a hospital in the morning if Rowan was awake to explain what he could.
At some point, Brett must've dozed off though, for he awoke to daylight. He remembered the previous night instantly, and sat bolt upright. He stared at the boy until he was sure he was breathing. Brett flicked his pale brown hair from his eyes and sighed. He blinked as he saw Rowan's eyes fluttered open slightly.
"You awake?" Brett asked quietly.
Rowan's gaze came to focus on Brett. His first feeling was panic. Who was this? What'd happ to his attacker? Where was he? He struggled to sit up, but pain shot like a bullet in his lower abdomen, and he let out a choked cry.
"What do you want with me?" Rowan gasped.
He saw the confusion on the other boy's face.
"I was trying to help you... Don't sit up, you'll just hurt yourself more," the boy answered.
Rowan closed his eyes again. If he was safe, that was all that mattered. To be continued...
