Shane’s House

“What’s the answer to number five?” I asked, annoyed. Mr. Murphy had given the whole maths class an extra page because we were 'talking'. Teachers!

“Erin, you know you’re supposed to be doing this on your own,” my best friend, Shane, laughed.

I raised my eyebrow.

“Me doing maths on my own? Oh, you’re a funny dude,” I laughed.

He chuckled.

“It’s eight,” he said, and closed his book.

He's finished already? I'm only on the 5th question and there're twenty-five questions.

“Where did you get that from?” I asked, writing down the answer. He laughed, walked over and explained it.

“You’re not even listening to me are you?” he asked, exasperated.

“I am, I am,” I assured him.

He nodded and continued.

Boy, did he have those eyes you never wanted to look away from. Those glass green looking eyes with his spiked up black hair. By God, is he hot.

Yes, you’re all wondering why I'm talking about my best friend like that.

I do love him... more than a friend... sometimes... no, all the time... I think.

Gosh I'm confused. He's just amazing. He's perfect.

He was always there when I needed him, like when my boyfriends broke my heart and when my girlfriends betrayed me, and he is still here for me now.

Everyone likes him and thinks he's hot... so why can't I think that?

“Why are you looking at me like that?” Shane asked.

"Err," I paused, "you had something on your face."

“And you just stared at it?” he said, rubbing his huge hand over his hot face.

I nodded, biting my lip, looking at those kissable lips.

“What? Is there something on my lips too?” he asked, licking them.

I blushed and got up.

“Hey were you going?” he said, taking my hand and pulling me back down onto the sofa.

I shook my head.

“Are you okay?” he asked, concerned.

Stop doing this too me, boy. My heart was beating really fast. I nodded and turned on the TV to take my mind off the boy I call my best friend sitting beside me.

At School.

“Erin,” Shane shouted across the hallway.

I turned away from my locker to look at him.

“Yeah?” I asked.

“Did you see the posters around here?” he replied.

“Why?” I said, laughing.

“The summer dance is coming up.”

I nodded, smiling. There was only one guy that I wanted to go with.

“Okay,” I said.

“I was wondering...” he started.

“Yes?” I said, too quickly, hoping he would ask me to be his date.

He laughed.

“I was hoping to ask Laura James to be my date. What do you think?” he said.

My heart just stopped. Laura? Of all people to ask, he picks my best friend.

“Yeah, sure, I heard she really likes you,” I lied.

“Serious? ’Cause I really like her,” he smiled.

I felt my heart starting to rip in half. I nodded, a fake smile on my face.

“Thank you; you’re just a great friend. I love you,” he smiled, kissing me on the cheek and walking off.

“I love you too,” I whispered, shutting my locker door.

At Lunch

I was sitting beside Jared, another friend of mine. He was telling me about his dog.

“So when I went to pick up my dog at the groomers, I found out they shaved him instead of cutting his nails,” he laughed.

I laughed too.

“What did your mom do?” I asked, taking a bite of my sandwich.

“She went crazy, I swear, I've never seen her so mad and when she looks at the dog she shakes her head.”

“Well, your dog needed a cut,” I grinned.

“That's what I said,” he laughed once again. “Did you hear Shane asked Laura to the dance,” he asked, looking at me.

I nodded. He was the only one that knew I liked him... a lot.

“What did she say?” I asked tentatively.

“She said yeah.”

I looked away and let out a breath.

“I think I'll skip study and go home,” I said, grabbing my bag and walking out the canteen doors.

I was walking towards my car when I heard Shane shout over to me, “Hey, Erin, where are you going?” He walked over to my car.

“Home,” I spat.

“Hey, what got into your trousers?” he laughed.

I didn't even bother to answer that.

“I asked Laura to the dance and...” he started, but I finished it.

“…and she said yes. That’s all I've heard today,” I said and opened the door. Shane took my hand off its handle and closed the door, not letting me get into the vehicle.

“Tell me what’s wrong,” he said, leaning against the car.

“Nothing.”

“Erin, we've been best friends for eight years, I know when something’s up,” he said, getting closer to me.

“Like I said - nothing. Now move.”

“No,” he said.

“Yes.”

“Not until you tell me.”

I rolled my eyes.

“It doesn't matter,” I lied, trying to push him out of the way.

“So there is something.”

“What... no,” I said, slumping to the ground.

Shane sat down beside me and put his arm around my shoulder. I shrugged it off.

“Now there is something up ’cause you like it when I cuddle you,” he said.

“Yeah, well, not anymore.”

He looked at me, confused. “What did I do?” he asked.

“What didn't you do?”

“What?” he said, super confused now.

I shook my head.

“No, Erin, tell me right now what I've done ’cause I have no clue.”

I should just come out and say it, right? It’s the perfect time, sitting on the ground beside my car, annoyed. Yup, it sounds like a perfect time.

“I like you,” I mumbled.

“What?” he asked.

“I like you, okay? I like you way more than I like it. You’re funny, cute, always there for me and you tell me too much information for my taste, but I like that about you. When you told me you were asking Laura to the dance that hurt me ’cause I was hoping I could go with you, but no, you asked Laura and she said yes, so enjoy your time at the dance ’cause I'm not going,” I spat, standing up and waiting for him to move so I could open the door.

He just sat there.

“Move,” I said.

He sat with his head in his hands. Minutes past and he stood up and looked at me.

“Please, Shane, move,” I begged. He placed his hand over mine, which was on the door handle.

“Erin, you know I love you and you’re the bestest friend I’ve ever had,” he said.

I nodded. There he goes with those three words ' I love you.'

“But,” he began.

Not the but.

“I don't like you in that way. Of course, you’re a beautiful girl, and never believe people who say you aren’t, but I only like us as friends, not girlfriend-boyfriend,” he said, rubbing his fingers over my hand. “I'm really sorry,” he said, tears nearly springing from his eyes.

I move his hand away from the door and got in, then started the car. I rolled down the window and looked at Shane.

“I guess I was the only one in love,” I whispered, tears sliding down my cheeks.
