Marriage: the formal union of a man and woman, typically recognized by law, by which they become husband and wife. By definition, gay marriage is an impossible idea. But by modern standards, however, it can be done, and some do accomplish it.
As of today, gay marriage is illegal in 44 of 50 states in America. Nearly 70% of people in the U.S. oppose gay marriage – almost the same as the proportion as are otherwise supportive of gay rights. The six states that allow gay marriage are, in order of date of amendment: Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont, New Hampshire, and New York; D.C. also allows it.
An interesting reason that I find that puts people against gay marriage is that same-sex couples are not an “appropriate environment” to raise children in. I find this so interesting because of the people that society does allow to marry and to raise children: murderers, convicted felons of all sorts, and even child molesters. So, if the children are the main priority, why are the above not prohibited from raising them?
Another one is that marriage is for the continuation of the species. If that was true, then infertile people would never be allowed to marry. For instance, five married U.S. presidents did not have children with their wives; one of them was George Washington.I like to think that if the ten percent of the population that was gay refrained from procreating, the world would be better off. One of our biggest problems in this world today is over-population. Besides that, in the U.S., 100,000 children are waiting to be adopted. It’s always easier to adopt a child when you’re married, not to mention the financial support for the children. A longitudinal study published in Pediatrics on June 7, 2010 found that children of lesbian mothers were rated higher than children of heterosexual parents in academic and social competence. A July 2010 study found that children of gay fathers were “as well-adjusted as those adopted by heterosexual parents.”
Denying homosexuals the right of marriage is a violation of religious freedom, and a form of minority discrimination. Marriage benefits should be available to all couples. It affects things in society such tax filing status, joint ownership of property, insurance benefits, and medical crisis, along with 1, 045 other legal rights that are available to legally married couples.
