The obscurity of our lives,

those opaque curtains

behind which we hide like Hamlet

sometimes in paranoid disguises

and/or as hypocritical highbrows

in top hats, spats with cane in hand

extends  as far away as

our neighbor's doorstep

or China in a crystal goblet

held high toasting death,

an acknowledgment of the unfulfilled promise

of a new moon's silhouette,

the tempting smell of aged cheese in a trap

to a rat

on death row.
