The room was white. Completely void of darkness. The white lights danced all around the magnificent dreamt up space and no darkness dared to taint it. There weren’t even shadows bouncing off of the two entities that sat in the midst of the parade of white color. Or bouncing off the chairs they sat in. The chairs were separated by only about 5 feet, still the two stared at one another from the short distance they were apart. Greg was the first to speak.
“What is this place… why am I here again?”
“This is your dream space… where you run to escape the madness of your world.” Camden answered.
Greg pondered around Camden’s word for a second and responded with “Am I dead?”
“No…” Camden answered with virtually no emotion in his response. Suddenly, the white began to be tainted again, like last time. The floor began to fade into a darkish brown color and a bell began to ring in the background. The sky turned red and the ringing bell became loud and almost unbearable. Nonetheless, Greg now stood before a now standing Camden.
“Rapture is coming…” He said.
“Why’d you do it?” Greg said and the bell immediately stopped and the room became another room. One easily familiar to Greg. Cassandra’s magic shop…
Suddenly, Camden had a lit match in his hand. “I’m sorry.” He said and dropped it. Flames began to surround Greg and a spiral that began to close in on him. Greg looked up at Camden, with the fire reflecting off his eyes, in terror. Camden was now holding Misty in his arms. She reached up to kiss him on the cheek as they stared at Greg in sorrow. The fire began to wrap around Greg’s legs like a snake coiling around its prey. Greg screamed in pain of the burns circulating all around his body right before waking up from his nightmarish dream with the same burning sensation scorching inside of him. His body levitated out of the hospital bed against his will. His body, fighting and twisting in an almost inhumane manner, levitated to the ceiling and he took one last breath with fear that it may be his last.
6 hours earlier…
Dawn sat in the chair across from Greg’s hospital bed. A doctor came in and with a clipboard and stood on the opposite side of Greg.
“Do you know why he would resort to something as serious as suicide ma’am.” The doctor asked.
“No… no clue. He was happy as far as I knew.” Dawn lied.
“Okay… Well I’m gonna keep it straight with you. His condition IS critical. He cut one of his body’s main veins and if someone hadn’t made to that alley when they did we wouldn’t have been able to get him back. His body just needs some time to heal and reconstruct itself. By tomorrow he’ll be off standby and out of critical condition. In a couple of days he’ll be able to go home.
“Good.” Dawn said.
“Well I’ll leave you two alone.”
“Okay. Thank you so much.” Dawn said and smiled. The doctor smiled back and made his way out of the room. Dawn wiped off her false smile and pulled her hair out of her face. She exhaled and closed her eyes. The light flickered a bit and she looked up.
“He’s been like this for at least 24 hours y’know?” Trish said, now sitting next Dawn.
“Yeah…” Dawn said, responding but almost ignoring her presence. Trish stood up and knelt down in front of Dawn to her eyes closer.
“Awh. Your in love…” Trish said with a loose smile on her face. The smile was so loose it fell off less than a second after she said it.
“Who’re you fooling. Me and you both know the only reason your even here right now is because you have no where else to go… The apartment burned down. You have no money.”
Dawn’s silence confirmed Trish’s accusations. Trish smiled before the door swung open and a doctor came walking through it. The lights flickered and Trish was gone.
“Hm? I’ll be sure to get that light bulb swopped for you ma’am.” The doctor said to the unresponsive Dawn. The doctor began checking the several medical machines surrounding Greg.
“His vitals are steady…”
“That’s good right?” Dawn asked.
“Yes. Your friend will be up on his feet in a couple of days.”
“Yeah that’s what the other doctor said… Can we, um, have some time alone? I mean, is that okay?”
“Sure, sure… I can’t see why not. Just press this button if anything happens.” She said pointing at a button near Greg’s bed.
“Okay thanks.” She said as the doctor walked out of the room. She stood up and hovered over Greg. She didn’t know what to feel. A part of her wanted to hate him for putting her in a situation like this, for making her have to use him to keep herself She placed her hand on his chest and her surroundings became warped. She began to be pulled uncontrollably into him. Although his body was incapacitated his powers were still very much alive and succeeded in absorbing her into his mind. By the time Dawn blinked she was in a magic shop. Dawn, feeling almost as if she was being taunted, stood in the center of the room and looked around until she saw a teenage Greg cowering in a corner. She walked slowly towards him and kneeled down to examine his condition.
“Greg…are you-” Dawn said and was cut off by an obviously distraught Greg saying, “Why’d he do it?”
“Why’d who do what?” Dawn asked him in confusion.
Suddenly the room changed again. It was the same room but in a much different scenario. Blue and red energy swirled all around the room in a maniacal frenzy. And in the center of the chaos was Camden, Misty, and Greg. Camden surrounded by a whirlwind of chaotic blue energy that seemed to be destroying the building. Greg, crawling on the floor, half his flesh disintegrated and a trail of blood following his every move. Misty, floating in the air and slowly descending into what looked like her body, next to Greg’s.
Dawn stood, bathed in her confusion and horrified by the imagery that was before her. She was so confused. It was obvious that Camden was dying by his body language and apparently Greg and Misty had both faced some other-worldly torture. Suddenly, Greg appeared next to Dawn in his adult body.
“What’s happening here?” She asked him.
“The moment that led me to where I am now...”
“What???”
“Keep watching.”
When she looked back up Camden was looking at Greg in his misery and agony. She saw him mouth “I’m sorry” before holding his hand toward Misty. The blue energy destroying the room then began to focus on Misty and turn red. It swirled around her descending soul and chained it to her lifeless body until they were reunited. Greg was then grabbed by countless mutilated hands and dragged back into the dark vortex that stood behind him all the while. Camden’s body then fell lifelessly unto the brown flooring. Not a full second later Dawn found herself back in the hospital room.
“So what’d ya see?” Trish said, sitting in one of the chairs with her legs crossed.
Dawn looked at her with an evil eye at first and then stepped back to sit in the chair behind.
“How much do you know about him?” Dawn asked.
“All their is to know...” Trish answered.
Dawn stopped and contemplated for a minute.
“There was a magic shop... I saw the 3 of them.”
“You mean...”
“Greg, Camden, and Misty... the whole posse.”
“I can already see where this is going...” Trish said with a slight smile.
“Camden was dying... Greg and Misty were already dead, i think.”
“Camden gave up his life to return one of them. His choice was the one he was in love with.”
“But I don’t understand... Misty’s dead. That’s why I’m here.”
“It gets more complicated hun.” Trish said and then stood up.
“Camden chose Misty... despite the fact that she was living in the other-worldly paradise known as Heaven. He turned his back on Greg, while he was suffering from the executioners in hell.”
“I don’t understand... why would he do that?”
“Because Misty asked him too... Heaven for Misty.... was hell if Camden wasn’t there.”
“The same was for Greg, only unfortunately for him, Cam didn’t roll that way.. ha!” Trish said jokingly. Seeing that the joke was completely lost to Dawn, Trish said “Okay let me start of over. Greg and Camden were best friends. Camden fell in love with you...well the other you... and when the time came he chose her over his best friend. And left his best friend to rot in a torture chamber deep, deep in hell.” Trish paused for a second and saw the look of disgust on Dawn’s face. “Don’t blame him... love corrupts them, humans i mean. If Greg weren’t a Seer, he probably would’ve done the same thing...” She said, looking down at Greg in his unconscious state.
“That still doesn’t explain why I’m here... and Misty’s not.”
“A demon posing as Lucifer known as Praestin brought him back. He brought him back part-demon. Praestin used this to his advantage and used Greg to wreak havoc on poor Misty’s life. You see, Praestin was a shape-shifter and he took the form of Camden... and Misty had to choose. To take the hand of the one who had been terrorizing her for the past 5 months, who ironically was himself again, or the one she’s longed to see since her return, who, even more ironically, wasn’t himself. Guess who she chose?”
“.....Camden.”
“Correct! There may be hope for you after all... and that decision led to the taking of her life... at the hands of Praestin. Throw 5 years onto that and here we are. Greg... betrayed by the two people most important to him. Both of his best friends. Its a wonder he didn’t off himself sooner... but there‘s no hope for him now.” Trish finished.
“What does that mean?”
“You think the demon community is gonna leave this opportunity to gut him like a fish while he’s incapacitated. No. He’ll be healed in a couple of days. But that’s way longer than it’ll take for at least one of them to come in here and eat his cute little face when we’re gone.”
“Why haven’t you tried to kill him?”
“It’s against my orders. Which is a shame... Greg needs immediate healing. The kind only an angel can give.”
“Then if he’s so important why don’t they just come down here and heal him.”
“You can only be healed by God if you believe in him. Greg’s given up all hope... He doesn’t know what to believe anymore...”
“Where do you come into this picture? You seem to know so much about him...” Dawn pointed out.
“It was my job.”
“Was?”
“My boss seems to think you’d be a much easier candidate to convert.” Trish said after kneeling down to just below Dawn’s face. Dawn looked at her blankly.
“Who’re you fooling? This isn’t you... None of this is. You just need someone to take care of you because your powerless right now... but we can get those powers back...” Trish’s startling words caught Dawn’s attention immediately.
“What?” Dawn responded.
Dawn clapped for joy when she saw this reaction. She then leaped up and said, “All you have to do is finish off the rest of that bitch that sleeping within you.”
“What bitch?” Dawn asked.
Trish stopped for a moment... “You mean you don’t know... You don’t feel it?” She asked her.
“No. Feel what?”
“She’s still in there... that’s the only thing that’s stopped you from slitting his throat today.”
“She? You mean Misty...”
“Yes!! Did she block your common sense to? You should know how this works better than I do? You die and you leave your magic with Misty... Misty dies and she leaves her humanity with you... That was the curse those damn monks put on you both.”
“Why didn’t this happen last time?”
“Because last time Misty wasn’t dead... Sean left out that little fun-fact. You were awoken prematurely that day. That was Praestin’s plan to wake you up prematurely that way he won’t have to deal with the curse.” Trish revealed to Dawn. Still, Dawn sat in the chair and thought things through. “Did you think this was you? You don’t need to be loved. You don’t need compassion. Fuck that, I’ve heard stories of a man you killed because he proposed to you... Your evil Dawn... as evil as they get.”
“How do I get rid of it?”
“It won’t be easy. But we start with him...” Trish said and revealed a dagger she had brought along.
Greg laid in the grass, of a park, with Misty. The sun shined magnificently on them both. It was warm and pleasant. Children were yelling and playing all around them. Misty and Greg laid in the midst of ladybugs that journeyed all around their colossal figures. Misty stared at Greg with joyful eyes. Greg stared at her with fearful ones.
“Why’d he do it?” He asked her.
“What do you mean?” Misty asked him.
“Camden. Why’d he turn his back on me... When i needed him most?”
“Because of me, silly. He loves me. That’ll never change. You knew that...”
Suddenly the children stopped screaming and Greg was the first to notice.
“What happened to the children?” He asked. Misty frowned and checked her watch.
“That time already???” She asked.
“What time?” Greg said. Suddenly Misty jumped on top of him with a knife suddenly in her hands.
“I’m sorry.” She said as her tears fell on his face and the sky turned red.
“Misty what’re you doing!?”
“I have too. For Camden...” She said and began to scream before plunging the knife down. Greg helplessly on the empty ground of a parking lot. Misty was no where to be found. He stood up and saw a single car in the parking lot. The sky was still red and he could still hear thundering all around him. He walked to the window of the car and looked inside. He saw himself sitting in the car, next to Praestin, in Camden’s form.
“No don’t do it! Don’t!” He yelled as he beat against the window of the car. He screamed in vain, however, next he saw himself agree to Praestin’s terms of becoming a full demon. Soon after his other self faded away and only Praestin was left in the car. Praestin looked up and laughed at Greg hysterically. The thunder got louder and it began to rain. He found himself in the forest where Greg and Dawn fought. He looked around and saw Trish standing under a tree, staring at the duel with someone standing beside her. Her ran over to the man and turned him around revealing it to be Caleb, smiling menacingly. Caleb laughed at Greg almost as hard as Praestin was and Greg found himself in a high school. The school looked unfamiliar. He didn’t remember any of the lockers that surrounded him from any point in his past. Suddenly, a girl came running down the hallway screaming for help. And behind her came an axe-wielding Caleb. The girl got to the entrance of the school and found herself trying frantically to open it but in vain. The doors were chained shut with a pad-lock. Caleb threw the axe and the girl ran down the basement stairs just barely in time to escape it. The axe pierced through the wall and Caleb completely ignored it as he followed his prey down the stairs. Greg looked around the school and saw “Rosenberg elementary” plastered on a homecoming banner. Soon after the room began to warp. He saw several moments from his past spinning all around him. He heard the constant voices of Camden and Misty echo in his head and he fell to his knees in agony. He grabbed his ears to shield them from the horrible pains until finally it all stopped. Everything stopped. He opened his eyes and saw nothing but a chair. On the other side of it sat Camden. He slowly made his way across the room and to the lonely chair that almost begged for him to accompany it.
“Just hold the knife over him. I’ll handle the bird.” Trish told Dawn who was holding the ceremonial knife, Trish gave her, just above Greg’s open mouth. Trish held a beautiful white bird in her hand that seemed to be comfortable and trusting in its holder. She held the beautiful bird just below the sharp ceremonial knife.
“Jab it.” Trish said.
“What?” Dawn argued.
“Jab it into the damn bird.” Trish argued back. Dawn closed her eyes and tried to jab the bird but when Trish realized she couldn’t she jerked the bird up and pierced into its back with the sharp knife, killing it instantly. Blood trickled from the bird and into Greg’s mouth. Trish threw the bird’s mutilated corpse in the trashcan and pulled a small journal out of her back pocket.
“Give me the knife.” Trish commanded. Dawn gave her the knife and Trish began chanting what she had written in the journal. The knife began to glow and Trish placed it on Greg’s chest.
“Showtime... Gimme your hand.” Trish called to Dawn. Dawn grabbed her hand and they both grabbed the dagger.
“Read this.” She commanded and they both began to chant what was written in the journal.
“What’s happening to him?” Dawn asked her.
“He’ll be fine.” Trish said. Greg continued to twirl painfully in his levitated state until finally he jerked painfully forward and his body glowed instantaneously blue before falling back on the bed, limply.
“..... is he dead?” Dawn asked.
“No...” Trish said. She then picked up the dagger and gave it to Dawn. “I brought a friend...” She continued as Caleb made his way into the room.
“Why’d you bring him?” Dawn asked.
“He’s gonna help us finish our next task.” Trish replied with a sly grin. Suddenly, the hospital door opened and the doctor entered.
“Sir you can’t be in here...” The doctor said before realizing how crowded the room had become.
Greg sat on his hands and knees breathed in all the oxygen he could. His pours were flooding with sweat and his hands were trembling.
“What the hell?” Greg said in between breaths. He noticed that his surroundings had changed again. This time the floor was glossy and clean. He could hear his voice still echoing down the hall. He looked up and saw Steven standing in the center of the museum where he had lost his life.
“Steven...” Greg said to the last person in his life he ever cared about.
“Hey, man.” Steven said as he walked up to Greg and helped him off the ground. At first, Greg jerked his hand away from him.
“Greg, I’m real. I’m not apart of your dream...” Steven revealed to Greg.
Greg stared, in disbelief, for a moment longer before throwing his arms around his lost friend. He couldn’t stop himself from crying. And Steven didn’t try to stop him. The two fell on the ground and cried for a little while longer before the surroundings shifted from the museum to the park, him and Misty were previously.
“How?” Greg asked as they stood up and began to walk around in the now bright, sunny atmosphere.
“The same way you sucked Dawn in. The same way you sucked us all into your mind 5 years ago.”
“Oh... I’m sorry.”
“No... I’m glad you did it. Gave me an excuse to leave. They didn’t want me to see you. They didn’t think you were ready. But I feel like if we’d done this sooner you wouldn’t have fallen as far as you did. Greg, your better than this. Your better than being in some coma because you attempted suicide. If you die this world is finished.”
“Oh... More food to put on my plate. Thank You.”
“Greg this isn’t a joke. This is real. Do you know how many people have died because you gave up?”
“Not many. I’m not the Chosen One, remember? That was you.”
“Greg, I would’ve been gone long before I did if it weren’t for you... If not by a demon by my own hand.”
“And what makes me so special that I can’t go out the same way.”
Steven smirked a little and made his way to a nearby bench that Greg followed him too.
“It was never about me, Greg. The moment Camden took himself outta the picture. The focus was on you... And I must say you’ve failed them again and again. With the becoming a demon and now this. You may as well be a demon again.”
“Thanks for the inspiration coach...” Greg said with his arms folded.
Steven put his hands on Greg’s shoulders and look him in the eyes.
“Greg, If not for the world do this for me... Man, I love you. I don’t wanna see you go out like this. You’ve been to hell you know what its like... Why would you wanna go back there.”
“Maybe because I know I don’t belong in heaven, Steven.” Greg said, his voice cracking and long awaited tears finally making their way down his face.
“Why wouldn’t you?”
“...Maybe an eternity in hell is better than an eternity with Misty and Camden. I can’t do it Steven... I can’t even look at them after what they did.”
“Greg, you can... Cuz if i can look at them be in love with each other for eternity...”
“Steven...” Greg said after Steven jogged his memory.
“Its fine... She didn’t love me. She loved him.” Steven said and paused for a moment.
Suddenly, the bell began to ring again and red ran through the sky. Thunder could then be heard loudly all around them. Greg stood up and asked Steven,
“Why does this keep happening? It happens in every dream...”
“It’s not apart of the dream. It’s a premonition.” Steven said. He then looked at Greg and continued with “Let me show you what your fighting for.”
The duo then began to walk through the remains of a destroyed city. They heard screams of men, women, children all around them. Greg looked to his right and saw people being chased down city streets by huge demons. He saw giant serpents devouring children. One woman was running from a monstrous bird that scooped her up and ate her, leaving no trace of her behind. Greg’s heart began to race uncontrollably. He looked to his left and saw a man holding his hand out, begging for help, from whatever dragged him into the darkness of a restaurant a second later. All that could be heard after that were his horrible screams that abruptly stopped after a few seconds.
“Steven where are we?” Greg asked him.
“Right now... New York City. The rest of the world isn’t any better.”
“Why? What is this?”
“This is what your fighting to stop Greg. Your the only one who can save her when the time comes.”
“Her? Who is her?”
“You’ve seen her... In your premonitions... She’s the world’s only hope... And your hers?”
“I’m confused. What is this? What is it we’re supposed to stop?”
“It’s Rapture...”
“What? Rapture? This is wrong. Its not supposed to happen like this.”
“It isn’t our Rapture... It’s his...” Steven said once he noticed a huge, seemingly humanoid figure making his way towards them.
“Greg... don’t look at him!!” Steven said and pulled Greg behind him. He held onto Greg’s wrist momentarily and allowed a white glow to travel from his hand and into Greg’s body.
“Your healed.” Steven said to Greg with a smile and then turned around to protect him. “Pull us out Greg, NOW!!!”
Greg tried his hardest to escape from this nightmare.
“Greg!!!” Steven yelled.
“I’m trying!!!” Greg yelled back. Greg could feel that the figure was standing just inches from them both before Steven’s huge white wings ejected and Greg pulled them both out of the nightmare barely a second later.
Greg awoke from the nightmare and into his hospital bed with IV cables hooked into his veins. His heart monitor had sky-rocketed. Shocked that a nurse hadn’t arrived to check on him, with such a sound beeping so loudly, Greg began to call for help unhooking himself.
“Nurse! Nurse!” He called out, completely oblivious to the lifeless bodies of both patients, nurses, and all other personnel that littered the hospital floor outside his room.
